It's been six months since I purchased TGC2019 and five months since I took on this course designer. When I first started I thought I would only ever recreate real courses - until now. I had a blast creating Storm King Golf Resort and I hope you enjoy playing it. This course is about golf and strategy. The sun's straight overhead and I hope this is a test of your game, and that each time you play it you learn something and want to try again. I've played it at least 100 times now in the design process and I am still figuring it out myself - it came alive.

Here is a 10 minute video that steps through the course.
I made this video before I made my final changes to plantings and shaping. (like those ugly red flowers on the #2T I've since mowed down!) You will have to play the actual course to see the final version.

Wow. This was a unique experience for sure. Definitely a one-of-a-kind course in this contest. The preview shots and video are definitely well done. Since this course has some very challenging holes, it would be nice to see what you could do if you weren't, at times, trying to ruin the player's day. Looking forward to what your next course has to offer!

Looking forward to what your next course has to offer! Thanks Babybull!! That's exactly what I want to here. I honestly hope that each course I build will be like a riddle - or think action/adventure video game. Each time you play you get a little further before dying and having to start again. A friend of mine starting playing Storm King a couple of weeks ago and was furious after the first round. I told him to keep playing and consider each hole a riddle that has a couple of solutions to turn big scores into sub-par opportunities. A couple of days ago he said he finally cracked it and went from +22 the first round to -1 the other day! So for this reason I fear I won't win the contest - cause on the surface (and first couple times around) the course may seem unrealistically punishing. I do argue that -20 is possible if it's played well, but it will punish folks that don't learn from each round they play. I've been +7 on the front nine because I misplayed a couple of holes - and then ended up even by 18, as scoring chances abound. I played a round on Storm King with that same friend the other day and I was so happy to watch him dissect and play each hole in a way that reminded me of all the design considerations. In fact, I learned a few tricks from him on my own course! I almost wonder if having six of each par makes the course more intense? I'm glad you are looking forward to the next one. I've starting working on a course based on the rocky ground of Manitoulin Island fishing village in Northern Lake Huron. I've decided to stick with the same even distribution of par 3s,4s and 5s. Less water on this course - just a big river and a ton of rock.

... but in all seriousness, I'd really like to know what parts of the course came across as trying to ruin the player's day. I really do try to provide multiple options for each hole and I certainly don't want par to be about good luck and not smart shot making. Hole #5 green has a deadly drop-off behind the green by a short third shot in does end up on what's a flat green. In fact holes that are tough to get to are often completely flat. Easy reachable greens are the toughest. The one hole I worried most about was the 260 yard downhill Par 3 to the peninsula green(#12). I lost sleep over that hole! Eventually I did a few things: Made the green long so shots can land and role without going off. I tried to shaped the water's edge to keep balls on land. I added a bunker to bailout to. I made the neck of peninsula wider and sloped towards the tee to better catch errant shots. I even added a large bolder in the water left of the green as a hail mary that may bounce an otherwise wet shot back onto dry earth. I even added a long strip of fairway at the waters edge, so if someone had to drop they would have an easy pitch to the green to try and save bogey. If your shot is straight then #12 becomes easy - providing you compensate for the elevation change. You mentioned the video - I could have done an hour each hole just debating all the subtle details on each hole - like so many others here do. Maybe I need to start one of those online video channels to go through it all. Maybe that'll be the goal on the next project. I almost wish i could do the routing and then turn each project over to someone else to do all the stuff to make the course look pretty. Wow. This was a unique experience for sure. Definitely a one-of-a-kind course in this contest. The preview shots and video are definitely well done. Since this course has some very challenging holes, it would be nice to see what you could do if you weren't, at times, trying to ruin the player's day. Just realized I never responded to Jerry's follow-ups, but I was trying to play and comment on every course for that contest(1 metric sh%$ ton of them to be exact). Don't really remember much of the course to comment now... sooo......

Yeah, was just curious how this went down. But figured I was digging up old thrash that people would rather steer clear of.
Carry on.

Played this today. Loved it. Hated it. Had fun. Brutal. Enjoyable. Easy. Difficult. Mad. Reasonable. Unreasonable.
All of the above. 😀

I liked it !
It was my only subpar round of the day yesterday at -1, with a stunning (for me) 1.17 pph. Yes, that indicates an appallingly low GIR number, but subpar is subpar. Like a sloppy Brooklyn strike, I'll not be giving it back 🙃
Followed it up with SS's Dystopian, so maybe it's all relative 🙄 ?
