I asked this weeks designer InThisStyle what is his style, knowing this would help me with the setup of the course, to have the setup fit in the style that he considers a part of his personality and this was his reply.
In the shadows of my own existence, I am a raven perched on the gnarled branches of despair, its feathers drenched in the ink of solitude. My soul, a desolate landscape where wilted flowers of hope struggle to bloom amidst the barren soil of forgotten dreams. I am a brooding protagonist, playing out the scenes of my life with a script written in the ink of sorrow. I am the alchemist of adversity, transmuting the ordinary into the extraordinary by infusing it with the essence of complication. The tools I wield are not of convenience but of deliberate convolution, forging a crucible where resilience is tempered, and innovation is born in the crucible of adversity.
OK, well isn’t this fun, so I asked him, when it comes to his courses, what are his goals, his dreams for the people playing, does he like to bring a challenge to his courses or does he focus more on the fun element. As for his answer, yea I think you know where this is going.
As a course designer, I eschew the path of simplicity, opting instead to weave a tapestry of complexity that demands skill, strategy, and unwavering determination. The landscapes I create are not idyllic meadows of easy victories; they are rugged terrains, fraught with peril. I sculpt a landscape that mirrors the complexities of the human psyche, where the fairways become winding corridors through the depths of introspection, and the greens are haunted by the ghosts of missed opportunities. Each hole is a metaphorical journey, a descent into the abyss where the pursuit of par is fraught with the lurking specters of challenge. The greens, rather than serene putting surfaces, are desolate landscapes marked by the scars of previous battles. Slopes and breaks are the echoes of past struggles, and each putt is a negotiation with the ghosts of missed chances.
So, I said, you like to make courses difficult, would you like me to set up the conditions to reflect this?
The wind, instead of a mere meteorological phenomenon, becomes a wailing tempest, whispering the unsettling truths of existence. It howls through the twisted branches of metaphorical trees, carrying the echoes of forgotten dreams and lost opportunities, a haunting symphony that accompanies golfers on their solitary journey.
I got it, you want it windy. So basically, you want a difficult course made even harder with the setting and conditions?
The difficulty of the course is not just a test of golfing skill but a reflection of life's inherent challenges. Each hole is a riddle, each fairway a metaphor, and each putt a confrontation with the inevitability of fate. In this shadowy golfing arena, victory is not just a number on the scorecard; it is a metaphorical triumph over the darkness that envelops the course, a fleeting moment of clarity in the midst of existential ambiguity.
You know, people will complain about the difficulty?
In the shadows of challenge, one finds the true essence of mastery, The difficulty, is an invitation to dance with the shadows, to confront the echoes of one's limitations in the embrace of challenge. The people that complain need to learn how to navigate these shadows is to find a deeper connection with the course and with themselves, so the complaints are not about the course, not about the conditions but complaints are about their own inabilities and insecurities, their fear of the journey of self-discovery, where they confront their fears, limitations.
So there you have it, this weeks course is designed by Batman from the Lego Movie. It is by far the hardest course we have played on this kinetic this season, and may come as a shock to some of you guys that have recently been promoted. For everyone else, well, you know I like to up the difficulty from time to time and with the season well underway, it's about time that a challenging week was brought to the kinetic, so embrace your dark side, have fun and good luck out there.
