Extension, or no extension, I will be publishing on time (aka probably Friday) Yea, if it was extended that would give me more time to maybe re think a few holes and plant some more but 1. I am just burnt out at this point and ready to get this thing out the door. 2. I'd like to meet the publish deadline we were originally given. With the amount of time we were given to complete, I think this deadline was more than fair. At the same time I wont be upset if people get more time.

Honestly I'm all for pushing the deadline back a bit. To me, if you've published by this point you probably weren't under a huge time crunch. Plus I'd rather see the last few publishes be as finished as they can be! That being said I don't really mind either way

Plus I'd rather see the last few publishes be as finished as they can be! That being said I don't really mind either way While I do understand this, I guess to me it makes very little sense as to why there's a deadline for contest courses at all if this is the thought. Just let everyone finish when they feel ready and let judging begin at that point... The reason I personally wasn't under a time crunch and published when I did was because I managed my time. I knew when I'd be busy during the publish window, worked around my schedule, and made sure I could get the course completed. And during the time I worked on the course, I worked my day job, took a couple trips out of town, had multiple family obligations, etc. Had I known that we'd get an extra week, I may have held off publishing until later, since I'd be able to start back up in the designer a bit more frequently as we got closer to July. The reality of it is that we all had a quarter of a year to build a course for this - a massive amount of time in my eyes. And adding an extension one week before the deadline seems like a decision that would be made way too late in the scheme of things.

Baxter State Park (Maine) is published.
Re Deadline: I'm not a fan of moving the deadline goalposts either. I'm sure it impacts timing for judges and other contests as an unintended consequence.

You sign up to a contest… you’re signing up to the criteria that are set, in my book…. This has zero to do with the time available - and everything to do with how you respect a deadline… if the deadline had been end of May we wouldn’t have had fewer courses , if it had been the end of July there’d still be people asking for an extension…
If like people say… it actually doesn’t matter… then don’t set one - set a vague end date and say we’ll review on that day and set a real deadline then …
It makes no sense to have this discussion every time …

In terms of courses I know, Alaska, Utah, Oregon, New York, Rhode Island, Montana, North Carolina, Mississippi, Hawaii, Ohio, Texas are all being worked on and looks to be published (whetehr 100% done or 90%) from either my personal comments or teaser photos I've seen. There's other names on the list I assume are going to make the deadlines and guys I hope will (Heisenberg please!)
Basically just saying yeah it's not the full 50 field but looks like we will easily get up to a normal competition amount of published.
I'm fine with pushing to the 4th as a mini compremise giving 4 more days but also understand people's desire not to have an extension at all. Persoanlly, I want to drink beer and yell at stuff that's blowing up on my 4th like a true 'Merican!

Whoa. I only mentioned the extension because I saw Heisenberg mention it earlier in this thread. This is only my second comp, so I don't know what the norm is, I certainly didn't mean to stir up a bees nest. If I'd thought the reaction would be so vehement (no one said boo on the initial mention of the extension) I wouldn't have brought it up.

Ok, I’ll be honest, I don’t see why people care so much about moving the deadline. I can tell you, having been a judge, no one will care if the deadline is pushed back one singular week. If it’s announced now, no one will be foregoing planting or anything to publish. You all finished your course already with ample time to check it over, so it seems like the root of this is losing to late finishers, which seems needlessly petty for a virtual golf course design competition. It’s not like it’s a significant pain to anybody running the contest at the end of the day, especially considering the fact that CC isn’t even happening. I would highly encourage people to be more relaxed about this so we can get the best field that we can get and the best competition we can have.

If I'd thought the reaction would be so vehement (no one said boo on the initial mention of the extension) I wouldn't have brought it up. This is the second contest I am taking part in, and the first one (the "unofficial" Parkland Course Contest) didn't have any discussion of a deadline extension as far as I can recall. So I am not aware of how often extensions are discussed in other events. I think the idea as to why it might be eliciting a bit of a reaction is that we are so deep into the publish window, and people are getting courses out as we speak essentially. Add to that fact that people are getting burned out from the designer and this almost 2-year-old game, and it's a bit deflating to those who did publish already that an extension might be offered in what could be their last publish until 2K23 drops...at some point...hopefully. I don't think anything is personal, it's just a combination of factors.

Again, I think it comes back to the whole idea then of why is there even a deadline? I, too, have been a judge in a contest (last Rookie Contest), and yeah, the deadline probably doesn't affect anyone in that role, or at least not very much. To me, it's the other entrants who planned around the deadline to get their course done on time that are impacted. You publish within the window only to find out, one week before the end of it, that you could have had more time to tidy things up...and that extra time would include a long weekend for the U.S.-based designers. I am not going to win the contest, 100% guaranteed. So that's not even a consideration for me - the whole losing to late finishers thing. But playing by the rules, no matter if it's a "just for fun" contest or whatever, is still kind of important IMO. IDK...maybe this has been blown way out of proportion now. But a deadline is a deadline in my eyes, no matter if it's a project for work, a fun event, etc. And 3 months to work on the project is ample time.

Think it's probably worth mentioning that the deadlines for both DT and WC were extended by a couple to a few days due to people under time crunches. There's no reason worrying about this imo, as if we want a field with the best possible selection of courses then a deadline extension of a couple days to a week is probably a good solution. It doesn't matter that much, all we want is the best possible field of courses

I genuinely don't know, and was wondering if that compares to the 3-3.5 months we had for NT.

It doesn't matter that much, all we want is the best possible field of courses Just because it seems an extension always is granted should never ever be a reason to allow it for every contest. There are some good examples of why an extension has been granted in the past such as lost saved file on PC that was unrecoverable due to corrupt file. Think that happened to Leecey. If you can’t complete it from the time that was given when you signed up then maybe you should reconsider entering the contest. Maybe we should be able to start working on our next course contest before the window even opens up after all it’s just a silly video game.

There is a deadline so people know when they should finish by. If not enough people can finish, I don’t see the issue with extending. Why do schools have deadlines if teachers will give extensions? And, like Charlie said, an extension isn’t unprecedented by any means.

WC I think was 18th or 19th December to the 4th or 5th April This year's NT is close to how short the window was last year - 3 months 4 days (not counting any potential for extension this year)
