Went with a fall country club style theme here. A par 71 playing at 6996 yards this course features tree lined fairways and creek side ponds. All photos here imgur.com/a/1ptZTv3
Hole descriptions below
Hole 1: Par 4 498 yds
The first hole at Calvert Woods is a long par 4 that winds through the trees and plays as a slight dog leg right. The fairway bunker off the tee will catch any errant drives on the right while the tree lines will catch any hard slices or hooks. The green is a medium sized slightly elevated 2 tier green with a small elevated left portion and the larger lower right portion. Protected by 3 bunkers, 2 putts here will be key if you want to start strong.
Hole 2: Par 5 503 yds
Inspired by the 2nd at Augusta and 6th at Riviera, this short down hill dog leg left par 5 is your first good birdie opportunity of the day, Make sure your drive is long enough to get past the left side tree line and you will have a long iron or hybrid into the green to get on in 2. However this holes protection lies with the bunker in the middle of the left half of the green which makes an eagle or birdie putt interesting depending on flag position.
Hole 3: Par 3 219 yds
The 3rd hole is the first of five par 3’s at Calvert Woods. However it is also the first of three of the five par 3’s over 200 yds. Long iron or hybrid over the pond will be required to get on the dance floor. To the left of the green slopes to a run off surrounding a bunker while over hanging trees come into play on the right. Anything short last chance of survival will be the bunker just in front of the water.
Hole 4: Par 4 398 yds
This medium length par 4 winds through the tree line as a double dog leg. Splitting the trees will be your target off the tee. Once you make the clearing you will have a short iron or pitch into the green. Beware of the creek running parallel to the hole as it creeps back towards the left of the green. The hourglass green is protected by two bunkers off of the left and right. A good tee shot will be the key to making a birdie here.
Hole 5 Par 3 170 yds
The second par 3 is also the shortest par 3 on the course. Don’t let the score card fool you though as some pin placements may play as far as 190. The 5th is parallel to the 4th playing in the opposite direction so the creek comes back into play on the left. A bunker on the right and run offs on the front and right provide this long narrow green extra defense.
Hole 6 Par 5 509 yds
The 6th hole is a short par 5 separated into two split fairways. The creek separates the fairway into an upper and lower tier. Splitting the tree line on the tee shot is the goal and don’t go right as the creek creeps in towards the landing area. The fairway will run out just before the waterfall, however even the longest hitters will have plenty of fairway room. The second shot will be a fairway wood or hybrid down hill to the second fairway tier and green with the creek now on your left. Anything short will land in the 3 front bunkers protecting the green while go left and you will meet a drop off and small bunker.
Hole 7 Par 4 281 yds
The 7th hole is a straight away drivable par 4. Sitting at only 281 yds longer hitters can go long of the green here so tread carefully. However it is better to be long then short as anything right will end up in the lake. The 7th provides an excellent opportunity to make birdie if you missed your chance on the Par 5 6th.
Hole 8 Par 4 367
This short par 4 runs back up the lake and 7th hole. Driver off the tee will leave you in a narrow landing position between the large bunker on the left and lake on the right, but only a pitch into the green. Lay up with 3 wood and you will have a larger landing area and a full wedge shot in. This greens only protection is the right to left slope and a small bunker off the left. However anything to far left or right will be in the trees and too long and you are on the 6th green.
Hole 9 Par 4 508 yds
Playing just one yard shot of the Par 5 6th this long par 4 could be one of the hardest holes on the course. A tee shot in the fairway is required to get a clear view of the green on this dog leg left, and once in the fairway you will be left with a long iron or wood into the green depending on the wind. The 9th is a good test of skill after 3 good holes to score on.
Hole 10 Par 4 326 yds
The 10th hole and perhaps my favorite hole is very much risk reward. Measuring at 326 yds the hole could measure much shorter than that if you think you ca cut the corner and over the trees. There is a small gap in the trees to get up and over, find it and you will drive the green, miss it and your ball may bounce off in any direction. If you choose to hit 3 wood or less off the tee, be mindful of the small pond that guards the front of the green.
Hole 11 Par 3 234 yds
One of the signature par 3’s on the course is a long par 3 playing downhill and adjacent to a lake. Try not to get to caught up in the waterfall view as the lake cuts into the the bail area and will come very much into play. The medium lengthen L shape green will make it hard for a tee shot to stick and will require two good puts or an up and down to get out of there with par.
Hole 12 Par 5 549 yds
The 12th is a mid length par 5 the dog leg rights and meanders through the trees. If you land in the fairway you should be able to get on in two, however the 4 oval bunkers and small pond offer this green protection from any high risk golfer seeking eagle
Hole 13 Par 4 454 yds
The 13th is a straight away mid length par 4 that offers a good chance at birdie The large fairway bunker on the right will catch any poor tee shots and the trees on the left will catch any snap hooks. Find the fairway and you will have a gap or pithing wedge into the green which is protected by two large bunkers left and right.
Hole 14 Par 3 190 yds
The second signature par 3 at Calvert woods was inspired by the 12th at Augusta this long par 3 plays over a creek and slightly downhill to a narrow and long green. This green has run offs both left and right and a small bunker in the back. Don’t be short or you will end up in the small bunker which is your only protection from the creek.
Hole 15 Par 5 560 yds
The 15th is the longest par 5 on the course and is a dog leg right playing downhill and then back up. The green is two tiered and perched upon a mound surrounded by 3 large bunkers. Drop off galore protect this green so make sure you stick the landing.
Hole 16 Par 4 381 yds.
The final home stretch begins with a 90 degree dog leg right par 4. Your line off the tee is over the left edge of the bunker which will leave you a mid to long iron into the green. Beware of the small pond about 30 yards short right of the green. It should not be in play but and wayward approaches could make a splash,
Hole 17 Par 3 215 yds
The 5th and final par 3 is another long one. Straight as an arrow this green is surrounded by 3 oval sized bunkers and drop offs on all sides. Be vary aware of the group of trees and shrubs off to the right as the area is marked Out Of Bounds!
Hole 18 par 4 513 yds
The closing hole at Calvert Woods is a long demanding par 4. A narrow tee shot is required to split the trees off the tee which will lead to an open wide fairway Playing as a dog leg right you should be left with a long iron or fairway wood into the green, or more depending upon the wind. Catch a glance at our tennis club as you make your way down the 18th fairway and turn your eyes towards a raised green surrounded by 3 bunkers. Behind the green since a lake which should not come into play for skilled golfers. The clubhouse, bar, and practice green overlook this green to the left as you try to make one final birdie.
