Was a blast competing in this last year! If you're on the fence, this is the right time to jump in head first. I was glad I did last year.

Congrats to the Rookie class of 2019 and good luck to all of you! I will be watching this closely with great anticipation!
I highly recommend streaming your design building if you can. Designers will hop in and help you out all the time and offer advice. Take it, leave it or do what you’d like but this is the ONLY contest you can and will get help on building your course so I strongly encourage you to do so!
Check out the designers who stream and jump in to ask questions, this is an awesome community and the next 2 months are an opportunity you want to take advantage of!

Additionally, if you're still new to the designer and haven't taken a look at Andre's design tutorials, I'd highly recommend them.

^ mattf27 's The Joy of Planting on YouTube/Twitch is also great. He's just too modest/ashamed of three hour long grass-planting streams to mention. I may stream some of mine a little further down the line, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I'd consider those sort of a "201" level series, as I assume that you're familiar with the tools in those videos. Andre's are definitely better for total newbies. That being said, I've been playing around with a fun little side project that I might do a couple videos on, as it fits a little more basic tutorial series.

Hope everyone is having a good time in the first week of the contest... First "rookie" error made, happy to share for those that may make the same mistake DONT cover the whole plot in heavy rough to remove the inconsistent texture colors - when you go and lay down a spline with secondary surface the edges go to a wavy mess. Would the experienced designers confirm im not going crazy and this indeed is a thing to avoid.

Yes, don’t do that. 😉
In the sculpt menu, at the bottom, you have brushes that clear generated objects. That’s what you want to use instead of heavy rough.

You will get wavy fairway edges anytime you overlay the heavy rough on the fairway. Th way to do it without getting wavy edges is to take a brush and trace the edges of the fairway with a tiny gap between your brush and the fairway. If you get too close you get wavy lines and if you get too far you’ll have a small gap.
This is a real pain and most vets will tell you the same.
