Put in another 4-ish hours over the last two nights. The only holes not shaped/traced are now 8, 14, and 15. The 8th has always been a par 3.5 (about 250 yards from the back tees) but I'm not sure whether it will read par 3 or 4 on the card, which is the difference between 5-8-5 (72) or 4-9-5 (73). The par 3s range from 120 to 250 (if 8 is a par 3) and the par 5s range from 485 to 612. I think my favorite hole so far is 9, which plays atop a ridge almost at the highest point on the course with the green saddled at the bottom of a massive dune that looks super rugged and natural. The next best hole might be 7, which is a short par 5 with a blind tee shot, hitting up over a hill to a 120 yard wide fairway where the farther you go right, the longer your drive will run out to a flatter area, but the worse the angle for the second (hitting into a shallow green from the wrong side). If you drive it in the left part of the fairway, it will leave a longer second, but the green will be almost perfectly situated to receive a running 3 wood shot.
I'm starting to feel something for this course as it comes together.

Buddy I want to show you my plots so bad.
Also, it’s gotta be a par 3, don’t sell it short.

I am absolutely dreading planting this thing. The copy pasta function does not work well when all your bushes are buried below ground. It's possible to get a really nice scrubby look but it's going to take a monumental amount of hand planting below surface.

Definitely would be a nice option/addition to the designer

Two more productive hours last night. I broke down and added a water hazard to one of the par 5s. I had planned on abstaining from water on this course, but where the hole sits in the lowest section below the ridge, the design/strategy of the hole, and the way the perimeter planting ended up working leads me to think I'll keep it.
Also think I'm narrowing down possible names. High Desert Hills has always been a placeholder. There's some good inspiration for names in and around Bend, Or. where this course is set.
Steppe theme is growing on me, but I am still struggling with how to get the lighting where I want it. It may just be the color combo I've chosen, but the sun-at-your-back holes are exceptionally washed out, even with a lower afternoon sun and some haze. Tough scene right now.

There will be an untold number of holes on this course that have multiple greens. Maybe. I can't decide. Several places where there are two good greensites that fit in the routing for the same hole, and I just built them both. Might keep 'em. Might make an alternate routing or par 3 course highlighting them when I'm done and published. Members are rich and don't mind the maintenance costs.

One element of the course that I set out to utilize, and may now be regretting, was less emphasis on bold internal contours in favor of edge/surrounds contours that are crested and repel balls off false edges to short grass surrounds. There are very few bunkers on this course, I think most holes have 1-3, and several holes have none. So the penalty for a miss is somewhat exaggerated in one respect, because the ball will roll farther away from the hole. But it's also easier in that you have lots of options from the shortgrass to recover, including utilizing exterior contours. The only issue is that my playtesting is starting to reveal that the false edges may be too severe, and I'm either going to have to increase the size of the greens or reshape many of them so that balls will actually stay on the surface, as I'm ratcheting up the firmness to a million (it's in the desert, after all). Good learning experience.
