Thought I'd start a thread on your playing of real golf.
The weather round my area has been crap of late, it's felt like it's been raining for most of the last 4 months. Because my home course has three holes next to a river and the top of the course is built on clay based soil, it does suffer in heavy rain. Hard work by the greenkeepers installing extra drainage over the past 4 or 5 years has helped a lot, but we do struggle at times. In fact, when the river flooded a couple of months ago, we still haven't got two of the three river holes back in play yet.
Because of this, we are playing the course in a funny order, going from the 2nd to the 8th holes, carrying on to the 14th before playing 5, 6, 7, 16, 17, 18 and two temporary par 3s that have been hastily built on the practice ground. Because of rain this week, when I played on Saturday the 11th, 17th and 18th holes were also closed due to the wet conditions, leaving 15 open for play.
I'm a decent club player - my handicap is 6 and in the Saturday Club I play off 5. I struggle now though. Having a young family means I generally only play once a fortnight so I struggle for consistancy. This past Saturday though I hit the ball better than I have in a long, long time. I was very pleased with my game. I got to the 14th tee (playing as the 8th hole) three under par having eagled the par 5 10th and birdied the 12th. I pull out my 4 iron on the tee - it's safer than driver and will leave me a full wedge into the green. I shank the tee shot, it ricochets off a tree and finishes in a greenside bunker on the 6th hole, which is about 30 yards to the right of the 14th tee. I don't score on that hole.
My problems involving the par 3 6th don't end there. Having hit it to about 20 feet, I then 4 putt for a double bogey.
I finish with 30 points. Arse. At least I won £3 for getting a 2 on the 16th.

Still not even close to being able to play for me.. courses are under a couple feet of snow and will be until mid April. You can well imagine I'm champing at the bit every year during Master's time to get out there.. 5+ months every year with no golf is a long time

Too cold and snowy here in Northern Indiana. Makes me miss Los Angeles, but then again, I couldn't play very often there due to cost, crowds and time.

I was able to play yesterday. Northern Nevada..... 48 degrees F (8c) wind 6-12 mph
Shot 45 on the front, with a quadruple bogey..... and 41 on the back with a triple bogey.... for an 86
I am a little better than a bogey golfer but I have a great time! I get out maybe 8 times a year, so, I can't complain too much about my score.

I play once or twice a week depending on what sporting events and games are being televised on Saturday. I always play on Friday's since I work Mon-Thursday and I would say it balances out to where I play 2 saturday's in a row so probably 75 times a year I play. I am fortunate to live in Scottsdale Arizona where I can play 12 month out of the year. I honestly could not live in a climate where I had to put away the clubs for months at a time, so kudos to all of you for doing that.
I am currently playing to a 2.8 handicap but I always joke and say that on a good day I play to a scratch and on my bad days I am an 8. On Friday last week I shot 79 next day I play the same course in almost identical conditions and shoot 70. My goal this year is finding more consistency and becoming a scratch golfer.

When I am able to get out and play, I'm not very good at all. I'll usually finish in the upper 90's. I used to take golf more seriously when I was college age before I had more responsibilities but I still didn't seem to play any better even when I played more. So now I just enjoy myself on the course, take in the sights, appreciate the architecture more, stay away from risky shots, play stress-free way-of-the-playa style, I don't even really keep score anymore other than kind of keeping an idea of how I'm playing in my head.
I have actually found playing this way for me has helped me play much better tee to green. One of my final half rounds of the summer I shot below bogey golf for 9 holes

I also found enjoying playing rather than being competitive enabled me to play better.
When I was playing 2-3 times a week, I was very competitive. I played in as many club competitions as I could, was a regular for our team in the local league and when I didn't play well I got frustrated and moody.
In 2015 my wife and I had our daughter and my golf went to once a fortnight (on average). From then I hardly play in club competitions and I do still occasionally play for the league team when they are short. Crucially though, I play for the enjoyment. Early the following season, I played my best ever golf. I shot a personal best five under par 64 (knocking 4 shots off my previous best) and followed that up with a one over par 70 the next time I played. As a result, my handicap came down to my best ever 5.0

We finally had 18 holes open on our course for the first time in ages on Saturday.
I hit the ball like Adam Scott. I putted like Brian Scott (a 60 odd year old member at our club who plays off 23).
Finished with 33 points. Really pleased with how I'm hitting the ball the last couple of times I've played. Now I need to sort out my putting.
And the day after Storm Ciara hit the area and the course was closed again. While yesterday we had a dumping of snow. Fecking hell.

Courses are finally open in Minnesota as of a couple weeks ago! Played my first round on Sunday and hit my first hole in one! What a way to start the golf season! Really glad it happened late in the round because I was completely checked out for the final hole after that

Back when I played 50-75 rounds a year I was a scratch golfer, but also inconsistent like you're describing. Could shoot anywhere 65 to 84. Now I play about 10 rounds a year and I'm a 6 handicap.
Played at Mountain Brook last weekend and was +2 thru 13, then finished +8. On the 15th hole I hit a perfect 9-iron from 155 and it hits the pin the fly and bounced into a bunker. Couldn't recover mentally from there

Golf courses open in Calgary next week. Woot woot. It’s all brown still but there will be a tee box and greenish looking greens. Plus no fairway grass has grown. The heavy rough doesn’t exist yet.(unless you find last years fescue) The ball sits up likes it on a driving range mat.

Our mens league starts next week. They are putting plexi glass in the golf cart as a divider. Im am sure they stole that idea from somewhere but I thought it was a good idea. If not they were going to have to have two 3 man teams with 6 carts ( if no one walked).
