After running through a few plots I finally got a course I’m going to stick with.
Am I an idiot for trying a golden-age template design with flat bottom bunkers in a rookie design contest? Probably.
Either way, I find it more fun to try to pull of something technically difficult and deliver a solid course.
Currently I’ve got the course routed, and about 50% surfaced. 0% planted (just place holder trees to help me visualize holes) Still quite a bit of work to do but plan to put in quite a bit of time this week.
Below is the scorecard, I’m likely to mix up par 3 distances on 5, 12 & 14 but otherwise everything should be close to the same unless I reroute a few holes again.
Here is the general routing with a river that runs through the course and turns to a delta near the south side of the property. (May remove the delta but not sure yet). I’ve tried to route relatively tight to maximize views of other holes and minimize planting.
Quick preview a few hole designs below:
2 is a semi-drivable par 4 that works as somewhat of a twist off the Bottle Template. You should really never try to drive this green as you can easily run the ball through into the river behind the hole on a diagonal to the left so a fast will cost you a dropped shot. Laying up short center will leave you an awkward length pitch into a small green that slopes away towards the river. The play is to play out left as close to the river as possible to leave the best angle into the green with a full wedge, but will require a 4-5i off the tee to avoid running through.
3 is a 190y Eden hole with a river working as both the Hill and Eden bunkers. The green slopes back to front and towards right to left, except for a small false back where shots way long and left will be sent into the water.
6 barley visible apart from the green. Not a traditional template but plays very similar to Inverness 10th with a fairway split at the 200y mark, and a smaller tighter fairway blind & below the first from 220-255. This plays into a narrow and skinny green flanked by bunkers that and has a high middle tier with both back and front tiers lower. This green tests distance precision from wedges
9) plays as a reachable par 5 narrows template into a raised green complex with bunker short right and behind. (Ignore the bunker sculpting for now there my draw distances are awful on console and need to rework these anyway)
10 plays as a leven template that encourages you to play near the far left bunker to open up the green. Carrying the diagonal bunker is easy if you go right (250y or so) but leaves you a blind approach into a green that slopes away from you. Short left is also an easy drive but leaves you 190 in vs 130 or so for carrying the cross bunker.
lotta work left to do but I’ll try to post updates here this week as I continue.
open to any suggestions or feedback.
