Michael Karo, CC-B, -14
Was expecting more variation in green speeds. They were all pretty fast.

OK, don't laugh.... And I have to hide to show my total score: +44 ...yes that's a "plus" not a minus. I have a good excuse. I just bought TGC a few days ago, and started to fiddle with it. I love that kind of game, but geez the putting is killing me! What's the trick to put?! I've yet to find a good tutorial on putting and on how to use the yellow marker (don't have a clue what's it used for). If I had managed to get 2 puts per hole, and 3 once in awhile, my score would probably be 30 below the +44 I got. Anyway, that will not deter me from playing TGC.... I simply love the challenges!

If I had managed to get 2 puts per hole, and 3 once in awhile, my score would probably be 30 below the +44 I got. Anyway, that will not deter me from playing TGC.... I simply love the challenges! Putting was a b%& for me when I first started too. I was shooting 90s and 100s. The key is a lot of practice. As for the marker, on uphill putts, the software will move it for you. This is to keep your putts within a relative distance if you overhit. For downhill putts (the real hard ones, IMO) you'll have to move it yourself. I keep it simple and it seems to work. For every inch downhill, I move it one inch closer to me. So for a 15 ft putt that's 7 inches downhill, I move the marker to 8 inches away (15 -7) So even when I miss, as long as my feel is close to correct depending on green speed, I won't be anymore than 3 ft away if I miss. Then there is the break, from left to right or right to left. This is where the green grids and lots of practice comes in. If a right to left break, aim right of hole. The larger the break (you can tell by the speed of those little lines going across) the more right you need to aim. Putting is the hardest part of this game. I've gotten better at it but I am by no means an expert. However, I started out with a handicap of something like -30 and now I am at about a +5. It's taken me months to get here but with lots of practice, you WILL get better at this game and probably a lot better than I've gotten. I seem to be a slow learner. Ask questions and keep practicing. Good luck.

Thanks wagtunes for your good tips. My problem rely more on the strength I have to use in my puts. Shorter puts, within 3-4 feet, is not that bad, but beyond that I never know how hard I have to put. I tried to use the marker in practice, and didn't find it was doing anything. For me, it seems to be about the weight I put in the put. Also, I have to decipher the green speed which changes sometimes to 187 feet, to 125 feet, etc. I figured out it was the speed of the green, but don't have a clue on how to use it properly. I know that when I put on a 187 speed green, it's like I'm putting on ice! The ball keeps on rolling forever! Maybe the marker will help. I'll try it upon your suggestion.
Happy New Golf Year!
