Event 9 - 2000 DORAL RYDER OPEN at Doral Golf Resort - Round 3
The weather continued to be kind, with just a gentle breeze hardly posing a threat - but perhaps the very fast greens might. Charlie Roberts continued to creep up the learning curve with his new equipment and managed a slightly improved 77. The big surprise today was Ian McKinley's frightful 79 which nobody expected, mainly caused by a couple of early horrible swings that badly affected his mindset and ruined any winning hopes. Randy Grant's 73 was his worst round of the event, while Bob Fletcher's 68 was his best and came after 3 dropped shots on the first 2 holes threatened to sabotage his round. As it is, Bob is now tied 32nd with Randy and no doubt they will embark on their own personal battle in the final round. Les Souter continued to impress and his 69 saw him in a share of 11th but, being 8 strokes behind the leader, it looks like Les's second win of the season won't be happening this week...

Event 9 - 2000 DORAL RYDER OPEN at Doral Golf Resort - Round 4
The players couldn't have wished for better scoring conditions today - no wind, straightforward pin locations, and perfect greens. Charlie Roberts' 78 showed he is still coming to grips with his new clubs, while Ian McKinley's relatively poor 74 ended a below par week (excuse the pun) when it had promised greater things after the first two rounds. Bob Fletcher was left thinking about all those missed birdie putts, even though his eventual 69 earned him a respectable tied 23rd position, and Les Souter deserved his share of 9th spot when he carded a 68, but even he had his own putting issues. Comically, when Randy Grant came off the driving range prior to his round, he inadvertently picked up the wrong set of clubs, but they did him no harm at all as he blitzed his way around with a stellar score of 62! Only a bogey on #17 prevented a 'clean' round and equalling the best round of the event, a stunning 61 by Stephen Ames in Round 2. Randy finished tied 3rd, 5 strokes behind the winner, tour pro Jim Furyk, but maybe the guests will have more joy in next week's Honda Classic...

Absolutely Dan!! I think we all play on a PC - but we are a TGC2019 society, NOT 2k21. If you still want to join, just look up the PLAYPGATOUR society - and check out our forum page if you haven't already done so, everything is explained there!

Event 10 - 2000 HONDA CLASSIC at PGA National - Round 1
Very fast, dry greens and a light wind made for an interesting day's play on this gorgeous course at PGA National. Randy Grant was holding his own until he encountered the 11th hole where he found water and eventually carded a quadruple-bogey. He staged a mini-recovery however, and his 71 was not a total disaster. Money leader Ian McKinley only had one bogey, on the 8th, but a reasonable 70 would have been a disappointment for him in what are his favourite conditions. Bob Fletcher very nearly made a rare eagle on #18 but he would be pleased with his opening 69. New tour addition Dan Elgin put on an impressive display on his way to a fine 67 which left him just two strokes behind the 8 (!!!) co-leaders. Les Souter had a fine front 9, but three 3-putts on the back pegged him back, although he still managed a very promising 66 to leave himself well-placed for Round 2.

Event 10 - 2000 HONDA CLASSIC at PGA National - Round 2
The players haven't had high winds to deal with since the Nissan Open at Riviera three weeks ago, but today they were back, bringing rain with them but rendering the greens less quick and more manageable. Bob Fletcher had a depressing time and came home with a 73, mainly due to poor putting (again) and his general play around the greens, and he had to wait until the final hole to grab his only birdie. Rookie Dan Elgin coped pretty well to card a 70, thereby maintaining a decent leaderboard position in the process. Coming from the windy north of England, Les Souter fancied his chances in these conditions, but the greens got the better of him and that, coupled with a few errors, combined to restrict the confident Geordie to a round of 70. In spite of that, he is still well-placed and only four shots behind the leader at halfway...

Event 10 - 2000 HONDA CLASSIC at PGA National - Round 3
The wind calmed down to a breeze for this round but the greens were still a little quick. Charlie Roberts continued to struggle with his swing timing but a 79 could mean there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Bob Fletcher also had timing issues, but he fought through them to post a 70 which left him way down the leaderboard. Ian McKinley had his best day of the event, carding a fine 67 that he himself was impressed with as it was devoid of any bogeys, and it lifted him into a tie for 17th. Les Souter began his round with 8 straight pars and, although he did eventually earn some birdies, a bogey on the 12th summed up his disappointment with his score of 69. Les is now in a share of 8th spot with a few tour pro's and Randy Grant, whose super 65 also included just one bogey, that coming on the 14th. This pair found themselves 6 strokes adrift of the new tournament leader - rookie Dan Elgin who shot to the top of the heap by firing a stunning 62!! Dan now holds a slender 1-shot lead over J P Hayes, and if he can hold his nerve in the final round a debut win is on the cards...

Event 10 - 2000 HONDA CLASSIC at PGA National - Round 4
With no wind to contend with, the only obstacle to low scoring was going to be the very fast, glass-like greens. But the big talking point was Dan Elgin, the overnight leader who had a golden opportunity to record a debut win. He disappeared from the course after playing just 3 holes, and the speculation is that perhaps he was taken ill or had some bad news. Charlie Roberts and Bob Fletcher had their own troubles to worry about - Charlie closed the event with a 93, while Bob's score of 81 contained a mixture of bogeys, doubles, and worse, sandwiched by birdies on the 1st and 18th holes. Ian McKinley could only conjure up a disappointing level par 72 to conclude his tourney, while Randy Grant repeated his opening day 71, a score that would have been substantially lower but for finding water on the 17th and following that with a 3-putt! The best-performing guest was Les Souter, but even he had problems of his own. After a fine front nine Les carded 2 bogeys and a double on the back, but he did sign off in style on #18 by holing a 65-yard pitch for eagle and a round of 70, enough to earn a share of 16th place.

Earnings table after the Honda Classic...
With only one event left to play in the Winter Trophy series of tournaments, the Bay Hill Invitational, Ian McKinley still heads the money list - but Tiger Woods will be returning to tour play at Bay Hill so Ian will have to be on his mettle! Randy Grant and Les Souter are also still in the running so it will be a fascinating tourney...

Event 11 - 2000 BAY HILL INVITATIONAL at Bay Hill Club & Lodge - Round 1
High wind was the main issue on the opening day, while the pins and greens were very manageable. Charlie Roberts is still getting used to his new swing and he struggled in with an 81. Les Souter didn't play up to his normal high standard and a 75 was all he could produce. Bob Fletcher and Randy Grant wouldn't have been too displeased with their 71's, but they both had putting problems along the way. Ian McKinley played well for his 70, but will be rueing his tee shot on the short 17th which led to a double-bogey, the only black mark on his card. However, he was still only 2 strokes off the lead at the end of the day, and well positioned to make a move in subsequent rounds...

Event 11 - 2000 BAY HILL INVITATIONAL at Bay Hill Club & Lodge - Round 2
The wind had decreased but the course was drier and the greens faster. Les Souter and Bay Hill are just not compatible it seems, as his round of 79 appeared to demonstrate, and the same could be said of Randy Grant who shot a traumatising 80. Randy started well with a bird on the 1st, but that was his only highlight and his round went swiftly downhill from that point on. Charlie Roberts' game is slowly improving, as shown by his 73, but can he find his A-game in time for The Masters? Ian McKinley played well but his only reward was a level par 72, while Bob Fletcher had one of his better rounds, a fighting 70, leaving him as the current best-placed guest but still only tied 27th. Ominously, Tiger Woods is the new tournament leader after a brilliant 64, a score also posted by Canadian Mike Weir who is hot on his heels...

Event 11 - 2000 BAY HILL INVITATIONAL at Bay Hill Club & Lodge - Round 3
With not a breath of wind blowing this could have been a round of low scoring. However, it didn't turn out that way, quite the opposite in fact, mainly due to some very difficult pin positions and extremely slick greens. Charlie Roberts (82), Bob Fletcher (81), and Ian McKinley (79), all suffered badly, while Les Souter's 74 was actually his best round of the tourney so far. Randy Grant also enjoyed his best round of the event, a very respectable 70 in the circumstances but, at the end of the day, the guest players occupied the bottom 5 positions on the leaderboard. Hopefully they can restore some semblance of respectability in the final round...

Event 11 - 2000 BAY HILL INVITATIONAL at Bay Hill Club & Lodge - Round 4
A light breeze and quick greens were too much for the guests to drag themselves away from the foot of the leaderboard. Ian McKinley (81), Charlie Roberts (77), Randy Grant (75) and Les Souter (74) may have had one eye on next week's Players Championship and/or the Masters in two weeks time, but they unexpectedly struggled again on Bay Hill's greens. Only Bob Fletcher, with a 69, gave a good account of himself, apparently using a mixture of his old swing and his new swing to good effect, and the future looks promising. TIGER WOODS won this event and consequently the Winter Trophy for being the top earner over the first 11 events of the season. Now we head into the Spring Swing, starting at Sawgrass...

The Winter Trophy, for the top money-winner over the first 11 events of the season, is won by Tiger Woods who grabbed his second tournament win at Bay Hill last week, to add to the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am trophy.
The Spring Swing, an award for the top money-earner over the second 11 tourneys of the season, begins this week at the Players Championship, hosted as usual at Sawgrass...
