I like the course, it's different from the usual smash fests.
I'll play anything they throw at me because I love the game, the site the competition and challenge.
That said, my exploratory 1'st serious play though didn't go so well. lol. I can not for the life of me dial out my slice today and it's hurting me on this course lol. So many times in the last hour I had to restart on the 1'st hole because of my banana slice putting me way off course. And thats with wind at my back lol.
Then I finally get things going a bit until I just had to rage quit on 12, wasn't doing too bad at -7, but enough of the heavy rough. Time for a do over lol
Having fun learning this course for sure. Just glad the tournament isn't for a week yet lol

Difference between this course and others we've played is, if you get off course off the tee and get into trouble...you can't scramble for par very well. Take the bogey..lick your wounds and move on. Just followed up my -10 on Thurs with a -8 on Friday with a couple of errant holes...could have easily been another 62. The 5's are easy birdie holes if played correctly(lay up and pitch)...I even eagled one on the Fri setup

Didn't say much in my initial post because I was on my way out the door to go to church. Yes, I go to church. LOL.
This is why I don't like the course.
1) I don't mind narrow fairways, but on these, you have a very small landing area, especially in high winds. I don't care how carefully you try to manage the course, in some situations there is almost no place to put the ball.
2) Some of the 2nd shots punish you if you play safely. For example, one hole, if you don't go for the far fairway, you're hitting your 2nd shot from behind this huge tree that you then have to shoot around, somehow. It's doable, but not easy. If you try to make your first shot over that tree, unless the wind is blowing out at some serious strength, you won't make it and you'll end up in the sand. Maybe that's still preferable over trying to hit around the big tree. Don't know.
3) Hole 8. Seriously? So you're pretty much forced to take a 132 yard first shot and a 180 yard 2nd shot unless you try a miraculous fade around the trees without being able to see at all where the ball is going to land.
4) And with all that, some of these greens are really tricky.
Let me put this in perspective. The other day I went through Q School to prove a point and shot 8 over in the 6 rounds, missing C Class by just 3 strokes. Today, on the Friday setup, I shot 6 over in the one round alone. This course is hands down, without any doubt whatsoever, harder than any course in Q School, at least for me. I've proven that much with my scores are Q School, none even close to being this bad. And in 15 to 20 mph winds, which is what I got hit with on Friday, this course is close to impossible.
So that's why I dislike it so much. E Class is going to have fits with this one. And worse than that, if I manage to earn my D card this week, I'll have to play this course in D Class. Or worse, if I get another exemption, in C Class. The prospect of that does not make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
And the worst part is that I honestly have no clue how to tackle this beast when the wind is blowing. I might as well be standing blindfolded in front of a dart board from 200 yards out and trying to hit the bulls eye.
Yes, I'm also a stubborn SOB and when something knocks me down, it pisses me off and makes me want to kick its ass even more, so most likely, in spite of my ranting and rage quitting, I'll actually be stupid enough to try to play this course, knowing my skill level isn't even close enough to be able to score well.
Jim, God bless you that you were able to shoot 10 and 8 under on this beast. You're a better man than me and why you'll be going to B Class in a week. But for us mere mortals, this beast is going to kick our ass all over the place.
It will not be fun.

Well, I finished my first 4 rounds and shot 15 over. I absolutely gave it my all and that's the best I can do. With luck, maybe by live tee time I might be able to shoot 10 over. All that's going to get me is a demotion strike unless the whole class takes the hit on this one. Not sure. It could just be me who can't handle this one. I'll wait to see a few scores posted before I decide whether or not to give this a shot.
As for additional reasons that I dislike this course, some of the pin positions are brutal. Bordering on sadistic. Oh, and for the record, I've played this guy's courses before while browsing through the database. I'll leave it at that.
I wish everybody luck in battling this one. There won't be any 40 under par scores in Class E that week.
I'll bet on it.

First try completed at -10. More practice is needed for sure.

Shot one more round on the Thursday setup. Shot 5 over. That's pretty much as good as it's gonna get for me on this course. I know what my weaknesses are and this course plays to them in spades. I have no chance to do well here. I can practice this course for 6 months and it won't get any better.
Three holes are impossible to come within reaching distance of the green if the winds are blowing in because using the longest clubs (driver, 3 wood) isn't an option because of the sand, rough, whatever, in the middle of the hole. This essentially says "best you can do here is par." And that's if your first shot is even fortunate enough to land on the very narrow fairway.
Another hole is a blind shot if you're going to have any chance of coming within reasonable distance of the pin on shot 2. This is hole 8.
In fact, what I should do is play through the course again and do an in depth critique of each hole (leaving opinions out and just stating the facts of the hole itself) so that you can see how difficult this course is under certain conditions.
I honestly have no clue how to play this course to even shoot par let alone be competitive.
And what gets me is John with his "this is one of the easier courses" on the one miracle round I had where I shot 1 under. I still don't know how I did it. It was my very first round. Since then, every round has been around 5 over.
If this course is easy, I need to quit this game.

Hey Wag, I can tell you how I play a couple of those "blocked" tees.
I think you're talking, amongst other, of the 5th. There is a good fairway to the left of the sand and the tree. Drive there ;-)
The 8th. 4 Iron, 3/4 faded, aiming at the first tree to the right (and from there, compensating for the wind)

Drive there ;-) The 8th. 4 Iron, 3/4 faded, aiming at the first tree to the right (and from there, compensating for the wind) The problem with the fairway to the left on 5 is that if the wind is blowing in, you can't reach it. So you have to go for the fairway on the right, leaving you with a miserable 2nd shot. There is no way around this with the wind blowing in. As for the 8th, yeah, figured that out but it's still a risky shot with the wind blowing and a lot of guesswork is involved. I played the Friday setup and shot par. But the winds were very low. Around 5 to 7 mph. Also, some of the fairways on the first shot are so narrow that there is no room for error. Again, with the winds blowing, this makes for an incredibly difficult shot. There is no question that of the 10 or 11 courses I've played on the tour so far, this is the hardest that I've run into.

Looking forward to playing this one. I like the change of pace between easy and challenging courses. Last week the gap between the A group and the D group was minimal. Sounds like we'll see those marked differences again.
