We haven't even gotten into the cliched "The Greens at whatever" course names yet. Also, we need PithyDoctorG for his rant on random courses ending in "National."

As a fellow pedant, I love everything this rant stands for. Hot take incoming, (I stress, this is an individual take) I hate the use of the @ symbol. Sorry, again, Eric. Mantis is cool though. Especially those Mad Mantis follow ups you did. Oh, and check the translations of your courses mean what you think they mean. You know who you are - and there’s more than one of you 😉. On a serious note, I find naming courses one of the hardest parts of designing. I will put it off for ages and then spend a good two hours searching Google Maps or throwing names at jwtexan until I find something I like. They really matter and need to be memorable. As Matt says, don’t rush it or do something stupid. Quite why anyone would name it after the Coronavirus though is utterly beyond me.

I agree with Matt... having been a reviewer for a few months now, you people come up with some hilariously bad names for courses. I've posted this before, but I'll do it again here after Ben brought up our many messages throwing name ideas around. I'm not that creative... Tantallon is a real place. The loops was what the routing looked like. Far Water literally came from "island name generator" google. And Overbrook came from this...

I love this. I have The Virgin (just a working name) and can’t come up with anything. Plenty of forest dominated by pines and very green. I mentioned in another post that I will not use the words green or pines for any reason. There is not much of a theme. I suggested Virgin Fir GC to my oldest and he almost choked on breakfast. After playing 800 courses in 2019 I know what doesn’t sell.

My dirty course naming secret? If I can't think of a name, I use a road/street name as a starting point. Plus, looking for good "course name" streets is a good road trip game.

We haven't even gotten into the cliched "The Greens at whatever" course names yet. Also, we need PithyDoctorG for his rant on random courses ending in "National." Ha, I mainly reserve the "National" rant for real courses that aren't Augusta National or National Golf Links of America (which, when you break it down, is the ultimate in pretentious course names, they just happen to have a course awesome enough to back it up). Anyway, it works like this: just take your course location, or hell, just your name and slap on "National." I'm sure you host a major event and are then ultra-exclusive for the other 51 weeks of the year. And I'm sure there's a "national" membership where the likes of Bill Gates jet into to town for a weekend to play your auto-genned course that you worked on for six whole hours. Piggybacking on the incongruous course names, how about abusive use of "Links"? The Links at Sycamore Jungle, anyone? Actually, I stole that one from Geoff Shackelford. He has a few more gems in one of his books: Animals doing strange things (e.g. Dancing Rabbits, Bowling Raccoons, Praying Mantis), or "The [Links/Experience/Challenge/Tradition/etc.] at [Course Name]" (e.g. The Surrender at Blissful Creek Ranch and Riding Club).

Reminds me of the old game where you combine your first pets Name and first street Name to get your stripper name.... Mine is "Dusty Mahogany" Dusty was a cat FYI

I was almost guilty of the bland and also contradictory naming on my first course. Kathmandu Valley (which is a real valley) was going to be Summit Valley Golf Club... yikes, glad I found a location for it. If I can find real world inspiration for my courses, that certainly helps in the name. Or while designing I start thinking about what the crazy backstory of it will be, and I might be able to come up with something that way, as was the case with Mighty Oak and Scorched Horizon

The Greens @ Hill Valley Pines Links National it is Lol. The first 4 words apply to my course. But I’ve decided. Building off what matt27 said I am just going through google maps of upper Canada and I will find a name. Add a synonym for water or a local animal and presto.
