My favourite is Surfer Rosa, but the best introduction to them is probably Doolittle. You can't go wrong, everything they did was genius And for a bunch of aging indie-rockers this new single is brilliant! Can't wait for the album.

Thanks dh-nufc for putting this together. Totally agree on The Pixies in general and Surfer Rosa in particular. Great album by a legendary band. Here are a few bands I love, keep in mind that I trend toward acoustic in my old age: Iron and Wine - this is essentially Sam Beam's project and I've gotten to see him twice here in Pittsburgh. It's mostly acoustic and soft, especially the older stuff. This is my favorite active band. Band of Horses - The Funeral is one of my favorite songs...ever. This band leans more toward rock but recently issued a live acoustic album that I really like a lot. The Avett Brothers - Some of their music is right on the borderline of country, which I generally loathe. A little mixed here, but songs like If It's the Beaches, The Ballad of Love and Hate and I And Love And You are favorites of mine. Some of the better known stuff: The White Stripes (they are my favorite band in the last 25 years) Muse (Knights of Cydonia...amazing) I also recently heard a song that I love by Dan Deacon. It's called When I Was Done Dying. It's basically an acid trip in musical form. I haven't listened to anything else, but this song is inventive and crazy and I really like it.

It's only taken 9 months for you to find it Jared! I originally had the idea of posting every week but there wasn't really enough interest. I just post from time to time now. I've not tried the Pixie's but I will soon. It's on my list. I'll give the others you mention a try too.
I'm off to see Catfish and the bottlemen Saturday in Newcastle, can't wait. They are supported by local band. Little Comets who are also excellent. You also need to checkout Tom Mouse Smith. He's playing too and he's great. Slightly younger than your normal artist. He's on Spotify but also here

OK, here's some shameless fatherhood stuff.
This is a local artist, like really local. As in my son, who lives in the same house as me.
He hasn't been doing it as often, but he used to play out from time to time to make some extra cash.
House of the Rising Sun

Great thread, some good selections to have a listen to when I get chance. I used to be a massive indie fan back in my younger days and used to go gigging regularly to see any old random band. I cant even remember most of them. Lol. I'll chuck a few names out of the stuff I used to listen too.
The Stone Roses (my all time fave) James Happy Mondays The Charlatans Inspiral Carpets Oasis Neds Atomic Dustbin

Maybe I should have added the Manic Street Preachers, Nirvana and Silverfish onto that list to even things out!

Great stuff here fellas. Tom Mouse killed it! Jared nailed Iron and Wine and also White Stripes. Jack White is pure genius. Check out their live renditions of Joleen (Dolly Parton original)...it's just fantastic. Here are a couple of my favs:
El Vy The National Bright Eyes
And for something a little more folk try Brown Bird.
