Hey,
I use the thumb on the right stick and have recently overhauled my swing technique (check out my post).
I would say the question is based on your goals. Now that I have a comfortable calibrated swing Par on Master is my standard. However, yes it is golf and you will have a “game breaking” shot more than a “game making” shot.
Besides drilling consistency on the range (you have to have a playable swing, doesn’t have to be perfects but must be playable) before you take it to the course. Things like layups and planning for more comfortable shots, identifying holes that are likely bogies and just playing for par rather than pin hunting are all plausible reasons and could actually be contributing more than your personal shot shape.

I honestly have no idea how anyone not using a modified controller uses one thumb. It's just not a natural up and down motion to me, and only having one point of contact on the stick leaves you open to slips like you said. I also can't feel any difference in my line with one thumb so when I do get a straight line (which is almost never) it feels no different than when I shank it.
I personally use the "pinch" method with my index finger on top and thumb on the bottom of the stick. This gives me the easiest straight line and I never slip off the grip. I've tried the two thumb method like some top players use, but I can't get that right. Aside from being awkward to reach across the controller with both thumbs, my left thumb just doesn't operate at the same speed as my right so I could never even get close to any usable swing.

Maybe try putting your thumb on the top of the stick rather than at the back of it, might help prevent the slippage. This is the way I've always played it, and while I do get the occasional slip, it doesn't happen very often.

A thumb for swingning and a thumb for your swingpath

I use one thumb. Practice looking at your thumb. They way you hold the controller can affect how straight your thumb will move. Play around tilting the controller and how it affects the thumb movement. You’ll figure it out.

Also called the 'chess piece' hold.. I do the same.. just the way I've always done swing stick style golf games over the years..

I'm still new to the game and refining things. I'm on PS5 and I've settled on left stick with 2 thumbs grip that Kawkster showed in one of his videos. It's awkward at first but it feels second nature now. If I'm not sitting just right or get lazy with my posture in my chair it affects my tempo.
It's a lot of experimentation to find what works for you. I'm stuck in that even par range and haven't been able to get over the hump on Master so I've still got lots to improve but that's been the most consistent method I've come across.

Same for me. New to the game and the two thumbs method is what's working better and a bit more consistent.
I'm still terrible at it but slowly improving. Got -2 on R1 and R2 of the qualifying so far for a -4, which is bit of an improvement from double digits over par in week one and three +2s and a +4 last week.

I swing with the left stick, thumb on the back of the stick. Sometimes I hit it pretty close to perfect, fast or slow nobody knows, other times my thumb slips and I end up with edge of the TV screen slows. I swing it straight, but the flaws in my technique mean I can't compete in this game. I can be at the top of a leaderboard one round and shoot a cricket score the next depending on whether my thumb doesn't slip and re-grip on the downswing. Sometimes I feel my thumb slipping off the knurling of the stick and I smash a fast 40y left of the green trying to hit it quick before I hit a slow into the neighbour's garden. Not just the issue of losing grip and hitting wide balls but I recalibrated my swing and now my character's neck is broken. On the rare occasion I actually hit a perfect tempo he throws his arms up in disgust. Are any of the top players using 1 thumb swinging method? What are the alternative techniques? I use the same swing, even though I'm right handed. Always have. No intentions of changing it but I am having to use more practice swings before each shot. Sometimes I forget to practice swing and that becomes a crap shoot.

Index finger and ring finger either side of the stick and push/pull with my middle finger.

Too many cooks spoil the broth. I'm right handed. I use 1 thumb. Right stick, right thumb. Same as when I played Pong in the 70's. When I hitchhike I use my right thumb. When I give the Fonzie "Ayyy" I use my right thumb. There was a girl who once had me down, pushed me around. Well, now she's under MY thumb and you guessed it..The right thumb.

I use left thumb only with a contact point on the lower half of the stick, not had any issues swinging reasonably straight. Done this since the TW games in 05 onwards so maybe just 15+ years of practice helps?!

Started off in 2K21 with one thumb but found the swing path unreliable. Went through a spell of using my forefinger and sliding my whole hand up and down, but the tempo was never good enough for Master, so switched to using two thumbs. I tend to push most shots slightly but this is mostly countered by most swings being slightly fast. Still not entirely happy with it, but every time I calibrate or change anything it only seem to get worse
