Hey all, curious to hear how more experienced designers get those super crisp and smooth fairways. I know the sharpen and smooth button, but I still see some kinks here and there that can’t be worked out.
Are there some tricks to use with the spline handles I don’t know of? I get spline points pretty well. I’m also wondering if there’s a sweet spot to how many splines to lay on fairways/greens. Seems like too many and it’ll be impossible to adjust without having sh%$ jutting out left and right. I might be rambling at this point, but if anyone has things that helped them I’m all ears!

I try to go every 5-10 yds or so. Try deleting 1 or 2 spline points, sometimes that helps get rid of the weird jagged bumps.

Rama---It's tedious, but you need to get low and go one by one and line them up if you want smooth and crisp. You might not need to adjust each one, but most. Line up a few, hit the smooth button, do a few more. Takes awhile, which is why you tend to see a lot of scraggly splining, especially w/no light rough. Like Scoot says, every 5 to 10 yds seems about right, but you have to play around and get a feel for it. Is this what you mean? (15 at Cuyahoga)

Patience is the top designers' secret ingredient, indeed.

(15 at Cuyahoga) that sounds right. working on a new course now, did this for the first few fairways and can tell it makes a difference. also didn't realize you could smooth it multiple times, i thought that was just after laying it initially. appreciate the insight, as if we needed another reason to spend more hours in the designer! cheers.

Never touch the spline handles, but I spend ages moving/smoothing spline points until I get the shapes I want. IMO, getting fairway lines right is one of the most underappreciated aspects of designing - it makes such a difference.

Definitely finding the right spacing between spine points helps with smoothness, and it’s situational some curves need closer points while other longer swoops it’s better to use less spine points father apart. I tend to use the same principles I learned from the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. If you’re not getting the right look, don’t be afraid to remove spine points sometimes that helps me.
