Thought I would kick off this section of the boards. For those who aren't familiar with OpenStreetMaps (OSM), in my worst job of describing it, it's like an open-sourced google maps, where users can enter their own map details. When it comes to golf courses, there are a preset number of labels for greens, fairways, bunkers, cartpaths, etc, and you can even mark hole waypoints along with hole numbers and pars. Chad has rigged the Lidar tool to be able to pull in these labeled areas from OSM, and turn them directly into splines within the course editor.
For anyone who has ever undertaken an RCR, the process of measuring and laying out splines to get accurate hole placement and lengths is by far the most time-consuming process. The OSM import tool shaves hours and hours and hours off of the RCR process. Even if a course doesn't have good enough lidar data to use, the OSM data can be imported on to a flat plot, which still saves eons of time for courses that need to be manually elevated.
This is great for PC users who want to use the tool to create an RCR, but this can also be a way for the non-PC community to get involved. Anyone who registers at the OSM site can add these labels to golf holes, so non-PC users can contribute to this labeling process to speed up the appearance of desired RCR's in the game. For example, it is known that accurate lidar data is available for 3 of the 4 courses at Bandon (sorry Old MacDonald), but none of the holes are mapped in OSM yet. In my experience, adding accurate and careful labels for those 3 courses would probably take 1-3 hours, depending on how locked in you are. I usually chip away at courses when I'm at work, so it takes me a little longer with divided attention.
If you are interested in contributing, I recommend checking out Chad's Q and A session video, and fast forwarding to the 1 hr 33 min mark for the start of the OSM demonstration:
If you end up adding OSM info and would love for a member of the PC community to take a swing at producing that course, I recommend putting it in the request thread here: tgctours.proboards.com/thread/18188/openstreetmap-requests
I will add one tip to look out for in the next post, but feel free to use this thread to post any questions that you may have regarding the OSM process.
