As I said above I have played all 20 selections. In 2 and to some extent a third, cases in the final ten, I found the lighting soooo dark (on Xbox) that, if I were judging, I wouldn’t be able to see enough to appreciate either good or poor design. Do the judges adjust lighting or am I going slowly blind!! I confirm my setting are fine as most courses are no problem to see! Am I alone in this? On individual course threads most folk, myself included, don’t raise lighting too much as we don’t want to seem critical. No idea which of the courses you are referring to, but courses look wildly different on PC vis á vi consoles. Textures, planting, lighting, it's wild. Almost positive my course falls into this category. I was hearing some people say my course looked dark when playing on console but then not dark at all on PC. I also design on PS4 with a nice Ben Q gaming monitor so I have adjusted the settings on the monitor where no course ever really look's to dark for me.

For me Group 1 is a head to head battle between two FANTASTIC courses - Blackmoor Downs and Tor.
This competition is throwing up some real top designers of the future.

My course is also dark in spots when the clouds cover but thats part of the environment I created, played with the lighting for ages to get it where I wanted.
Personally have played all the courses in the comp, and certainly in the top 10 there is not a poor course imo, if anyone thinks there is a poor course in the bunch, then they must have amazing high standards, and also a very good design ability for these to not meet their standards.
Anyways best of luck to all in the next round

That may well explain the issue and certainly worth bearing in mind if playing courses on console. I will also be alert to this when designing.

Moab Downs is excellent as well! That’s quite the tough group for sure. Need to play Blackmore Downs and play Tor again. Excited for those 3 designers to see what they have up next.

This takes me back to my earlier post about how on earth the judges can judge such disparate artistic and technical entries. A bit like judging art really. Moab most certainly is hugely innovative in the environment and the rock stuff, but I never once believed I was really “there”. Blackmoor and Tor were utterly believable - maybe that is simply my personal defining factor, but I also think they are both impeccably designed and executed. This is the fun of these wonderful competitions and why any course may win!!! If the judges want something really “different“ ( nobody thought Monet looked real) then indeed Moab is right up there!

mpadThis point boils down to exactly what Ben said earlier about judging, the judges are not looking for "best looking course", or the course they enjoy playing the best, it's a combo of everything, for which some points the general put it on the tee and hit it player may not even realise

Every contest we see a number of ‘X course is the best in the game/contest’ comments where it’s not even in the conversation but the player enjoyed it. There’s always going to be a place for that, but there’s so much more to it. I truly believe the biggest difference between average and good designers is having that critical eye. Look back at past contests and the judging playthroughs by other top designers who run them to work out what makes a great course great and try to understand why the course that won did win. For me, the lightbulb moment was the CC contest a few years’ back when I’d just joined. I remember being blown away by four courses in particular: St Cyrus, Lake Sofia, Necedah Pines and Raynor Ridge. Watching Reeb’s playthroughs of Lake Sofia and Raynor Ridge in particular were eye opening for realising how much I didn’t know about course design. Went back and watched them all, then watched all of Mayday’s major playthroughs and it was amazing how quickly I started seeing what both of them were about to say. Developing that understanding is vital, particularly when separating the very top courses.

Thanks Ben
This is, of course, a conversation thread - where views and reactions on the various courses are (hopefully merrily and certainly respectfully) quite properly exchanged - whilst we leave the judging to the judges. That’s the purpose of a forum to engage the community?
You may recall that I opened up my input very much underling how far apart my appreciation of some courses, from the perspective of a crap player, and a mediocre designer, can be from those who obviously know a lot better!! Your point entirely.
. . And I do LOVE Old Wickham - so I must have a little good judgement somewhere🤔

Oh no, I’ve just dipped in and out of the thread so haven’t read it all. Just happens to be a discussion we get every contest - my aim is always to try to help people understand why stuff happens/is good etc. Apologies if that came across as talking down or patronising - not the intent!

Hi Ben. No problem at all!
Is your Wickham course name at all related to Wickham in Hampshire (just down the road from me)?
