Welcome to week 28 at Wincoma by alejandroacantiladoI debated quite a while about what to do this week, as next week I've scheduled a virtual masters for you all to take part in.. and it could prove to be on the difficult side. I debated between going easy and tough this week... easy to give you a break, or tough to get you prepared. I tended towards the tough side. I did throw in some low winds in round 1 and 3, but high winds greet you in rounds 2 and 4. Course will play firm and fast early, but slow and soften a bit as the week progresses. The move up a tee in round 4 should provide a chance to gain some strokes back... even in the high winds. Good luck!

I'm posting notes again this week,
WINCOMA GC Par 72, 7388 yards
So I'm leaving notes this week but our architect of the week left some great info on his page and thread that I thought will help me more anyway - maybe that would be good to share here too...if Alexander doesn't mind.
Architect: Alexander Clifford:
"My last 4 courses (out of 6 that I've ever done, and the 4 good ones) have been explorations of different parts of Long Island. This one is the Eastern South Shore.
I approach all of these with the same design philosophy: penal hazards, but plenty of room off the tee. Lots of angles, and plenty of room for run-up shots. Big greens with many hole locations. Each shot gets tougher as you get closer to the green, ideally.
Continuing my exploration of the varied terrain of Long Island, Wincoma golf club is routed through pine scrub and sandy dunescape reminiscent of the eastern south shore. With a few references to the underrated Maidstone Club, the course is built to be played in windy conditions, with wide corridors and plenty of room the run the ball onto the firm greens. There are some tough pars (5, 8, 18), a gambling, drivable par 4 (7), and 4 par fives that are potential reachable, depending on the conditions. The four par 3s are routed in different cardinal directions, so you'll always face a new challenge with a different wind, with the short 17th (based on 14 at Maidstone) nestled amidst dunes, ocean, and pines."
Another cool course, this has greens perched up resulting in significant drop-offs on all sides typically. High lofted approaches may be the best way to hold these small targets. It's a well-balanced challenge.
1-4-457. A basic par 4 with bunkers guarding the fairway and green, it’s the undulation of both that create the challenge. It’s a tough green to hold.
2-5-565. Try to watch out for the bearded bunkers as we play down the fairway. They’re especially tall beards. The green again may be a toughie to grab on to and the vast bunkers left and right are deep.
3-3-209 #3 handicap Great views on this hole of the sea but it takes a great shot to hold the small green that leans to the right where a deep waste bunker lays. Running it up to the green with a low liner long iron could help in strong winds.
4-4-372. A relatively easy hole, a drive could leave an awkward pitch depending on the wind.
5-4-460. A light fade off the tee will help avoid the deep fairway bunkering to the right. The green, split from the fairway, has a center hump that can cause lag putt headaches.
6-4-462. A light draw driver off the tee can snuggle us between the fairway sand traps and leave an easy approach to a small green that falls off dramatically on its right side.
7-4-324. Drivable unless there’s a headwind, anything left will deal with a slew of bunkers and the slopes in between. The challenging green can cause problems even on short putts.
8-3-243 #1 handicap The par-3 beast of the course – this bad boy has more green space to land than most putting surfaces at Wincoma, but with a bad combo of wind and pin, this #1 toughest hole may require driver. Worst spot to miss is in the tall grass/mini-tree area to the right.
9-5-599. With 2 accurate shots with a little extra juice, we can reach the green in two.
10-4-465. The back nine gives us a tough drive to handle. A parade of bunkers walk through the fairway at the 275 yard mark. With a confident drive to the left, they can be cleared. Playing conservative will leave a long approach to a small green.
11-5-539. We’ll be rolling in the money if we can eagle both these holes – this hole would be the better opportunity – the centerline bunker is avoidable – no need to club down. The green best receives a lofted approach – with a few of these, a higher loft will keep our ball where it needs to be.
12-5-570. There may be some back-to-back eagles on some people’s scorecards on this section of the course. This plays downhill and relatively straight so two accurate shots will give us a good shot at glory.
13-4-435. A basic par-4-straight and slightly uphill, beware of the deep bunker with the hump on the left or it’ll be tough to reach the green. The green itself is one of the easier ones.
14-3-183. A tougher green that slopes to the right keeps birdies out of sight but par is manageable. The hole is one of the few that allows a runup shot.
15-4-397. Heading back to the sea, hopefully I don’t need my scuba gear since shot that fly the green might go for a dip. The green falls off to the left considerably.
16-4-455. In most conditions, the annoying fairway bunker closing off part of the fairway can be conquered with some extra power. The beach is all along the left and has some tall grass around to cause problems too.
17-3-153. A beauty of a hole along the beach once again, this is not too tough but some accuracy is still required along with reading the wind correctly.
18-4-508 #2 handicap. A final hole similar to TPC Sawgrass but playing along the beach like the final hole of Pebble Beach, sand and water are left and tall grass is to the right. A crucial tee shot – as anything that misses the fairway will probably result in bogey.
Last week, I tried out the True Sim tour to play Austin CC a course I like. I got my first promo marks since Thanksgiving finishing #3 in CC-B. I guess it was a long winter slumber and springtime woke me. I'll be lucky if I can even manage a top 25 for the rest of the year. I only have 2. Miraculously I finished #26 somehow on the True Sim one on my second start.
Good luck this week everyone

I went from being apprehensively comfortable to apprehensive by bogeying the last two holes.
That pin 1 placement on 17 is just mean!!
As always though, great choice, loved the course!

williamwes626 This is a great hole-by-hole, well done! I would add that definitely try and club down on the 11th, the green has a pretty wicked front to back slope. 18 is a beast, but there is a ton of room to bail out on the second shot to the right, and that's an easy up and down, at least compared to being on the beach. I wondered if designing 8 was fair, but then realized that golf isn't really supposed to be that fair, right? Especially since 3 of the next 4 holes are par 5s, and the preceding hole is a drivable par 4.

After last week playing my rounds late and being way above cut, I hit the practice mode this morning and right out of the gate i shot a -10. Bring this mother smucker on!
*Proceeds to drop a +6 in round 1*
So...*packs bags* Time to move to my new home at CC-L
Do you lose your tour card if you get demoted from CC-L? Quite frankly I deserve to lose it

I always think it's cool to have the majority of the holes feature options but then have those 1-3 penal and/or heroic strategy holes because those are the ones that take the golfer out of their comfort zone and make them commit to shots that test parts of their game they may not have done otherwise. I like the challenge of a long par-3 - is my long iron or wood game good enough to get away with a par? Can I pull off a proper partial driver tee shot?- and then to birdie them gives me that 'I conquered it' feeling. Good to know about 11 - any front to back slopes on greens are important to know about since they can sneak in as a surprise compared to more typical greens. Great course, I see you did the new links course Tuckahoe - I'll give that one a try too. Anyway, like I said you provided a balanced test here - kudos to you.

That was my strategy, so I am glad to hear that it worked out. Def let me know what you think of Tuckahoe- it's a similar vibe, but on flatter land, and has more emphasis on the ground game. And I think I've learned to make dune textures a bit better. Wincoma was only my 5th course, so I think I've been getting better!
