Current earnings after last week's Azalea Open - and with only 5 tournaments left to play it looks as if Mark Lipping will be the 1970 season's top money winner! Meanwhile, Randy Grant leads the chase for the Autumn Cup, the fourth and final quarterly earnings award...

With only 4 events left to play we are coming to the end of the 1970 PGA Tour season. What comes next?
Well, commencing on 22nd November we will be following the schedule of the 2000 PGA Tour season. That was arguably Tiger Woods' most successful year, and our theme for that season's tour will be "TAME THE TIGER".
The PLAYPGATOUR society will remain on TGC2019 - for the time being...

Event 39 - 1970 Kaiser International Open at Mission Hills - Round 1
With near-perfect greens and not much wind the players had a great opportunity to make a good start to this tournament. Bob Fletcher failed to take advantage and could only post a 71, while Mark Lipping couldn't get much going at all but still recorded a slightly better 69, a score matched by Hans Kunok who is still trying to find his early-season form. Ian McKinley made his usual more than solid start with a fine 67, but still trailed Barney Buss and Olly Jose-Maria by 2 shots after their blistering 65's showed they mean business this week. However, the opening day plaudits went to Randy Grant who demonstrated that his huge improvement over the last couple of months is no 'flash in the pan'. Randy shot a stellar 64 but can he maintain that hot pace for another 3 rounds...?!

Event 39 - 1970 Kaiser International Open at Mission Hills - Round 2
The guests are dominating the top positions so far this week, but will it continue? Bob Fletcher again went under par, this time with a 70, but he is curently languishing in a tie for 24th, so improvement is required. Although Hans Kunok is in a share of 7th after following his opening 69 with a 68 today, he trails the leader by a massive 8 strokes, so he, too, needs to find an extra gear or two. Ian McKinley's 68 sees him in a tie for 5th, one stroke behind Mark Lipping whose impressive 65 elevated him to 4th place. One behind the pacesetter are Barney Buss, who repeated his Round 1 score of 65, and overnight leader Randy Grant, whose 66 keeps him well and truly in the hunt. Our new leader is Olly Jose-Maria after his sizzling 64 today, and these three promise to give us a Battle Royale for the title...

Sorry mate, no it's not - although you CAN use any clubs you like, Pro or Master.
Also, it's NOT on 2K21, it's on TGC2019.
The new season starting in November will be staying on TGC2019, and we have a good group playing, so you would both be very welcome to join us!

Event 39 - 1970 Kaiser International Open at Mission Hills - Round 3
Although the wind was at it's strongest today, birdies were in abundance mainly due to the relative flatness of the greens and the pin positions. Bob Fletcher couldn't believe how many trees he hit out there but still managed a 70, moving him up to a tie for 20th but light years behind the leading bunch. Mark Lipping's 68 saw him drop down to 7th, while excellent rounds of 64 and 62 from Ian McKinley and Hans Kunok respectively had them sharing 5th spot at the end of the day. Overnight leader Olly Jose-Maria's disappointing 68 demoted him to 4th place, a full 5 strokes adrift of the new leader, and one shot behind Randy Grant, who carded his second 66 of the event, and also Roger Instell, who fired an absolutely fabulous 61, the best round of the tournament so far. However, Barney Buss also excelled by shooting a superb 62 and he now has a 4-shot advantage going into the final day...

Event 39 - 1970 Kaiser International Open at Mission Hills - Round 4
The less said about Mark Lipping's 86 the better - suffice to say it helped him nosedive into a share of 50th, in an otherwise good week. Bob Fletcher's 74 meant he failed to register a sub-70 round this week, and he finished tied 28th. The remaining six guests completely obliterated the professionals, even though they all had their worst rounds of the event today. In the previous round Roger Instell had set the lowest score for the tournament, but that was forgotten today as he stumbled around in 77 strokes to finish 6th. Hans Kunok claimed 5th spot courtesy of a 73, while Ian McKinley's 71 lifted him into 4th place. Olly Jose-Maria's 69 was enough to come 3rd, while Randy Grant's valiant 67 could not move him closer to the overnight leader. That was Barney Buss, who fended off the pack with his own 67 to seize victory and his second title of the season, adding to the Westchester Classic he won in August.

Event 40 - 1970 Sahara Invitational at Shadow Creek - Round 1
It soon became apparent that Shadow Creek would provide a sterner test to the one the players faced last week! The greens in particular will challenge anyone's putting skills, and that doesn't even take into account the fierce wind forecast to blow this week. Randy Grant suffered the most, scrambling in with a 75, while Ian McKinley and Bob Fletcher barely survived the opening day with a pair of 73's. Mark Lipping had to make do with a level par 72, but the best guest performance today came from Hans Kunok who fought hard for a commendable 70. Even the legendary Jack Nicklaus struggled, finishing the day at the foot of the leaderboard after carding an unusually inept 76!!

Event 40 - 1970 Sahara Invitational at Shadow Creek - Round 2
The main problem today was the gale force wind. On the plus side the rain slowed up the greens a little to make them less precarious, but care still had to be taken. The best guest performer from the opening day, Hans Kunok, came unstuck and a floundering 78 saw him plummet down the leaderboard. Ian McKinley and Mark Lipping both improved on their Round 1 scores, carding a pair of very respectable 70's to be placed mid-leaderboard at the halfway point. After heeding some good mental advice from Ian, Bob Fletcher put it to good use and confounded everyone, including himself, by firing an excellent 67, lifting him into a share of 16th place and just five strokes off the pace. The tournament is warming up nicely...

Event 40 - 1970 Sahara Invitational at Shadow Creek - Round 3
The incessant wind has dropped a tad, but it has rendered the greens very fast and very firm, so players will have to adjust their game accordingly. Hans Kunok remained at the bottom of the leaderboard even though he bettered his second round score by carding an equally poor 77 today. Randy Grant's second 75 of the tourney leaves him just above Hans by two strokes, so this pair now have their own private battle going on to see who can avoid last place. Mark Lipping is improving round by round, and his 69 now places him in a share of 23rd, six shots off the pace, so he can't be removed from the equation just yet. Another gradual improver is Ian McKinley and he played well for a glowing 67 today, just one stroke ahead of Mark and still in with an outside chance. After boosting his position in Round 2, Bob Fletcher became even more upwardly mobile today by blasting a great 65. He is now joint leader with tour profesional Babe Hiskey, and must be feeling confident going into the final day...

Event 40 - 1970 Sahara Invitational at Shadow Creek - Round 4
The strong winds returned and combined with firm, speedy greens that meant birdies would be hard to come by, as well as pars on some holes. Hans Kunok avoided the ignominy of finishing bottom of the leaderboard by carding his second 70 of the week, a good effort in the conditions. Ian McKinley slumped to a 78 to spoil what was looking to be a pretty good tournament for him. Also struggling was Mark Lipping, who recorded his worst round of the event, a 74, to finish tied 37th. The only guest player who could be reasonably happy was Bob Fletcher, who started the final round as a joint leader. Unfortunately, the weather got the better of him today, and his putter also wasn't working well. He needed to hole a 22-footer for birdie on the 18th to force a play-off but it wasn't to be. His eventual 72 left him in a tie for 2nd, just one stroke behind the winner, Babe Hiskey, who won his second PGA Tour title five years after winning his first...

Event 41 - 1970 Heritage Classic at Kiawah Island - Round 1
Kiawah is tough enough, but the adverse weather conditions in the form of strong winds has turned this unique course into a monster. An indication of how difficult things were today was only one professional managed to break par! Hans Kunok (79) and Mark Lipping (77) fared the worst of the guest players, while Bob Fletcher and Ian McKinley succeeded relatively well by limiting the scorecard damage with a brace of 75's. The forecast for tomorrow's second round is not good so similar scores are expected...
