Good Morning Hackers! Shenanigans Golf Architecture is proud to present to you.......... The Olympic Club - Lake Course LiDAR edition!!! This course is the second of the three course project that I am working on. The Cliffs Par 3 course is already submitted and I am currently working on the Ocean Course. This course has hosted numerous US Opens and can play very difficult with the cambered fairways and very tricky greens. I hope that you will give this course a run and as always, I appreciate any feedback that you give! The Lake Course was once called “the best in the west” by famed champion Bobby Jones. With forest-lined fairways and spectacular views of San Francisco, the Lake course is one of the premiere courses in the U.S. The Lake Course has played host to countless tournaments and championships, including five U.S. Opens.
Designed by Willie Watson and built by Sam Whiting, the Lake Course opened in 1924. After damage during winter storms in 1925/6, Sam Whiting redesigned the course and it reopened in 1927 with all 18 holes north of Humphrey Drive. Only the first four holes remained the same. In 1955, the Club had the honor of hosting its first U.S. Open. Robert Trent Jones, the USGA golf course architect, arrived prior to the US Open to prepare the Lake Course, which included lengthening it, altering par on several holes and adding a fairway bunker to #6
In 2009, Bill Love, former president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, oversaw a restoration and renovation that featured the first routing change since 1927. A new 8th hole was created in the natural amphitheater below the Clubhouse. Most recently, in 2016, the Club undertook a renovation of the Lake Course’s bunkers.
****NOTE - Make sure you are playing the one with the correct TITLE - Olympic Club - Lake (L)

Just loaded up, I'm going to have to say this right off the bat... This course NEEDS to be in the boreal theme. I'll leave my comments when I'm through. 👍

Boreal really does not have the right pines for it. Would not look better, imo. And those boreal bunkers would look really out of place. It should be a great lidar course, however. Almost impossible to get that topology without it, I reckon.

Almost impossible to get that topology without it, I reckon. We had an Olympic rcr in TGC1 and TGC2 with the boreal theme and it looked much, much better than having thick bushy oak tree's. Agreed about the bunkers, obviously. Honestly, some parts of this course was unrecognizable because of the way the oaks obscure the sight lines.

Are there really flowers around the bunkers like that?
Edit: I might've gone steppe theme for this one too. You could use dead trees for twisted trunks or palms for straight trunks and then just raise delta trees up for the branches and to cover up the palm fronds. I may have to test that out for Cypress Point.

1. As many of you know, I am not a 100% Lidar Exact person. When I design a LiDAR course, I leave the contouring of greens, fairways, and land alone. I sculpt bunkers, add my own flare and try to make the course as playable as possible. If this detracts from the enjoyment in anyway, then my apologies.
2. I tried the Boreal theme and absolutely hated it. Nothing came in the way that I wanted and this was the best theme in my opinion.
3. Petty, no the bunkers do not, but as with all of my LiDAR courses, I have added my own planting just to fill in areas and give it some pop. I always say that my LiDAR projects are going to be not 100 percent from the course.

Just with it being a well known rcr people are going to expect a very faithful rendition.

Nothing is going to be 100% exact, especially in this setting, but if you're going into the project with the intention of not trying to match the look and feel as best you can, I feel like it should be named something different than the actual course name. That's just my opinion though.

I applaud anyone who wants to take it and run with it, but the themes in this game do not allow for an exact rendition. My Durango Hills course is as close as I could get to a real course. I appreciate the suggestions and your criticism

I respectfully disagree with your Petty. If you do not like it, you are more than welcome to not play it.

I mean that's fine, ultimately it's a game and you can play it however you want, but if I took Augusta LIDAR and put it on a coastline and just said well my LIDAR's aren't meant to be accurate, but I called it Augusta National anyways, is that really the direction we want to go down with LIDAR? Y'all got all your 3 Off the Tee topics for this week set in stone already?

LoL Brian, that would be a great one. I totally get where you are coming from. The sister course I am almost complete with will just be the course. It will be a good comparison
