** ATTENTION DESIGNERS: REGISTRATION IS CLOSED. THANKS EVERYONE FOR THE OVERWHELMING RESPONSE TO THIS CONTEST! **
Calling all course architects! TGCTours is searching for a yet-to-be built course worthy of hosting one of virtual golf’s biggest and toughest events.
If you think you have what it takes to simultaneously mesmerize and mystify the game’s best players, then put your designing skills to the sets in the 2019 TGCT Major Championship Design Challenge!
You have from the time you register until April 15, 2019 to construct, from scratch a major-championship caliber venue. Should your design reign supreme, it will play host to the 2019 TGCT U.S. Open, held June 9-15.
The best course will be challenging, but not overly tricked up; will be visually stimulating and have the feel of a major championship venue.
Act fast! There are only a limited number of spots available and they are sure to fill up fast.
THE SPECIFICS
Objective: To create a course that tests the game's best players, while still being a fair test of golf, in a visually stimulating environment fitting of one of golf's four biggest events.
Registration (read carefully): There will be 24 contestants and up to 8 alternates. Registration will take place in two phases, with the initial phase giving preference to designers with previous experience in design contests and having their courses played on the tours. The process will be as follows
- Initial registration (Feb 1-3): The field will be filled by those who sign up Feb. 1-3 based on the following criteria.
- Experienced designers will be given preference in registration. Experienced designers are defined as by meeting the following criteria: A) Having at least four (4) course uses in TGCT Tour competition prior to Feb. 1, 2019 or B) Particpants in any of the four following design competitions -- 2018 Designer Challenge Series National Treasure Contest, 2018 TGC Tours Survivor Contest, 2018 Rookie Design Compitition or 2018-19 TGC Tours World Cup of Design.
- Those wishing to take part who do not meet the above criteria may still register to have their name put on a waiting list for alternates in the competition.
- The first twenty-four (24) experienced designers to register prior to Feb. 3 will be guaranteed entry into the field. If more than 24 experienced designers sign up, the first 24 to register will be qualified. The remaining registrants will be considered as alternates.
- If fewer than 24 experienced designers register prior to Feb. 3, the field will be filled by those who do not meet the experienced designer criteria, based on when they registered during the initial registration period, on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Alternates: The first four non-experienced designers who sign up will be guaranteed spots as alternates in the field. These designers are asked to build a course as if they were in the competition. If someone who is qualified for the field of 20 should not publish a course prior to the registration deadline stipulated below, his place will be filled from the alternate list. The first alternate to sign up will be the first alternate in the field, and so on.
Alternates in waiting: If a designer entered in the contest decides by Feb. 15 that he or she will not be able to compete, his or her spot will be taken by the first eligible alternate in waiting.
If by Feb. 4 we do not have a full field of 20 contestants, 4 alternates and 4 alternates in waiting, the remainder of these spots will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, regardless of previous design experience.
Rules: Designers may begin their course as soon as they register. No previous WIPs, no RCRs, no betas and no collabs, no streaming of WIPs. Teaser/WIP threads contained to Major Challenge subforum.
Publish window: Opens 12:01 a.m. ET Monday, April 1. Closes 11:59 p.m. ET Monday, April 15. Courses may be announced in the general completed courses forum once published and designers must include the following settings for each pinset: Wind speed, wind direction, green speed, green firmness and terrain firmness (time of day/weather settings are optional).
Scoring: Will follow the TGC scoring criteria, with extra emphasis placed on criteria that distinguishes a course as a suitable major championship venue. These items include
- Appropriate difficulty: In other words, a strong test of golf without being overly tricked up … You don't necessarily have to protect par, but we don't want to be playing Little Brook Manor, either.
- Tournament set-up: Designers will be responsible for setting the playing conditions for all four rounds including pin positions, wind strength/direction, green speed/firmness and terrain firmness. Emphasis will be given to courses that have a varied, yet consistently challenging setup. In other words, four rounds of very high winds, very fast, very firm conditions isn't going to cut it. The conditions need to be tailored to the course to enhance the challenging while keeping the course fair and playable.
- Tournament dress – Crowds, grandstands and other tournament objects where appropriate, so long as these objects do not overly affect playability (i.e. lag).
Judging: Courses will judged by a panel of veteran designers, players, schedulers and rangers.
Results: Announcements are tentatively scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 14 and culminate with the champion announced on a live twitch stream Sunday, May 19.
Grand Prize: The winning course will serve as the venue for TGCT's U.S. Open held June 9-15. Courses finishing second through fifth will be given preferential treatment to host other high-end PGA Tour events during the season, including World Golf Championship events and/or FedEx Cup events. All other entries will be given special consideration for tour events, as warranted.
Do you have what it takes to build a venue that challenges the game’s best? Ladies and gentlemen, start your bulldozers and may the best architect win!
