The fittings definitely help and they work different ways. The swing plane, timing and transition widen the forgiveness zone (width of white area on the meters). Power adds distance. Lie narrows the range of your lie - it does NOT improve your lie, but rather it narrows 60-70% to 64%-66% (made up example), so you can more accurately predict what will happen with your shot. Putt path makes the width of the "you made the putt" lane wider (more likely to make the putt) and the putt weight makes it more likely you will get the distance correct. Shaping increases how much shaping affects the ball (the higher the attribute, the more the ball will spin, loft or curve).
I recommend you play career mode with TGC settings (set the opponent strength to the weakest possible to maximize your credit grind) until you have enough credits to upgrade non-legend and then fit all legend fittings to your clubs. Anything before then is going to be tossed out later (so wasted credits?). You also won't really know what you need until you have played a number of rounds. If you can grind to Level 50 before you do fittings and skills (below), that is optimal but it is a long grind.
Last thing, look at your archetype. Most of us chose Rhythm as it improves timing and swing plane. But some folks found their swings were dialed in so they moved to other archetypes.
After a while, skills matter as well, but I would also wait until you hit level 50 until you apply your skills. Or you can apply them as you go and pay 500 credits at the end to reset them and get what you really need.
Good luck!
Thanks. So I started career mode wth Q-School. I shot 35 over, which is still better than my 41 over the first time I played this. So I'm improving at least a little. Question: I notice hitting the Y on the XBox 1 controller no longer shows me where my ball is going to land. I guess that's because of the settings we have to use. If so, how am I supposed to know where I am aiming? There is no way to see the fairway from the tee. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Make not of the first post about how to see the yardage. Then scroll down a bit to the first set of settings. The one below that is True Sim.
6 shots is a big improvement!

I just had my best round. 30 over par. I've improved 11 shots in just a few hours.

The Steam spring sale just started and the game was on sale for about 20 bucks. So I got it. This time I'm going to do this right. Before I even attempt Q-School, I'm going to play the game casually in order to get some kind of a handle on it. I will also make sure it is set up properly so I get a green grid and wind direction and speed. Then, when I think I'm ready, I will go to Q-School and will keep at it until I earn my card. However long it takes. I just have one question. How often is Q-School? Once a week? Once a month? Just so I have some idea how many shots I'll have at getting through it. Anyway, I'm not going to let this game beat me. I can be very stubborn when I want to be and sometimes that's not a bad thing. Thank you all for your patience. Wags is back. Let me know when you start Q-school and then I'll join in as well. You know a good way to get extra practice at the game? Becoming a rang.......wait. Forget I started to say that.

John, will probably be a while before I play TGC Q-School but I will be sticking with this. I'm determined to at least get my tour card.

waggyHow often is Q-School? Once a week? Once a month? Just so I have some idea how many shots I'll have at getting through it. Q-school is every week. You just play the same Challenge Circuit society 4 rounds as everyone else but there is a Qualifying pool / leaderboard. The top scorers on there fill empty spaces in the tour flights every week. So just play the 4 rounds every week. Good luck. Cheers.

I'm not understanding the points you get after you finish a round. I've received 8 so far and have spread them across driver, irons and putting but quite honestly, I'm not seeing any difference in my game. Are these "enhancements" so subtle that you really won't see a significant difference until you have a ton of them?
Also, when you buy a club, do you have to equip it right away? I'm asking because I just noticed the equip option (x on the controller) but didn't use it on the first few clubs I bought. Going back to those clubs, that option doesn't seem to exist anymore. If that's the case, how do you actually choose the club you want?
For example, I now have 2 drivers. I assume the one I bought is the better of the two. How do I use it? I didn't equip it right away.

If that's the case, how do you actually choose the club you want? For example, I now have 2 drivers. I assume the one I bought is the better of the two. How do I use it? I didn't equip it right away. So there are several aspects to improve your game via the "game".
First pick your archetype. For a beginner, I recommend Rhythm. It is the one that helps with swing path and timing the most (usually what people need the most help with, especially in the beginning).
Second you can apply Skill points. You can apply them as you go, but they only apply in certain situations and I don't they are helpful for a beginner, but if you really want to use them, look at your available choices and see what seems the most helpful. Likely it is anything to do with timing or swing path or putt path. I would not use power. In the end, you are almost surely going to reset all of your choices when you get to Level 50 (max Skill Points) and choose what you really need (because by the time you get to Level 50, you will understand your game deficiencies well). Skills can be problematic as they only apply some of the time (except last column of fittings, which you won't get until you approach Level 50). Again, IMO, leave these alone until you get to Level 50. The credits to reset are not that much, but they confuse your game while you are trying to learn.
Finally you have fittings. You will waste a LOT of credits you try to apply these as you go. Trust me, don't apply fittings until you have Legendary fittings to use. By the time you start getting those, you will have a better idea which ones will be most helpful. You can convert lower fittings into higher fittings (3 lower fittings will give you one next level fitting). That is what I would do and as you get the Legendary, if they help timing, swing plan, putt path or putt weight and those are areas you struggle, then it is probably worth applying those. If you are good at those things (rare for most people), then you can look at the other attributes.

Welcome to the forum. Where are you from Matty ?? I'll help you out... I'm from Australia Matty... not Austria. Are you competing in the CC design comp ?? If you are I will keep an eye out for your course. There's some great designers out there with some great courses. If you're new to the game make sure you play Yellowgrass Prairie and Hackamore Field Club. Brilliant designs... just brilliant !!

** Update **
Here's where I am and I do have a question.
I've been playing My Career Q-School and pretty much am now shooting consistently between 88 and 92. A lot better than my 41 over par that I started with.
My biggest problem is off the tee. Most times I'm too fast or too slow. This causes the ball to either hook left or fade right. Most times this lands me in the rough or the sand. So I pretty much lose a stroke just trying to scramble out.
What concerns me about this is that my timing is already at 93 with the two fittings I have for the grip and shaft. I don't see how reaching 100 is going to make that big a difference. Of course my power is only 59 which doesn't help. Even my perfect shots, which are few and far between, don't go very far. 275 max.
On the plus side, my short game has improved greatly, especially my chipping and putting. Even the commentators have remarked on my short game. If I could only hit the ball straight off the tee, I think I could actually shoot par.
Now, my question.
After working with the fittings quite a bit now, I assume that you can only have 1 fitting for each part of the club active at one time. So 1 fitting for the club head, 1 for the shaft and 1 for the grip. If this is the case, how do you ever build your numbers up to 100? Are there fittings that you get as you go up the levels (I'm now at about 20) that give massive boosts?
Is there anything else that actually improves your stats?
Right now, the way things are, I'm pretty much a 90 golfer. Unless something drastic happens (I doubt my actual technique will improve dramatically) I don't see myself improving much. Occasionally, I'll shoot 85 or even 84, but I don't see myself shooting in the 60s ever. And I honestly don't see myself getting out of Q-School.
Anyway, if you can clarify on the fittings that would help a lot.
Thanks.

Anyway, if you can clarify on the fittings that would help a lot. Thanks. As you continue to play, you will get more and more expensive but higher impact fittings. Legend fittings can add as much as 12 to an attribute. Put 3 timing fittings on, that could be +36 for timing. If you are using the Rhythm archetype, that is 122 for timing, which is a waste as 100 is the max, and over 90 starts to be diminishing returns.
The legend fittings are more expensive: 150 credits per fitting, 3 fittings per club, 14 clubs (including the two fitting putter) means it will cost you 6,150 credits to outfit all your clubs. If you use fittings as you go (and thus use up credits), you will have to grind as you will have fittings you can't apply (for lack of credits).
The driver and the irons have essentially the same swing plane and timing for normal shots, so if you are doing well with irons, the driver may be a yips thing (you screw up because you think about it too much). If you are saying you do really well with the pitch shot, that is a very different tempo, so then I would understand the struggle off the tee. I recommend you go to the driving range and hit the driver a bunch (don't actually hit the ball, swing practice shots). No pressure there and I found I hit my shots better on the range vs the course. I almost always hit fasts (if I swung badly), so I realized I was getting a bit more excited on the course, so now I concentrate on being relaxed.
As for qualifying for TGC - you don't need to be in the 60s to qualify. Last week +17 (for the four rounds) got a card. So work on getting to mid-70s as your goal, that will likely get you a card. Also, the more you swing, the more muscle memory you build, which should lead to more shots being where you want them (but still plenty of errant shots), leading to lower scores. This game takes a lot of practice (top tier players have thousands of hours).

Update:
Finaly made it out of MyCareer Q-School. Shot upper 70s for the first time.
Question: When do you start to see the Legendary fittings? I'm guessing not until you reach level 50 and then maybe once in a hundred rounds of golf?
Most of the fittings I've been getting since my early ones are crap and I've been deconstructing them as I'll never use them. Is that pretty much the way it is? Looks like this is going to be a long grind. Not sure when I'm going to do Q-School here at this rate.

They start coming before Level 50 as I recall. As for drops after Level 50, you do see them but they are definitely on the rare side, but not 1%.
Don't deconstruct, you put 3 of the same color to exchange it for one of the next color. That is how I got most of my Legend fittings. But it can be a grind.
If you want to play fast, put the players as absolute worst and put your play settings as easy as you want. If you put it on the easiest settings possible you can play a round very quickly, but it obviously does not help you get better at playing.
BTW, are you adjusting for all the variables? Wind (complicated - Gamer Ability has a good summary), elevation change (3 feet of drop or rise mean you shoot 1 yard less or more and the ball rolls less or more), lie angle (if you are higher than your ball, the ball will angle away from you when it is hit; opposite applies; if you are hitting up a slope it will go less far, down a slope the ball will go farther), and lie percentage (you need to hit the ball "longer" the lower the percentage - e.g. 75% lie means you need to hit the ball like the distance is 25% longer than it is showing). Hope that helps!

Hey guys, I decided that I'm going to do Q-School on Monday. I just want to make sure that all I have to do is go to the CC course being played that week and play it. I should already be registered, right?
