Welcome to Steamshovel Golf Club. Named after Charles "Steam Shovel" Banks, this design takes cues from some of his unique work. Banks was an understudy to both C.B. MacDonald and Seth Raynor, and was known for his use of a steamshovel to create extremely steep banks and slopes. Upon Raynor's death in 1926, Banks was dealt the task of completing over 10 of his works in progress, including Fox Chapel Golf Club (an RCR which I completed last month). The course focuses on classic ideals of design including a Cape, Redan, Biarritz, and Short, among others. This relatively flat layout is set at "medium-firm" firmness and "medium-fast" green speed. I wanted to create the feel of an old, prestigious club, where golf carts and their paths are non existent. The course requires thought over power. Each hole needs a plan to score well. It might take a couple rounds to appreciate the beauty of these timeless design concepts. I look forward to your feedback. Enjoy! This was a fantastic track, perfectly did what you were looking for with the architectchure concepts. I almost wish it was a bit longer with a little more break in the greens so I could pick it for a PGA event, but it's a bit too easy. With that being said, this needs to be selected for a premiere event on the challenge circuit in my opinion. Great job.

There's room for some expansion and some interesting pins to be placed. Maybe I'll put out a Championship version.

Hey Pitt...Played this a couple days ago and loved it. Very clean course. Felt like I was out on a real course. Great work with the brick wall. The planting was just minimal and perfect for what you did here. I enjoy many variety of courses, but there's something nice about playing a course that is just a golf course. i like the flash and eye candy, but when I play a course like this I feel like I'm really out there playing. I agree with Duke, it's on the easy side for the PGA guys, but still so enjoyable. This should be on a lower tour stop in my opinion. Super job! Thank you for this great course.

This course has now been ported over to TGC2. Took a while as planting limits and a lot of bunker modifications were made. It plays just the same as the original. Should be a pleasant round, nothing too difficult or long. Charles Banks GC was designed with this as the basis, and provides a more difficult test. Hope you all enjoy.

In my all time top ten courses for TGC. A well thought out course that doesn't try to present itself as something it isn't, very straightforward no thrills golf in it's purest form.

How are you able to achieve the look of the bunkers? Particularly the ones with the high grass walls like the Alps bunker and the Eden bunkers? I'm a huge Banks/Macdonald/Raynor fan and I think your courses are absolutely fantastic. Looking for some guidance on making my own template course.

To be quite honest, it's the most difficult part of the designer. A little easier on your own creation vs. an RCR like Fox Chapel. Real slopes at Fox Chapel (6 and 8 green) were almost impossible to create. On TGC2, it has been less challenging using splines, as the bunkers are not as concave. You can create a perfectly flat bunker using the spline and using the flatten tool. First I set the correct height of the middle of the green. Then using the raise tool, i lower the the middle of the bunker to the correct depth. I use the flatten tool in the shape of the circle or "(" and run it directly to the bunker edge, and use the same tool from the middle of the green, to the plateau edge of the bunker wall. The thinner border on the tool set, the steeper the hill will become. I use the circle blur tool to smooth out the necessary portions afterward. You would almost have to see it live, but I'm not a youtube or twitch person. I hope that helps

Thanks alot. That helps immensely seeing as how I never would have guessed that's how you did it lol. At least I am pointed in the right direction now. Have you ever thought of tackling Fisher's Island or NGLA? Great courses that I'm sure you could do justice to. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to play your next creation and hopefully soon I'll have my own to post. Thanks again!!

After playing the Charles Banks course and seeing others say that Steamshovel was even better, I got a chance to play this one last night. I am in total agreement. This course is incredible, and by far the best template design I have played so far. The uniqueness of the Corner hole, followed by a perfect rendition of the Short hole really sets the expectations for the round, and every hole is a delight to play. I really struggled early, but got it together on what felt like an easier back 9 to finish -3. The Home hole at the end has a bit of a Merion feel to me (minus the water) and was a perfect closer. Will definitely look back on this one as an inspiration for my future Raynor designs, especially for the bunker work.

Just letting everyone know that it's on the way to TGC2019. Giving it a tasteful renovation. Fixing planting, making a couple holes fit the template model better, but the feel of the original will be there. Visually you'll see more in terms of "golden age of architecture" features. #4 (road), #11 (cape), #13 (punchbowl) will see the most drastic changes. More straightline fairways, hard edge contouring, simplified bunker shapes are where you'll see the most difference. Also... I'm adding a little more length to the championship tee. Greens remain largely the same.
Hoping to have it done by the middle of September.
