While I appreciate a good par 4... can we in general agree to try and avoid using excessive length as a difficulty tool?

Speaking of longest par 4 in US Open history the 4th hole on my WIP weighs in at 559 at the moment and has plenty of room to add on more
Damn you Jives - I'd just changed a par 5 into a par 4 for that record.......at 555 yards....
That tee is therefore being extended right now..... a cross ditch will be added at 300 yards to make you lay up, and the green raised up 30ft from the fairway - mine WILL be hardest............(insert evil laugh)

I was thinking more of a steep slope short with fairway rolling it 30 yards back down into a lake, so anything that doesn't make the 260+ uphill carry ends up wet (after an agonisingly slow 30 second roll back) ?

An example of how NOT to make a hole difficult.

While I appreciate a good par 4... can we in general agree to try and avoid using excessive length as a difficulty tool? Mine isn’t even that hard, from the current tips it’s 90 ft downhill and plays to a green that doesn’t have much hazards other than a slight runoff behind the green and cliffs/water on the right which doesn’t come into play unless you hit a shot that flies right of the green. Not to mention the green feeds that way. But it is certainly true that, in most cases, the easiest way to make a hole tougher is to add distance. (p.s. I have one that hits 580 on a separate WIP, that one’s something like 130 downhill)

Elevation can play a big part also. On my Swiss course, there was a 400 yard par 4 that was nearly driveable and the signature hole was a 540 par 4 that still left the player with an iron in. I think it really depends on the situation. Like, my course is based on Scioto Country Club, so I’m not gonna have a mountain in every corner. But then there are places like Chambers Bay, where (even though I’m not a huge fan of the course) massive elevation changes allow for many 500+ yard par 4s that are still completely playable*
*not the 18th. That hole should never have been a par 4

And I should be clear.. I'm not talking about those types of courses... just ones where you need to go driver and still have 230+ into the hole after factoring in the wind and elevation

I'll look forward to the low judging scores on my course. ;-)

FINALLY found a direction. It'll be a pain in the butt to do cause it way easier for me to be all "natural" n stuff... but this should work. Time will be the enemy. stoopid time...
