Ah bummer. Well, congrats to everyone who made it to the next round! I wish everyone the best luck and look forward to maybe being able to compete in a contest again. Your course had a ton of excellent stuff, I thought it would easily move on. That's a real bummer. I've got my eye on you though and I'm excited to see what you come up with next! Thank you man I really appreciate it! I should have something published real soon. And plan to keep designing as much as possible.

I have been traveling for work so I didn't get a chance to see this until this morning. So excited that little ole Giggleswick Field made the top 20!

As of this writing, 80% of the judges have come back with their scores for Round 2. Once done, we will need to rank Wild Cards which will take another couple of days. So, we are looking at finishing up early next week. Then we can think about an announcement.

Reading, in this thread, the disappointment of some designers of great designs which didn’t make it through, I thought you might like to read this.
I am playing all the top twenty courses (and have played many other entrants) as a modest recreational player. I also design to an adequate but not, usually, to Tour Worthy level.
Amongst the top twenty I have found a course (which I will not name) which I would have been surprised to have seen approved, and a course which is amongst the very best I have ever played in the game!
Judging is a subjective exercise!!!
If you love your course and have put in the work, many will love it and some may not!
The main thing is to keep on enjoying designing your courses - and playing those of others.

This the Rookie Contest, where most importantly, the point is to get feedback and learn how to get better. My oldest son just completed a Baseball Clinic this week during school vacation week. Absolutely the best coaching I have ever seen for kids. During the character building talks at the end of each session, the coach reemphasized their motto..."You WIN...or you LEARN!" That's it. What a great motto for baseball (and golf too) where managing and learning from your mistakes is such a big part of the game. And I think that certainly applies here!

Not that I'm judging this one, but because the debate crops up regularly, I want to affirm my belief that good judging is not subjective. There are so many aspects of design that, when you drill down into them, are clearly good or bad, that it often isn't that up for debate when judges know what they are looking for. For example: - Sculpting and surfacing: Evidently either good or bad based on realism, care taken, how well you tie the course into its surroundings - Hole designs: Is the designer varying the challenges? Are there strategic merits to each hole? Are hazards balanced? Do the greens fit the hole and enhance the question asked off the tee? Do holes play differently with varied winds and pose interesting challenges? Are there any holes that simply don't make sense? Does it hold your attention? Is there an easy way to make par on each hole? Is there in-built risk and reward? Does the course have depth i.e. are you still learning more about it after play five? Does it feel gimmicky / tricked up? - Planting and environment: Does it feel cohesive? Has time been taken? Does it feel authentic? This is less subjective than people think... I could go on, but I think this probably makes my point. Bad judging IS subjective ("oh, I like this course more"), but good judging is weighing up all of those various factors and deciding which course accomplishes what it set out to do the best (bear in mind that sometimes, the initial idea is the problem). Ultimately, judges will still have disagreements, but when backed up with those points and clear reasoning, I wouldn't call it subjectivity. Have fun

Great points Ben. Yes, of course on the actual judging of the contest, objectivity is what you are striving for...but as you say, ultimately there are indeed disagreements. Clear minded people disagree on a lot of things...and certainly golf courses are no exception!
Those not judging the courses are not meticulously invoking the criteria and will tend to have an even wider array of varying opinions, likes dislikes etc...which is ultimately--subjective.

Hi Ben
I very much agree, Ben, and like the rest of the community, respect your knowledge, craft and manner hugely.
My issue with the “poor” course was really very basic stuff - pins on super, super steep slopes, planting on light rough etc.
Also, I understand, it is a “design” competition where the wow factor will count and may (especially in a rookie competition) be valued above these playability and “getting it right” issues?
Taste, I think, is difficult to completely ignore, I remember really not enjoying some of the top courses in last year’s Dream Team Comp, because they reflected top designers’ sheer joy of creating really rolling fairways which I didn’t much enjoy (with notable exceptions) but found myself in a minority of one on that view!!
All said I cannot wait for the next round of judging - and much respect the hours that go into it.
