Having just spent the best part of 3 hours measuring things on google earth with the grand result of having planted about 7 trees, I think that might be a wise decision. However, now I’ve started, I really want to see what I can do with this. Just remember, it's mostly the ground features we are looking for. If you need to clear some trees around a certain creek around a certain course in Georgia to build your golf holes, thats totally fine. Thanks Matty However, I’m going to do it the difficult way by planting all the trees first and then removing the ones that get in the way of my routing. Just because I like making things difficult. I’m going to try to keep as many of the original features as possible and just modify the routing.

Another quick question. Are we allowed to retain original green complexes (e.g. might it be ok to have a narrow green just over a channel of water near to some flowers that possible grow in a southern state) if we change the routing of how you approach the green?

My interpretation is yes. Since the actual real life's holes aren't part of the contest abd aren't being judged, you can use the land as you see fit

I don't think I'll be doing this one, its way beyond my skill level. Not sure how I'd get all the elevations right. Distances, maybe, but everything else would be very hard. Totally get in the later post the time commitment concerns, but I'll only add here, mattyfromcanada is intentionally choosing competitions to challenge designers skill sets to help them grow, so even if your end result is a disaster it'll probably really boost your confidence and skills in the designer. I'm not the most thrilled with this one, but assuming I have time I'll definitely try to put an entry in! Perhaps I'll give it a go if I get some time. I realised from watching the two reviews of my 2.2 course that I just can't tell when bunkers look "right" at all (I found the 10ft level particularly hard with bunkers). Also noticed that the long par 4 along the coast should have been a par 5!

And honestly, it probably will be lol. I'll still probably at least give it a shot. I'm definitely not where I want to be as a designer yet, and realize that practice and doing different things that I probably normally wouldn't do gets me out of my "comfort zone" and in the end should make me better with the tools.

Regarding the no lidar rule. Does that apply to using external tools like QGIS for reference of the lidar data? Are rasters okay to use for reference? Rasters are about the same level of accuracy as google earth height measurement, so I'm guessing those would be fine?
Just trying to figure out what's allowed and what isn't. I'm assuming the no lidar rule is to stop the importing of lidar data in to TGC (so the land movements are all done ourselves)?

This is going to take a long long time to build but starting to get something that resembles the golf course. Now to design a new routing through it all.

gotta be honest, kind of struggling here and i don t think i am alone. is it against the spirit of this competition to dump info on yardages/etc here?
also if anyone has some good examples of MASSIVE dunes done in game i would appreciate that.

Count me on this one. Sounds like an excellent challenge. As this is my first DL challenge, we only have to submit the 6 completed holes that comply with the specs right? We publish with course name prefix DL2.3 and some other text or similar? Thanks
Regards Rick

Yup, just 6 holes. If you want to expand it to 18 later; that’s up to you. Name it whatever you want but most folks do include the DL2.3 in there somewhere

Going to be sitting out for this one. Taking the feedback I got from 2.1 & 2.2 to continue working on an 18 I started with hopes of getting it approved. BOL to everyone in 2.3! A little peak of the 18 I started;

Specific yardage of current existing holes is negligible as you will be creating your own unique holes. My suggestion for anyone struggling to get this out, and just a suggestion, would be to draw a grid on a google earth map in equal distance squares. Then draw a similar grid on your designer plot and trace out land formations according to corresponding grid squares. Look up some elevation or topo maps and sculpt away. Hope this helps!
