Will update this OP as we go. Working title: The Deschutes River Club Inspiration: Oregon High Desert with coastal-ish themes (but no coastline) - think Tetherow(!!!), Silvies Valley Ranch(!!), Bandon Trails(!), Gamble Sands(?) Theme: Steppe, on drugs Layout: 5-9-4, 36/35, 6900/6400 Status: Plot shaped, 18 holes routed, 24 greens built, 6 holes mostly planted, 10 holes somewhat planted, 2 holes not planted, clubhouse built. Likes: Elevation changes, routing, utilization of land features rather than bunkers/water, interconnectivity of routing (i.e. green flows right into next tee box for almost every hole) finishing 4 holes are all-freaking-world. Dislikes: Lighting, first 2 holes, having to bury lots of bushes by hand. Sample of Inspiration Photos: I'll post some of my WIP photos as it comes together. Maybe.

Dislikes: middle 1/3 of routing that isn't weird enough (yet) I like where your head is at.

If I can figure out how to get my course hard and dry enough so that plumes of particulate mushroom into the air upon contact, I'll really be in business.

I have made some real progress in the last few evenings, but we're not ready for pictures yet. This is kind of a big risk for me because the planting won't start to look right until close to the end, given the density of the shrubbery is so critical to the look. It's going to take a lot of exterior plot tree-framing to bring it together, but I can't do that until the shrubbery is mostly in so I'll know how much plant meter I have left. This goes out of my comfort zone because I usually plant as I go for the first 4-5 holes I build to ensure I'm going to like it. I am putting a lot of faith in my instincts that #1 and #18 are good enough as built to carry me through.

Brief update, as of last night's 2 hr sesh.
Holes sculpted: 1, 2, 3, 4, 15, 16, 17, 18.
Holes planted: 1, 3, 4, 17, 18
Clubhouse: roughed in, no detail work yet
Routing: working to bring holes 6-14 closer together from what was previously a fairly spaced out routing. I began with the vision of more "bandon trails" for the routing, including some longer walks between holes, and having each hole kind of isolated and unto itself. Decided against that after 1) realizing that the green-to-tee transition walks at bandon are special because they are experiential and tie the routing together, but that experience is lost in a video game and 2) I was leaving a big hole in the middle of the plot where some of the best features were, and that would have to be planted to tie the look together but without any real benefit...huge waste of planting meter. So I'm keeping the general hole shapes but using about 1/3 the space they were occupying from my rough routing.
Motivation: Still high! I think this course is going to be really good, actually. I learned a lot from feedback on Golden Isles. I've also never worked in the Steppe theme before because I hated the flora options, but now that I can plant it how I want, the look of "Oregon High Desert" is definitely achievable. It will look different from any other courses I've seen and hopefully that will set it apart in the competition. Expect greens to be somewhat more tame than my last course, but definitely not flat nor lacking in strategic interest. Plenty of quirk with this one, too.
Shoutouts: Panther Mike, Petty, Dr. Dre, my wife who has not yet gotten upset with how much time I'm spending on this, and Basil Hayden.
