Bad first round again - I had a practice round of +3 earlier so my confidence was on top. Started well - but suddenly I hit all kind of bad shots. The best example is the 13th where I pitch the shot short in the bunker, and ofcourse I was going to hit the wall on that bunker shot. And a bad hook on the 15th tee shot was doomed for disaster. Oh well, I know I can score okay on this course.

I agree, Art, but with one minor caveat: The loft box is currently the only way to simulate moving the ball forward or back in your stance, or simulate taking more or less sand when you hit out of the bunker. Draws and fades can be done with practice, but hitting a shot high or low by moving the ball in your stance can only be approximated with the loft box, as far as I know. You can change the overall distance with partial swings, but you can't change the trajectory without the loft box. So far, I haven't really missed that ability except for maybe 2 or 3 shots in hundreds of rounds. It's kind of a non-issue at this point, which is why I said it was a minor caveat. Playing the ball forward in the stance can produce a higher shot but most pro's would hit a harder 6 iron or choke down or hit an softer 5 iron for example. The main problem is dialing in loft like you would the trajectory of a catapult. It is so unrealistic and pure video gamey. John Rahm was in between clubs on a par 3 at Wentworth in the final round last week, he went with the hit a harder shorter iron and found himself in the front bunker. Distance control is very hard in real life golf when you're inbetween clubs. As Colly said LB is the main reason for the much lower scores on TST. But I think it also brings front pins and tucked away pins more into play with longer shots. On USE we have to try a manipulate the shot(swing easier 90% or 95% which is risky) or hit a full shot and take the longer putt or swing faster for the draw. Out of bunkers you can hit a close to traditional splash shot with a flop or a chunk and run with a pitch shot. I wont get into chipping out of bunkers because the game is seriously broken there. That's why my idea has always been loft/default/de-loft. three set positions, none of this tweaking. That's (more) realistic and would still require partial/slow/fast swings, or just accepting you won't go super close.

Round 1 was chugging along at -2, then 15..........Hello Frosty!
Staggered home, signed off on +3. Gotta agree tho, feels like HTGL as far as what I've seen on TV.
Onward.

Hey Wade,
If you're gonna shoot like you did in R2 at HTGL *after* we start our rivalry, everyone's gonna think you've been sandbagging! You wouldn't want that now, would you??
I'm only looking out for your well-being.

That's (more) realistic and would still require partial/slow/fast swings, or just accepting you won't go super close. I would say that the really only realistic way to increase loft is to open the clubface. This is only done with wedges, and the club need a bounce and sole that allows you to open the face. Even then, some lies can be really tricky - if you have a tight lie or the ball sits high up in the grass, you need to change the weight balance in your stance so you come into the ball correctly. This shot - is called the flop shot, and is already in the game, so again, no need for a loft box or loft-deloft (for de-loft, you have the punch). I am not a fan of having these different types of shots in the game - I would rather make the adjustments that you do in real life, but I realise that the average gamer who has no idea on how the pros does this would have a hard time in a game such as that. Imagine having the option to put the ball back and forth in the stance (with the added frustration that if you put it too far forward or back you are going to come into all sorts of problems - that you can open the clubface, but unless you have the right club or lie, the club will just blade the ball (have anyone seen anyone open a 3 iron?!) and that you have to adjust your aim to compensate for the open clubface that is now pointing to your right (if your a lefty the face will point left). So I guess as a golfer, you have to live with some sort of simplification for the average gamer. But the loft box is unrealistic in my eyes. The same is for slow/fast backswing - no, you swing with the same effort and only adjust backswing length. To try to ease into the ball and feel for effort is just bringing more factors in - and making it more complicated and therefore harder and more inconsistent.

First round in at Harbor Town. Really love this course, and although it can get a little difficult on some tee shots there is always an option for shorter clubs off the tee. Managed the course pretty well, and could have put up a special number. Had a tough time on the back 9 getting close enough, and made some bogeys to bring me back down to reality.
-5 to start.

I just want to know: who the heck put all the darn trees hanging over and in front of the tee boxes? Call the groundskeeper! At least trim the doggone branches, but they should all just be cut down!

A much better second round, +6 - though I will likely not forget the three put from 5 feet on the 16th. Playing alongside Rob on this round - I think I tend to do it better playing in a group, keeps you more relaxed and not stress through the round.
