Just noticed the 5 month timeframe for the CC contest. I applaud this. It might be enough to tempt me back into a design contest. I was actually going to send you a PM about this to let you know, so I'm glad you found it first.

I have to say that I am very glad to see that the CC window has been widened to overlap with the Master's, as I was hoping to not have to wait too much longer to try to enter a competition. With the WCoD and Master's being back to back 3 months it felt like the "newer" designers were going to have to wait a long time to compete. So, thank you!

How do I enter the design competition? Moreover, I guess, are there any competitions I can submit a course to right now?

How do I enter the design competition? Moreover, I guess, are there any competitions I can submit a course to right now? First, start by joining the forum. Then to get in any competition here you have to register in the signup thread for each competition you want in on. You can't submit a course that you've already started or completed. Any course submitted for a competition must have been started after you have registered. Currently the CC registration is still open. I believe there's about 100 slots still available. There's a thread for each individual contest here: tgctours.proboards.com/board/109/season-6-contestsGood luck! And welcome!

I am new to TGC and have never really been involved in a thread discussion like this. As a newbie designer, I would like to enter the Rookie contest this fall. I saw the schedule for registration was September, but where can find information on how to enter? I am designing on a PS4, and don't know if I am supposed to publish the course first or how that works. Also, am I allowed to publish a course as a "beta" for people to comment on, and then create a completely new course for the competition? I designed and published one course, but don't know how to even get any feedback on it. It was more of a learning tool. Now I am working on one that I intend to use for the competition. Again, I am completely new to all this, so I apologize if I am asking questions that are already published somewhere. Thanks in advance for any information you can share...
I just saw the comment above that the course must be started after registration. So that means registration starts September 1, and we get essentially one month to create the course?

According to the current schedule it looks like you have 2 months. Register Sept. 1, Submit Oct. 31. Although that may have been an oversight? Typically competitions are 3 months. Someone with much more knowledge of the schedule will come along and answer soon I'm sure.

Welcome to the forums! The rookie contest is a great one to enter. As Wes says, there will be more detail nearer the time, so for now, just earmark the date and check the forums. You will only be able to start the course you intend to use when the contest starts, so if you have a particularly good idea, you may wish to save that for the contest. As for what to do now, I’d suggest it would be a good time to publish your courses in the Completed Courses section of the forum for feedback. Additionally, get involved with some of the experienced designers who stream, be active in chat and just ask questions - learning from guys like crazycanuck1985 , mattf27 reebdoog , mayday91283 and vctrylnsprts helped me immensely in terms of understanding both the tools and principles of course design. There are also a number of tutorials on YouTube by crazycanuck1985 , mattf27 and myself and I’m sure 15eicheltower9 will link the thread where he’s documenting those. Watch, imitate and go from there 🙂. jwtexan - rookie last year was two and a half months. I suspect it’s being cut down slightly this year to fit in with others.

Thanks jwtexan for pointing that out. I don't think my wife would let me hog the TV enough to get a course done in a month. Three months would be better. May need to take a week of vacation during that time. :-)

I need to speak with the schedulers on this one. Last year, Registration was on Aug 1 and courses were due Oct 15.
I would like a much longer design timeframe this year, especially since the field will be more restrictive.
This has been simmering on the back burner for awhile, but it's almost time to kick things into gear.

bmckenzie69, Thanks for the quasi tag b101 tgctours.proboards.com/thread/22247/youtube-design-tutorialsThese videos are invaluable. The thread has some notable input as well. I'd recommend spending the time between now and then familiarizing yourself with the basics. Start with Crazycanuck1985's 101 videos. They're some of the most comprehensive for beginners, and ones I leaned on the most for my rookie course. His 201 videos are more situation specific but be sure to check out his bunker sculpting one. VctryLnSprts has a good one about retaining walls and waterfalls but I think the first half of that video will be the most valuable to you. When he lays down his surfaces he does a great job of explaining green transitions (the how and why). Also take note of how smooth everything is. TWHS. When you're comfortable with the tools you should watch the other videos where they build holes start to finish. Everyone has their own techniques and you pick up on little things here and there. One of the better 2 video series to watch are mattf27 and PithyDoctorG. You don't have to wrap yourself up with the architecture part so much as I believe that's a 301 kind of thing but try to replicate their bunkers. They each do a different style in their videos and it's helpful to see because they're really good at using the tools. I think what might be the most valuable part of the videos in that thread are the course critiques. ErixonStone has playthroughs of last year's rookie contest. Watch those. All of them. It'll give you something to do when your wife has the tv. You'll see what mistakes other rookie designers make consistently and can learn from other people's missteps rather than your own. reebdoog also has some good course critiques on his channel (from last year's Major comp I believe) where he plays courses from higher level designers. That'll be good for after you get your feat wet. Also, don't be afraid to reach out and ask questions. There's a lot of good people here. Edit: I forgot b101 and mayday_golf83 Mayday has a great tip for starting a plot that works better than anything the game can give you. And b101 has some great tips for sculpting, and you can really see the brushes at work, which is great. Another edit: Most of those guys are good at design, and one's extraordinarily mediocre, so definitely follow along.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I have watched some of Crazycanuck1985's videos on YouTube, so I will check out some of the other suggestions. Even he has suggested watching others for different approaches, so I appreciate some of the suggestions.
b101 - I have completed my first course, and my son has been my only source of feedback. I will see if I can figure out how to post it to the Completed Courses section for some additional feedback and tips. Not sure how to do that since I am creating on PS4, but will dig into it.
I will continue to watch the forum for additional information on the registration, rules, etc.
Thanks again everyone!

Just hit publish when you are ready then create a thread in the Completed Courses section - if you can't grab photos (you can do via PS4 share and either copy to USB stick or upload straight to a Twitter account), then karma4u is an absolute saint who will often fly around the course to grab some pics for you

How do I share them? 1) Upload them to a 3rd party site. IMGUR works pretty good for me. 2) After its uploaded click on the picture and copy the url. 3) Start a thread in the completed courses section of the forum. Use your course name as the title. 3) When creating your post, click the insert image icon. 4) Copy the url into the box and click insert image. You can add multiple pics to the same post by just repeating the steps.
