For the second straight season I've known 20-30 games before the playoffs start that the Bruins would face the Leafs in round 1 and Tampa in round 2. I understand pushing division rivalries and all but it's made for a boring end of the season in back-to-back years. When it was the whole conference it meant far more games mattered in determining who faced who and you got some far more unusual matchups when the playoffs started. Plus the reseeding for round 2 once again meant outcomes could drastically chance based on the results of any single series.

Pretty crazy that the same day Calgary becomes the second team to clinch a playoff spot, Tampa Bay clinches the President Trophy.

Of course the second crazy part of that is while Tampa is an obvious Cup favourite, I don't think anyone will be picking Calgary as a favourite or even top 3 to come out of the West.

I love what Calgary has done this year. They've been on the bubble for quite some time now. The question will be if the goaltenders can step up once the games get tighter. I'm not too sure. Do you gamble on Rittich or Smith because imo. They are both huge gambles. |

Good on Bill Peters for having better luck than he had in Carolina where poor goaltending sabotaged otherwise pretty good teams. Gaudreau and Tkachuk are really good. Canadian media will be on Calgary, but consensus is still that Winnepeg and Nashville are the class of the West. |

What a surprise. Boston vs. Toronto is official for the 1st round for the second straight season. San Jose and Vegas are also already locked up for a 1st round rematch after meeting in round 2 last season. The Isles and Penguins aren't official yet but might as well be. I guess there'll at least be some solid, albeit familiar matchups early on.

To be honest. I don't really believe this to happen, but I've been horrible at these the last few years so it's probably more accurate than my actual predictions. It's the playoffs. Anything can happen. Go Leafs!

For as much as this playoff format sucks it does tend to make for a more competitive 1st round where predicting the outcomes is a challenge. Any of the 2 v. 3 series could easily go either way and it wouldn't be a total shock if one or two wild card teams won a round. It doesn't help that we saw high end teams like Winnipeg, Nashville, San Jose, and Toronto all limp into the playoffs.
I'm still debating making predictions but usually avoid it since my Bruins bias is too great.

Obviously hoping my Preds can make a run this year. They've started looking like a contender again within the last two weeks, so I think they have a good chance to advance to round 2. The Stars are a good team, so I'm not about to count them out, especially if Bishop (or Khudobin -- he was stellar against Nashville in the regular season) can steal a game or two.

Pulling for you D.O. As much as i hate the preds it's definitely alot of fun when jets preds play.
Dont have tickets for tonight's game, but no way i couldn't buy for a 830pm local friday night start. Can't wait.
