Forget those overpaid Premier League 'stars' playing for our national side, REAL football is back this week! For one week only we can all bask in our usual preseason optimism, before a drab 1-0 opening day defeat brings us crashing back to reality. I'm interested to hear what teams are represented on this site, and share a bit of that optimism while it lasts! Premier League armchair fans need not apply, you've got another week before you can crack open your tinnies and switch on Sky Sports anyway Lifelong Bristol City fan here, many seasons of heartbreak and mediocrity under my belt with the odd bright spot in between. I think we've got a good young manager (stolen from Barnsley, sorry Chief) and the makings of a good side, but then I always think that! Look out for Lee Tomlin this season, that boy has magic his boots. The Championship is a tough division (first 3 home games are Wigan, Newcastle - dh-nufc is quaking in his boots - and Aston Villa!), I would be delighted to not be in another relegation battle and finish in the top half. Note: If you support the Gas, Swindle or Baaaadiff I'm not interested

Well I would reply with a more meaningful post but, seeing as I'm a Man Utd fan, I guess I'm not allowed too! There's a bit of a typo in your post by the way, the football that actually matters starts in 2 weeks time. Unless of course you're referring to Rooney's testimonial followed by the Community Shield?

Rooney's testimonial? About time they put him out in the fields with the other donkeys isn't it? Let me guess, you live in Enfield? Watching England always annoys me, glad to get back to the proper stuff.

Well Giraffe72 I appreciate you know my football loyalties, but thought I ought to formally respond. So, yes, I follow the mighty Tykes. Promoted to the Championship last season and trophy cabinet bulging with silverware since the midget left us. What a season we had. Honestly don't know what to think, but giddy all the same. My prediction for us is 18th, with Dirty Leeds, Rotherham (hope not, I like them) and Burton going down, Norwich and Newcastle will walk the league with our nearest and not so dearest Wednesday going up in the playoffs. Ipswich away first game, then Derby at home. Tough test, but will give us a good idea of our capabilities. Hoping Adam Hammill rips up this league, certainly got the ability to do so, and delighted he turned down a few other clubs including Bristol allegedly to sign up for 2 more years. Be interested to see who supports who on this forum though!

I'm sure Chief you'd acknowledge the field mouse played a big part in turning you around last season. Shame about Hammill though, he would have looked good in a nicer shade of red Great league, the Championship. First priority is just staying in it. But if all else fails at least we can have a good laugh at Sheffield United

The last time we got relegated nobody had any confidence that we would get back up. It was our first relegation for almost 20 years. We were rock bottom, we didn't even have a manager. After a good start though, confidence was high. Some of our players developed so much that year and it was probably my favourite season in the last 10 years or more. This year, even though we were relegated in similar circumstances, the decision for Benitez to stay means that the club is buzzing. We should walk it BUT the championship is not an easy league to predict and quite often favourites don't do well. I remember Boro got relegated when we did but they failed to get promoted the year after. It took them about 8 sessions to finally make it back. I don't think we have played Bristol city in the league since around 92. If I remember correctly we won 5-0 at St James but drew 0-0 at Ashton Gate. It's always great to get some away games in against some of the smaller clubs. Bristol is a bit far maybe! Barnsley is one of our regular away games. Always a good trip. Good luck to everyone in the Championship. Let's show the world that there's a whole lot more to English football than the premier league.

We've played you in the league a lot more recently than than dh-nufc, I remember a 2-2 draw at Ashton Gate not so long ago. I remember that 5-0 game though, I think that was just before you signed Andy Cole from us.

I assume this isn't American Football Oh, go Colts. Nope, this is proper football! Got another few weeks before the NFL gets going. Believe it or not I'll happily start a thread off about that too as it's another one of my favourite sports (football, nfl, cricket and golf). Go Dolphins, but that's for another thread.

Watching England always annoys me, glad to get back to the proper stuff. I'm from a small town just north of Newcastle actually so yeah, a local-ish. I never care half as much when watching England when I do watching club football, I guess you get used to failure and are just waiting to be let down.

Same for me garyg, very little interest in international football. I hardly watched a game in the Euros this year. To be honest that comes from the premier league though, I hate it with a passion and the money that's wasted away on average players and agents. It's just foreign owners playing championship manger for real. My team might be small, we might go down, but much rather support them and live or die on our own terms than have some foreign no mark come in and chuck money around. I loved it in league 1. Proper football. At great little grounds with proper fans who support their team week in week out. The champ is a very different league now to when we were last there. Full of big city clubs with either foreign owners or very rich fans running them. I fear for us, Rotherham and Burton but hope we can slap a few of the bigger clubs along the way! I hate parachute money too. It's knackered the championship now with clubs who come down being rewarded for failure and everyone else struggling to compete. What makes me laugh are some Man Ciry fans I know who say they preferred it when they were crap. Now they just expect to roll over most teams and that would bore me to death. Takes all sorts though and just hope that the powers that be don't mess the system up so smaller clubs can't dream of getting into the Prem and it all gets fenced off for the bigger clubs.

I actually love watching the World Cup and the Euro's, I watched every possible match I could at the Euros. I'm just not that bothered specifically about England failing at major tournaments as it's expected. I was laughing in disbelief when we lost to Iceland. If that was Man Utd losing a similarly important match I would be gutted!

Can't wait to see Ibrahimovic, Mkhitaryan and Pogba lining up for us in the first game of the season, and interested to see Bailly as well of course! I can see this season being one of the closest and most unpredictable in years, can't wait.
