Can confirm the WC course features neither a colour nor the word Bay. Sorry to disappoint.
Nice to see this thread still alive. Looking back on it, I think it’s probably the course that pushed me the most and made me better, even if I do see a lot of things I would change now.

I'll always love the greens though Same, that why I'd kill for a Par 3 routing here.

I would love to know what you would change about this course. The only thing that I would have liked to have seen was a band of light rough to help balance the penalty for an unfortunate roll off of the fairways and greens.

I'm actually going to go against what you've said here (although I think a members version would be better with the light rough). For a championship course designed with TGCs best in mind, I think this is a great difficulty for them.

Looking back on it, I think it’s probably the course that pushed me the most and made me better, even if I do see a lot of things I would change now. I would love to know what you would change about this course. The only thing that I would have liked to have seen was a band of light rough to help balance the penalty for an unfortunate roll off of the fairways and greens. A lot of it is the reason why we got rid of the major contest: the target difficulty level means a few holes are tricked up in a way I don’t really like. It’s also partly a product of me ignoring a rule book and whilst I think that was fun, there are greens and angle plays that would have been better with the greens being about 1/3 smaller. Buuuut it’d be a very different course and perhaps part of its relative success is due to ignoring those conventions so dramatically. Sometimes, it gets harder to design the more you know. So, off the top of my head: - Rip up 17 and make going for the green in two more of an option. Probably use the river on the right as I originally intended. - Make going for the 16th a better option for the pins on the left. - Make 14 tee shot less punitive. - Reduce the size of 13 green, losing the right third. - Make more holes have one clear strategic play. Lots of the holes are trying too much IMO (I.e. for this pin you go left, this pin you go right etc). It can require too much prior knowledge in spots. - Widen the right sliver of fairway on 9. - Move the tee on 12 further right to stop that play to 10 green off the tee. - Remove a couple of central hazards so that sometimes the hazard is the unpredictability of the red lie rather than bunker (e.g. 6th). Probably more lol. I’m good/bad at self-critiquing. My main critique (I think shared by judges) would be that it all feels a little random. It isn’t, but the course requires such an in-depth knowledge of the greens for approach angles and kickers etc that it can come off that way. There’s a lot I love, but, equally, I’m a much better designer than this time a year ago and so there’s a lot I see now that could be better.

Thanks for the reply. Won't argue with you on your own course. I will just say that a course like this one needs to exist in a video game with hundreds and hundreds of courses that are created. Does the course play randomly? Maybe, maybe not. But if it is random then one will probably have a slightly different experience each time they play the course. Plenty of other non-random courses to choose from if a player can't take the heat.

I know its pros as well and I don’t mean random in the sense of bounces - you’ll definitely get that. I mean that the greens look like they are random therefore it doesn’t matter where you come in from due to the crazy slopes whereas in fact they reward very specific angles and areas of the fairways dependent on pins.

Black Salt Valley (Open) is now published ahead of hosting the American Open. Now playing a par 70 at just 7222 yards, this version features a lot of the changes detailed above, including an all-new 17th hole and a number of holes edited. Huge thanks to PithyDoctorG Energ1ser tpetro and Q for their thoughts during the remodel. Most of the pins are the same. Default speed now 173 to give some more options and Q was kind enough to add some multiple tees to allow us to move tees up/back on certain holes. No punches pulled, this is a brute. Get your popcorn ready.
