Set in the low country just outside of Charleston, SC Steeplechase is a golden age inspired par 71 course and my entry into the Rookie Design competition. Steeplechase is inspired by the likes of Yeamans Hall, Country Club of Charleston, and Charleston Muni. Taking from its name from race, players will encounter water as the course is routed along a shallow river that will come back to throughout their round, and subtle elevation change (hurdles) the player will need to traverse. There are many interpretations of the classic template holes, some more of a twist than others. Below are generally the templates interpretations, but not all: 1, Par 5, Coore & Crenshaw/ very loose Road 2, Par 4 Bottle 3, Par 3, Eden 4, Par 4, Loose Valley/prize dogleg 5, Par 3, Redan 6, Par 4, inspired by Inverness 10th 7, Par 4, Prize Dogleg 8, Par 4, inspired by Pasatiempo 11th, loose valley hole 9, Par 5, narrows 10, Par 4, Leven 11, Par 5, Cape, Maiden/Birriatz 12, Par 3, Double Plateau 13, Par 4, Hogsback/Plateau 14, Par 3, Punchbowl 15, Par 5, Long 16, Par 3, Short 17, Par 4, Lionsmouth (loose rendition) 18, Switchback This is my second course I’ve fully published, with my first being Heartland Dunes Club. Any feedback is appreciated. Designed on PS5 Pics: Off Course, Yeamans Hall ode Hope you enjoy!

Really cool course, templates are really hard to pull off and I think you've done them really well here.
One thing that happened to me is I got a bit confused on the 8th tee on where the green was, I started moving my marker right to cut off the corner before realising the hole went over the water. Turns out my character was blocking the green and fairway across the water from the hitting position so I didn't see it at first. So I guess having the tee a bit more angled towards the green or moving the tee box closer to the river to get a better view of the green from the tee could help solve that a bit? I can see how there really isn't an easy way to fix that though with how you wanted the hole to play.
#6 and #2 were both really fun to play and I felt really good about hitting 3 iron + gap wedge pitch in to 6 to make birdie in to that tucked 1st pin, really cool hole there.
A bogey on 5 was deserved for me after hitting in to the right hand bunker, really punishing bunker that I enjoyed the challenge of getting out of.
I'm glad the green on 13 was pretty calm and not any hazards around it with distance being the main struggle on a long par 4 like that, I'm glad you held back and didn't make a miss too penal on that hole.
I loved the green on 16, that's a really fun challenge there to get the distance right (especially in to pin 1 where long is dead).
Overall, it challenged my game really well and made me hit good shots to make birdies which I really enjoyed. Ended up with a -13 on High Default winds on Pin 1, so I was still able to score by hitting the right shots which is always good. I'm sure there's a few other mean pin locations, I'll definitely have to give it another shot on a different pin/wind combo to see how it changes!
Good luck in the contest!

Thanks for the playthrough man, I tried to make it a moderate challenge and force a player to really think through the shots to score, which seems like you did very well. I never got anywhere close to -13 playtesting so you’re much a better player than I lol. Ya I see what you’re saying on 8, was tough bc the drive over the creek isn’t carryable but 50% or so of the time so left the waypoint in the short fairway. Probably could’ve angled the tee a little more or disjointed the fairway between 8 and 4 to show the green is to the left. I’m glad you enjoyed it. There definitely are tucked pins in every set and I made sure to mix them up to balance the rounds lol. Thanks again and good luck to you as well.

There is a lot of quirk here I appreciate and applaud you for taking on. From first hand experience going this route in a competition, this course may be a bit polarizing, but job well done with such a unique and creative course! I have a fascination with people taking on templates in unique ways and seeing their interpretation so this course was right up my ally. Good job!

Interesting take on the templates. Thought many of them worked well. Environment was good, course and greens played well. Very solid 2d publish. Good luck in the competition

I figured it would be a bit polarizing going in and ultimately decided if I’m going to put 100+ hours into designing a course I’ll build something I find interesting and strategic as opposed to catering to a crowd. I’ve played your course that’s similar style(forget the name) as well and enjoyed it! I’m jealous of how well you were at the bunkering because flat bottom bunkers are a total b****. I’m confident that will be a solid knock against me in the contest, but after redoing them all 4-5 times I eventually said there are a few bad ones that I I’ll live with and moved on. I’m glad you enjoyed, thanks for playing!

So, I guess it's the black tees then ;-) Really lovely setting with the planting and the lighting. I don't understand the template holes, but they look good! Good looking plot i.imgur.com/RvrE2zj.jpgNice clubhouse i.imgur.com/eUQdyYo.jpg with a great entertaining area. Interesting train i.imgur.com/Vwy8SSD.jpg but didn't see a lot of it during the round. I'm on the fence for double water. The trouble is it's too clear and the rocks look like they are a canyon rather than the bottom of the river. The 6th kept me thinking, but in the right wind you could go for it. I only just got to the fairway on 8. My eagle chip on 9 was unfairly dealt with. Difficult to get those crisp edges on the green leading into the fairway without the crinkle cuts. I got extremely lucky on 11 when my approach shot flirted with the water. I thought the slow hit would sink it for sure. Then made a ripper downhill putt. The 16th was cool. Smashed my first putt on the final hole and left myself an 18 footer for par. Lovely environment and 5 stars.

Good job, I personally don't like the geometric stuff, but this course was actually enjoyable, best of luck in the comp
