Well, after the debacle of Monaco (I share your pain Tim) it was onto Canada. One of my favourite tracks in games gone by. I love the 180 degree hairpin and the chicane just before the start / finish when you are flat out and have to slam the anchors on.
Started qualifying off the pace as I was getting back into the track and remembering what speed I could take the corners and gradually got faster. Managed to pass the practice tests, including the tire test for the first ever time, although not played it much since its been patched. Having passed that, I saw that the tyre strategy is then tailored to your driving style which I though pretty neat. Driving Force India by the way.
Still off the pace a bit managed to get about 12th in qualifying and that's on hard, with traction control, auto gears and cornering guide. Yes, I know, but I am not very good!
Short qualifying and it's just starting to rain, so blasted one quick lap in before it chucked it down and managed to get sixth as the rain slowed everyone else down. Strange grid with the Mercs in about 10th. Anyway, off we go and safety car out after a pile up on the first corner. Managed to stay in the top 3 and then another smash brought the safety car out again with me leading by this point. All the field bunched up, my tires on 30% wear, and we set off racing again. Had to try and get a big enough gap to pit for the last time and came out 3rd. Then it's a dash for the line on fresh rubber and plenty of fuel, so could go rich for the rest of the race. I get in front, but then see both Mercs reeling me in. They were catching me every lap now, and was under real pressure. Managed to hold on for my first ever win by 1.055 seconds I think it was.
Fantastic racing and what a game! Just done a time trail at Baku and love that circuit. Never driven it before and a right mix of flat out speed, , and tight bends. Looking forward to that race later in the week.

Well that was unexpected. Game must have felt sorry for me after Spain and Monaco. I just qualified pole position in Canada. Great. 20 cars to smash into me on the 1'st corner. Awesome turnaround, Tim! Are you more familiar with Circuit Gilles Villeneuve than Monaco? I find that really knowing a circuit will shave a lot of seconds off a lap time. Just had my Monaco experience (Career Mode) today -- an unmitigated disaster! I qualified half decently (7th), but made multiple mistakes that saw me fall slowly down the field. Running 17th with about 10 laps to go, I decide to make a desperation move late, and make a third, and unscheduled stop to deal with a wing issue, and to throw US tires on after I'd shredded my SS tires. Well, I get the wing, but forgot to inform the pit crew I wanted US tires, and I get Softs from them! Long story short, I finish 19th of 20 remaining cars... :-( Monaco is a difficult challenge, but from what you described, I still wonder if you don't have TC set to full. There's no way the car should be "uncontrollable". That said, it's not like I'm George Costanza or anything!

There's no way the car should be "uncontrollable". That said, it's not like I'm George Costanza or anything! Never raced that track before, has never been in any of the games I've played in the past. Guess it's just more wide open for me, once you get the turns memorized it's pretty easy. Monaco, TC is full and think that may have been part of problem along with stiff springs. Example, the tunnel section, I come in and stay close to the left wall. Mid way through there is a bump/uneven area, my car gets kicked right into the wall on the right, can't fight it. I think when it hits that bump the car loses traction and TC kicks in and shoots me off towards the wall. If I had to race it over again I would reduce the TC and soften the springs and maybe open up the differential a bit. I think the car was too grippy, just seems like loosening the car up a bit would allow me to throw it around a little more. ------------------- So Canada i get pole position, start out great, still leading the pack after the 1'st few turns and no AI crashes me. Then the safety car comes out. About 3 laps of following that..so I get to keep my 1'st place. Race resumes, drop down to 7'th and battling Hamilton for several laps. Pit at the perfect time when everyone else seems to be in, so I don't lose much. Back out and battling Hamilton still. I get myself into 2'nd place, then down to 3'rd. Maintain it, but one of the chicanes I kept coming in too hot and wound up getting myself a corner cutting penalty of 3 seconds. Cost me two places, and finished 5'th. Still my best finish. Now I'm in Azerbaijan, just closed out so I can go look at the Steam Workshop for some tunes. Looks to be a tougher course so will need to have my car tuned to make up for my lack of skill.

Ok.... from what you described of the race experience in Monaco and then Canada, I'm pretty confident the issue was the setup you used in Monaco. Yeah, a twitchy car on a circuit barely wide enough for one-and-a-half cars is a recipe for meeting the guardrails for sure. In the tunnel, I find I need to let off the throttle just briefly about 2/3 of the way thru. It's probably the same spot where you get kicked to the right. The other tricky place for me in Monaco is the approach to the swimming pool complex (2nd turn after the chicane below the tunnel: Too fast, and you're slammed into the guardrail on the left, yet the AI just seems to blast thru there like there's no tomorrow. I lose at least .250 just in that little segment before the swimming pool chicane.
Take a tip from me (and Andre) - watch your fuel levels in Baku!

Buku, Baku, Fuku can kiss my ass. You know, the one you just handed me. On to Austria and the Red Bull. Qualify pole. Pissing down rain and my setup was awesome, I was way way ahead of everyone. 5 laps in the Safety Car (forever to be called the cheater car) comes out. I'm in 1'st so it's a lap till I get to it, it's just sitting there, so I slow right down or I'm going to blow past it. Well Hamilton and Vertstappen pass me. Wait? No over taking when the safety car is out right? If I would have done that I would get penalized right? (bear in mind I'm not a real life F1 fan and don't understand the rules so maybe I am missing something). Race starts, lose a couple more spots. But my car is way faster than those guys.Get my lead back. And glad to say I handed Hamiltons ass to him. And his little cheatin buddy.

So, I'm noticing a trend here. Moving on from the disaster in Monaco, the Renault team and I returned to my home soil for the Canadian GP in Montreal. Qualified on pole, some .702 ahead of Hamilton. Granted, it's a circuit I know ever nook and cranny of, but still was surprised how easy it appeared to qualify at. The weather report pre-race looked like light rain was in the offing about 10 laps into the 35-lap race. Started on slightly worn ultrasofts, which by my calculations would last until the first pit stop (for Inters) around lap 12. Well, after two laps the light rain begins - I hold out for as long as I can, fending off Hamilton, who's on supersofts, but after 8 laps I have to come in for inters -- along with all the top runners. By lap 18, light rain turns to monsoon, and still leading, I have to come in for full wets, again followed by 10 others. A couple full SC phases in the second half of the race kill whatever lead I happen to build on Hamilton and Rosberg, but at the same time the 3-4 laps of lower speed and the continued deluge helped greatly with tire management. Somewhere around lap 27 or so I screwed up my entry into turn 1, and Hamilton sneaks past. It takes the better part of the lap, but I finally get past him again at the hairpin when I dive down the inside and get on the brakes early to take the short route. Last I saw of Hamilton, and it was onward to a comfortable win. I'm starting to think that course familiarity is an even bigger factor than I first thought. Either that, or as Tim said, the game feels sorry for you! We'll see when I move on to Azerbaijan. Haven't run a lap there yet, so a lot of work waiting ahead.

That's a MAJOR glitch. There is NO passing during a SC phase - unless someone goes off circuit. You can stand on your brakes during SC if you want, and the guys behind you still can't pass. It's really annoying, and I'm hoping this gets patched soon.

On to Austria and the Red Bull. Pissing down rain... Nothing else than that to expect when you come to Austria! Well... maybe snow if it was Winter time!

I expect to have the first snow here in about 3-4 weeks. And yes, we do have rain quiet often. Especially at this time of the year. But now we're having a "Golden Autumn", which is nice, as I have plenty of nice days to play Golf.

And being from Canada I know a thing or two about snow. Two months from now it will be -20 and snowing. Tim is obviously from the prairies, or somewhere east of there, where it does, in fact, get cold as hell, and with tons of snow. However, whenever he finally gets fed up with it, he can always join Canuck and I on the west coast, where it might get down to -6 or -7 for a few days, but rarely with any snow that lasts more than 3 days. We've had lots of winters where there's not a flake of snow to be seen. Gloating now done, I do have to admit that winter is indeed a bit of a joke here in Vancouver. Three inches of snow is enough to shut down our (mostly) elevated transit system, and to bring traffic to a creep.

I was thinking of getting this for PS4 until I looked at the price - nearly £50. I might wait until it's around £35. These prices are a shock to the system coming from PC gaming back to consoles.
