Excited (and nervous) to be a part of this competition. I'll be using the desert theme and am thinking of something canyon and bunker heavy.
I haven't done live steaming before but will look into getting it setup if people are interested. Either way look forward to sharing progress and can't wait for your feedback!

Live streaming is a good way to learn. Watching others stream their designs has always been huge for me too. Good luck!

Here is a "probably shouldn't even post cause it's so early" screenshot. Haven't finished the sculpting of the land yet, the plan is to add a river that settles in the middle part of the map coming down from the mountain. Also going to add more rock patterns and cliffs along the holes, just wanted to spec out some distances here:

Looking good so far bud. Does "Mescalero" mean anything or does it just sounds cool?

Looking good so far bud. Does "Mescalero" mean anything or does it just sounds cool? Thanks Callum! Lots of work to be done still. Mescalero is an American Indian tribe located around the New Mexico era. Figured that name would fit the theme/look I'm going for.

Gotten all of the holes laid down now although not a single one of them is done in terms of sculpting and bunker work. River is about 75% done. This part I enjoy, I like building out holes and playtesting. The next phase is where I generally start to lose steam: when you gotta start doing all the planting and building work. Maybe one day when I get better at it I'll like that part. No pictures of individual holes yet but here's the track. Tons to do still with some elevation work but pretty happy with the progress so far.

For a veteran designer this is probably no shock, but I'm really struggling with the steppe theme. Feeling a bit handicapped with the planting portion and being able to use trees to influence sight lines.
Debating switching to another theme but hopefully can retain some of the work I've already done. Thankful for long contest timelines right now!

Interesting to see how much it changes when you change theme, in perfect world there would be more planting options within each theme. Presume you’ve tried resizing trees and lowering trees into the ground

Yeah, steppe is a pain for that... You can always just switch theme and just exit without saving if you don’t like the look. You will lose some plants for sure, but delta (random theme choice) may give you a look you really like, for example.
If you do stick with Steppe, check out some courses in that theme for a few ideas: Burrowing Owl, Fabled Haven, Cypress Dunes, Majesty Island, Maka Sichu (last year's rookie comp, so a good place to look). I think you'll need to use water, rocks and the heavy rough texture quite a bit to stop it looking so empty, but I haven't worked in Steppe so not sure.

Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself here. This contest is the perfect one to push your comfort zone and try something new as you can get feedback throughout, something you can’t normally do.
When I started designing last year I told myself I would do one course in each theme before repeating any themes for that exact reason. Some would be harder than others but it will force me to learn the tools and techniques. 😉

Thanks for the feedback all! I spent many hours over the weekend doing minor redesigns using a different theme (one I have not yet created a course for). In the end I'm MUCH happier with the way it looks now.
Timeline wise I want to spend half my time on the course sculpting/playability and the other half on planting and aesthetics. I felt it would be hard to keep that 50/50 balance with steppe.
Will post up some new screenshots later this week of the changes.

I’d go 75/25 with playability and sculpting and polishing taking the lions share, looks are nice but it has to play well!
