Pretty sure I'd have got there if I didn't have another slow backswing... Was P/F off the tee and S/F with my approach. Was only just short, but I do remember thinking "I wonder if many people can actually get up there in 2". I got a 4 on the hole and was pissed when I realized it was not a par 5 I just looked up the stat on TGCT home page for me on that hole, having been sure I had a GIR and birdie, but it doesn't say GIR...so maybe it just trickled off the green and I hole the putt from there? Maybe I chipped it in, I dk. I think I remember playing some kind of bubba-cut 2w against the wind (provided I'm thinking about the correct shot), landing/feeding the ball right into the little low spot in the ridge/tier 10ish yds short of the pin. It was absolutely a 1 in 1000 shot, but to be honest I didn't even think twice about it, not like it was some crazy unfair thing that we've not seen in the past season, let alone the past few weeks - seems those things have been the norm this season instead of having slightly more realistic shot distances, types, and greens/slopes around pins based on the shot in and hole layout/strategy (at least of late) so maybe I'm just immune to the ridiculousness by now...who knows...
Just one of those things, really. All volunteers around here, so we aren't owed anything, nor should we be, but would be cool to see an adjustment toward enjoyment at this top tour - not entirely, just like 5-10% - in the future, think it would make all of us have a bit more fun and could lighten the mood around here a bit. Think we've skewed towards this idea that we should be controlling scores/limiting scoring as close to IRL as possible since last year's WT phenomenon, and I'm not sure that's the best course of action, in my very humble opinion.

P.s. On the same "could you reach that par4 in 2" thing....that's a big no from me on 18 in round 2. Hit a perfect drive, even managed a p/f driver off the deck that went halfway where I aimed off the fw, but barely even made it to that front bunker. That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about, I guess. Make it hard, sure, we're on PGA, but I think we could make it a bit less manufactured difficulty for the sake of making things difficult. Just my 2 cents, think Dale has done a great job for us over the years, but would certainly advocate for moving away from this "let's limit scoring at all costs" (not literally all, you get what I mean) mentality.

Course was about as fun as having a vasectomy by a drunk chimpanzee with no anaesthetic. Then throw in the wind to boot, how to ruin a perfectly good Sunday. Usual suspects at the top, those lonely nights really pay off on courses like this 😂😂😂😂 To my knowledge, the course setup person for PGA isn’t even on the tour anymore. Wonder if it’s possible to get someone that sees it from our perspective? Any volunteers? It's not a requirement to have the scheduler play on the tour they schedule for. Dale's more than qualified to pick conditions for you guys.

It would be nice to know how the tour feels with some of the setups this year. Maybe some polling of the field? The wind direction for all four rounds made reaching 1 and 18 in two a chore. These are par4s. Just seems like making not-fun / overly difficult is permissible because we are all in the PGA. It would be nice to make this game fun again? The course as it is reminds me of the Korean DMZ. Very high cross winds just makes it a gamble whether you get the right hop or if you just are unlucky and end up in heavy rough just because. Just hoping we are still striving to improve at TGCT. Obviously HB isn’t but that doesn’t mean we can’t!

Here's a classic example of "going too far". I honestly don't know how you hit a better shot there. I "accidentally" got the fast which should've helped curve it more against the wind. Only to have it completely roll off and have a putt of 152 feet of pace? ?

Good post. But in weeks where the course isn’t so tricked up (unreachable GIR, pot bunkers everywhere, camel hump greens etc) then everyone (me included) complains that it’s too easy and that one or two pars ruin chances of winning, etc. I guess what I’m saying is exactly what kind of course is more fun for the elite PGA guy, the average PGA guy and the PGA struggling just to make a cut? Me, like you, believe that since everyone volunteers that nobody owes us anything. We owe them (rangers, developers, Tim and Doyley, etc). And I’m all for variety each week. I’ve enjoyed the major events that were not on official TGC courses (easy). The variety in difficulty and elements to you your game that score well on different courses theoretically would keep the same 3 folks from winning every week. Guess that’s not working out though. Just saying, what specifically is everyone looking for contrasted to what we have been seeing? And since I said that I will start. I love courses where you have to really think about approaches. And Usually going for the pin is the wrong choice. But yet the fairways are fairly thin but there’s a decent amount of light rough. Definitely no pot bunkers sprinkled all over the landing zones. But where you need to be on one side of the fairway, or break out the 2i or 3w to be able to see the green on approach or avoid the rough. I like fairly long courses with a few makable GUR holes if you have the nuts to go for it (good risk/reward). I also appreciate a course where we do not have to play in 20+ mph winds because the course can not defend itself otherwise. We’ve played a few courses like the above. Those are my favorites. But as much as I like then we still need variety. Remember when people used to design those courses where every hole was either up or down the side of a mountain? Major elevation changes galore. With skinny fairways and small greens...These were not my favorite at all! But even one of them once in a while would be ok.

Just saying, what specifically is everyone looking for contrasted to what we have been seeing? For me, like I said, it's nothing majorly different than what we usually get, only like a 5-10% adjustment towards "fun" and away from a concerted effort to control scoring. What that means for me isn't anything that would be deemed a significant change from what we've been doing, and yes, is certainly tainted by recency bias from a couple of the past several weeks.
At the most basic, I think it's fair to have rounds setup in a way which allows players to hit par4's in regulation, keeping in mind wind direction and speed on courses with long par4's to allow players to do so. I think that should be a fundamental, "required" element type of thing - it was for a long time here, and breaking that rule used to cause a huge uproar, but I'm not sure how much consideration there is for that now, or at least this week.
Going a step further, I believe it makes sense to pair up round-by-round setup to balance challenge and "fairness" - meaning, if very high winds which could require someone to hit a 2w into a par 4 with a tucked pin are chosen, then it might make sense to back green speeds down to "fast," and if that still seems too easy, then bump up firmness to "very firm." So we're still given an immense challenge from gale force winds, and shots taking huge bounces, but we won't have balls trickling 60+ft away from the pin on a shot that nearly stopped within 10-15ft of the pin, if that makes sense. That's the kind of balance I'm talking about.
I also would enjoy a slight shift to more realism in specific setups during weeks which make sense to do so, which obviously isn't anywhere close to every single week. The largest example of this was the Open setup, with 187 greens for 3 rounds, medium/medium firmness in another, and no rounds of very high winds. I honestly would have been perfectly fine with a round of very high winds, max firmness, and slow greens (or whatever the setting is that's one below 144). The greens at the irl event were rolling at a 10, while we played greens for 3 rounds at US Open speeds. I get why that was done, because "we" are trying to limit scoring, but IMO that's not a battle that's ever going to be won in an enjoyable way.
So, in sum, a more balanced approach to creating challenging setups, with a fundamental rule of having par4's reachable in 2, weighting "fun" over limiting scoring by an extra 5-10% (a small amount, I realize there's no % slider or something, you get what I mean), and utilizing more realistic setups in weeks when it makes sense to do so (unique style of course, setting, etc.). Again, Dale does a great job, I can't imagine having done this stuff for as long as he has, these are just my thoughts and opinions, for whatever they are worth. Cheers.
