I'm going to stick to my promise of not getting involved in the debate side of things, and just post links to stuff.
But just wanted to say, this thread has been really good so far; mostly factual stuff, a few opinions as well, from both sides, that have been allowed to go out there without the stupid stuff from the previous thread ๐
I agree with a lot of the posts so far, especially a few from just above ๐

I hope that here in Italy, when this thing will be ended, someone of us will remember to our politics that in the last 20 years almost 10 billions of euro are been stoled from our healthy system (it was one of the best in Europe), forcing to close almost 10000 spots in hospitals and almost 800 hospitals. And who knows how many intensive care reparts. Now they are crying about how disperetely we need all of them. And if part of this happened cause our politicians are notorious thiefs, is also true that a HUGE part of this happened cause we had to find from somewhere the money needed to stay into the swindle that Europe in fact is. And we were forced to cut mainly SERVICES. As the majority of the countries in the South of Europe has been forced to do.
Furthermore, 30 years of making the universities of medicine in all the country something for the few, with closed number and dozens of absurd obstacles for who tried to became a doctor, now created an absurd generational gap. We miss young doctors at such a point that now we are forced to ask to the retired doctors to come back to the work. And who works now to fight in this emergency, is forced to do it for 12-16 hours per day, often with no safe conditions at all. Is not a case if there are hundreds of contaged doctors, nurses, first aid workers. Their % on the total of the contaged people is impressive
And the majority of these doctors is forced to be an hero for an offensive amount of money.
Maybe i'm an a$$hole, but it's hard to talk about this virus keeping seriously politic out. Cause it's hard to believe that our governments are seriously concerned about our health and that they have all the interest to fight to have an healthy population. This for me is a lie. I don't know how things are in your countries, but i can say how they are in mine. And here, is by 30 years that they are systematically destroying our healthy system, our schools (again, one of the best in Europe in the '60-'80), our culture, our wallets. It's hard to don't believe, looking at the whole picture, that somebody simply wants to have people poor, ignorant, scared and unhealthy. And with enough money to survive but never enough to live with no fear for the future.
And, for all these reasons, being simply impossible for a family with more than a son to save some money, between low wages and high taxes, here the situation is so dramatic that, after 3 weeks of commercial activities closed, we already will have hundreds, thousends of families with not enough money to pay bills, rents, in short to survive.
So now i'm really curious to see if all these "Together we can" and "Everything will be fine" i hear in these days from tv, politicians and various people, it will be of some actuality, when it will be the moment to help these families with money and not with empty words or fuked ashtags.
Sorry for the rant. I hope in your countries the situation is different..despite i fear is not so much.

Looks like someone from Imperial College has revised the estimates from half a million deaths to less than 20000 In the UK and says heโs reasonably confident the health service can cope. www.newscientist.com/article/2238578-uk-has-enough-intensive-care-units-for-coronavirus-expert-predicts/After what I saw last year when my mum was ill I wouldnโt be so sure. Anyways, NH will be adopting the stay at home policy as of midnight tonight and be in effect until May 4th. My wifes hospital is going to start screening temperatures of everyone entering the building today as well, would have thought theyโd have been doing that 2 weeks ago.

I had the same figures, but the article I read, which I linked in the other thread, was talking about different scenarios for each number; it said it was 500k for do nothing, 250k for distancing policy, 20k for strict lockdowns.

It's also about timing.
We are now in a form of lockdown, but this thing has been spreading like crazy since the start of March. The measures we are taking now will only reap any benefit in 2/3 weeks.
By which time god knows how much damage will already have been done

My local grocery store has hours 5:30 - 7:00 a.m. I am a senior and am not getting out of bed to shop.
So, I went to the store after dropping the better half off and other than only 10 customers and shelves mostly filled, I got everything on our weekly shopping list. They are limiting how many of "essentials" we can buy.
I tell you that as a lead up...10 customers, only two of us did not have gloves on, there were 3 with facemasks on, one had on a full hazmat like suit and I am still shaking my head at the suit and.....there was a millennial aged man shopping while wearing a see through plastic bag (w/mouth hole) on his head with elbow length gloves on his hands.

How soon after this virus dies off (for this season) do you all see you all getting back to normal?

I would say it will be about 4-6 weeks once we see a decline in United States cases. I project this to be around April 15th and businesses will start to resume maybe May 15.

This virus has been like a slow roll out of a software update though. It isn't hitting everywhere at the same time at the same level. For all we know, New Orleans may have a higher % rate of infections than NYC in a month from now but Miami may have a higher % of deaths 2 weeks after that. It's unpredictable. Dr. Fauci said the virus will determine the curve. Not to question him, far from it, but I'd say the virus + our behaviour towards it will determine the curve. There seems to be way too many people who are still not taking this seriously enough for our society to get a decent eradication any time soon. .

It occurred to me that April 15th is not 4-6 weeks from now. I am a moron, lol. Monday morning I got the call not to come into work for three weeks so my brain has already gotten soft ๐๐๐. Nonetheless, May 15 is still my projection.
