After taking a week vacation recently and spending the time in the Badlands of South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota, I have picked up some inspiration and have begun working on a new course.
Part of the trip was spent in Medora, North Dakota, a small town near Theodore Roosevelt National Park. T.R. is one of the most well-known U.S. Presidents, and spent a lot of time in the Dakota Territory prior to his time as Commander in Chief. He operated a ranch in the Medora area, went on hunting expeditions, and was inspired to work to conserve natural lands for the enjoyment and use of future generations due to his time in the Badlands.

So, feeling inspired by my visit to this area and also inspired by the Teddy Roosevelt and his love of the Badlands, I have begun work on The Bull Moose Club. The name for my course is taken from the nickname of the Progressive Party, which T.R. was a part of following his loss in the Republican Presidential Primary of 1912. The Progressive Party earned its nickname - the "Bull Moose Party" - when Roosevelt said he felt "strong as a bull moose" after losing the nomination in June at the Chicago convention.
Also, following an assassination attempt in Milwaukee in 1912, Roosevelt said, "Ladies and gentlemen, I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot, but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose."
More to come soon!

To honor T.R.'s time in Medora, and to offer an attraction for the out-of-town visitors to the area, a golf course designed by Michael Hurdzan opened for play in Medora back in 2004. The course is named Bully Pulpit Golf Course - "bully pulpit" being a phrase coined by T.R. to describe a public office or position of authority that provides its occupant with an opportunity to speak out on any issue. Bully Pulpit has been named on the list of Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses in America, and features several holes that run along side the Little Missouri River, as well as a back-nine stretch through the North Dakota Badlands. More info can be found here, including the scorecard and hole-by-hole tours.
