Certain IRL Course Architects such as Coore & Crenshaw have "personal templates" of certain golf holes that they redesign or gravitate towards.
Not necessarily a Macdonald template, but more like a specific style of hole that invokes a certain strategy that they copy over and over onto multiple courses that they make.
Do you guys have a certain style of hole that you cant help but make on every course?
I personally love sub-400 yard par 4s that aren't driveable. Specifically ones with large amounts of danger off the tee where driver is still a solid choice with a large elevation change to a small and severely undulating green. I love the fact that having a pitch into the green isnt a great choice in this game (pitches are generally the hardest shot IRL as well!) and forces a choice off the tee just based off of awkward distances in alone.

I like building a hole that takes away the landing area 90-110 yards out (not completely), forcing a decision between a long pitch and a full short iron.
At The Excelsior Club, I built the Leven and Knoll templates this way, but one of these always seems to appear in my routing. At Hitchens Razor, one could hit a six or seven iron to 100 yards out, a 5W to leave a short pitch over a deep bunker, or even hit driver off the tee and find the fairway behind the green!

Don’t know if it really qualifies as a template or not but with as frequently as you see them in TGC, I’d say the short 4 would be on just about everyone’s list. Not that that’s a bad thing😉

Now that mattyfromcanada has opened my eyes to it, I’m working to incorporate the dogleg par 3 into all of my future designs. It’s not as much of a template hole as a theme that I’m trying to test the bounds of for myself. How far can I push the difficulty/challenge of the width and angles concept while still being really fun to play for all levels. Put another way, I want to make the line between birdie and bogey so close that you’ll want to go for the birdie while knowing that failure leads to bogey more often than par...and can I do that using wind and turf rather than penalty areas.

I’m intrigued by this. Can anyone post a pic or two? Cypress points hole 16 is a classic example Asylum has one that plays as a dogleg from the back pins (hole 15)
Imo it works best on a 200+ yard par 3 where you can still "go directly at the pin" but there is no landing zone so it will roll well past. Kinda forces you to shape a shot in or play the contours of the green

Search for a course with “Knobcone” in the name. I think it has a 4 in the name as well. The 18th hole is one of a kind. Q

Still can't believe someone purposefully went on 2k's forums to beg rockmandan to port it to 2k21

Easy. Sightline from 15 at Friars. I think if I was fortunate enough to play Friars Head I'd probably just stop at 15 and never leave. Is the second image from Potunk? I know the first is but can't recall that view in no.2. Only other course I can think of is Lost Preserve.

I was trying to think of a way you could “dogleg” a par three without it looking like a redan. I can’t remember playing knobcone, but I’ve seen enough of RMD’s other courses to know that it’s probably not the best place to go for good examples of golf course architecture lol 😂.
