Well..i just stopped a practice round at monongahela. Enough for me,today. I was playing not so bad, birdie at 1st,then a lot of par and the usual three putt bogey, but was confident to improve in the second nine my -2 in my first practice round.
Then,it happens to me one of these things that i hate. Really. Hole 9. Par 4. Wind 14/19 km/h straight against. Driver on the left/center of fairway..a pretty exact shot but in the rolling the ball ends his run just 5 inches in rough (cause here there's not first cut, choice that i personally dislike and can't ever understand, but it's a designer choice so ok).
5 inches. I swear. The space of a driver's head. No more.
So for the next shot i'm at 175 meters from the pin,but soon i discover that there's simply NO WAY to reach the green, cause i can hit every club between just 65% and 77% of power.
5 inches from the fairway.
At 175 meters from the pin.
Fine.
I use my 2 wood,i even find a beautiful fast backswing for some meter of bonus, but in the end i'm still 19 meters from the pin. (obviously the wind was still straight against, but even without wind i could never reach that pin. Never.)
Now my point is that is fine to (try to) design a course tougher for a major. It's fine to choice about don't use first cut. But what is the point to penalize a ball 5 inches out of fairway so much that became IMPOSSIBLE to reach the GIR?
Even without using a first cut,is about common sense that when you prepare the rough, when is 170/180 meters away from the pin,you HAVE to give at least the chance to reach, even only with a very very VERY good shot, the green.
This stuff to me is unfair exactly just like the idea to create a fairway 5-7 meters wide that decline roughly on some side. Or to made a par 4 550 meters long.
This is not about be tough,is just about bulls%@t,in my eyes. Maybe i can be wrong, but this is what i think.
(rant ended)

A word to the wise. Don't play your rounds when drunk. It doesn't work.

A word to the wise. Don't play your rounds when drunk. It doesn't work. Try to play a course named Crans Montana when you're drunk. You'll never drink and play golf again. (or maybe you'll never play golf,again..i don't know)

Anyway,i was checking the standings of this week's tournament and..sorry if i ask this, but you're really from zimbabwe? I ask this cause one of the reasons which i was absolutely happy when i discover this tour, was exactly the possibility to know and to compete with people from...anywhere!! I think is the best thing of this tour. I really love to see so much flags and to think there's something that connect us,even if we are possibly absolutely different for age, habits, tastes, ideas. I smile everytime i realize this thing.

Time for my second round. As i was feeling,my -8 is absolutely not enough. My idea is that if the conditions stays more or less like they are in the first two rounds, anything worst then a final -36/-40 will be no good enough to pretend some promotion mark. This means that i need at least a -10 in this round. It is possibile to do. But if i keep to putt as i'm putting, there's nothing to dreaming about. Good golf and good luck to everyone, guys!!

I liked the course selection this week, not too hard, but it was very demanding on my PC hardware. Lots of stutter so I had to tweak some settings down. I played OK overall but not great. My fault for not hitting the right tier on the greens. You would think I'd learn from one round to the next, but nope.

My pc has just a integrated vga,so i need to do this. I agree, the course is fine. Even playing with the back tee it should be not too demanding, playing with pro clubs. Probably if in 3rd and/or 4th round the wind blows stronger,it could be tougher, but as far as the first two rounds,is a quite easy one.

-10 in my second round. I have still stronger the feeling that i'm throwing away a great opportunity to reach another promotion mark. This one has been probably the best round i ever had in this tour, from tee to green. Almost every shot straight, almost every decision wise (or not too stupid,at least) and i have not checked but probably my proximity to the hole can be around 6-7 meters. But again 2-3 very easy putts for birdie unforgively missed by inches (i think i shoot again 25 putts,in the end). Looking at the standings, considering that i had 3 shots to recover..and that almost half of the field still has to tee off,i suspect i'm pretty far from the 10th position. The 3rd round seems again not too hard. I need to be more focused. I want that damned little green mark!

ezzinomilonga, I am going to disagree with you about the idea of not having any light rough. From a course design perspective, imagine a typical fairway with 2 yards of light rough around it. Then imagine that the greenskeeper mowed the light rough down to fairway height, making the fairway 4 yards wider. From a strategic standpoint, this design choice is meant to increase the risk of taking on the more difficult shots and to encourage safe plays to the center of the fairway. By the time you stepped to the 9th tee, you should have recognized that there was no light rough and taken that into account when deciding what type of shot to hit. That you rolled into the rough and could not reach the green is your fault; either you misjudged the shot, executed the shot poorly, or both. The course does not owe you a GIR if you miss the fairway. In fact, penalizing players in such a manner helps separate the good from the bad. Once you rolled into the fairway, the hole becomes about how to scramble for par. That's part of major golf.

Opened my maiden Trip-C event with back-to-back 64s. Only one bogey (overshot the green on 15 in the first round, NOT a good idea) but one iggle (12th in round 2). Best rounds I've had in a while!
Onward! (Seriously, only have a couple of days to get all rounds in before hols)
