Work has started on Quirk Park.
This is going to be an 18 hole course with every hole having some kind of quirk to it. It will have at least three different tees, probably four and perhaps even five so golfers of all abilities can enjoy it. The course is going to be long from the back tees, in the region of 7,600 yards though the front tees will be far shorter than this.
I have designed the very basic layout of all 18 holes, ie the routing of the holes. As I complete each hole I shall post them on here and then when I have done all 18 then I shall give the whole course a check over and play test before release.
Note that the distances I post here for each hole are for the back tees only. I am designing the course initially with only the back tees and when I have designed them all I shall add in the other tees then.

HOLE 1 START 566 yards Par 5 In terms of layout, the first is in itself not too quirky though it does feature quite a lot of water, something that featured aplenty on the property when work stared. The main quirk with the first hole is that it is the first of three par 5s to start the round and is likely to be the easiest of the three despite the threat of the aqua which should be negotiated comfortably with a little thought.

Love the concept. I was thinking of doing something similar. A crazy course with quirk galore. Well see if I ever get around to it....look forward to seeing what you come up with!

HOLE 2 BUSH 580 yards Par 5 The second is another par 5 that features water. This time it is more in play with the water close to the right of the fairway in range off the tee and a good carry needed to get over the water short of the green. The left of the fairway at driving range sees some heavy rough and a couple of bunkers - one of which is looking to catch anybody brave or long enough to try and cut the corner. Oh, and there is a bush in the middle of the green.

HOLE 3 MOGULS 563 yards Par 5 The final of the three par 5s to start the round. While most of the water has now gone, there is still some a little way off the left hand side of the fairway. Bumps and lots of them feature on this hole. The first set are in the landing zone from the tee. They will definitely throw your ball off from where it should go, but which direction and how much depends how they hit them. There is the option to lay up short of them but doing so will mean you have no chance of making the green in two. The second set of bumps (inspired by mogul fields on ski runs) are short of the green, just before the fairway narrows on the green approach. If you're straight with your tee shot, it doesn't matter how you hit a bump, you'll stay on the fairway. If you're offline, you may get lucky or you may not.

Thanks Culallen. HOLE 4 SHAPES 476 yards Par 4 Our first hole that isn't a par 5 and the theme here is shapes. It sees a square tee, two rectangular fairways (one of which is obtuse), circular fairway bunkers, triangular greenside bunkers and a diamond(ish) green. Simple. Or is it?

HOLE 5 SUITS 452 yards Par 4 Another shape themed hole, this time after the four card suits. The hole features a heart shaped green and club, diamond and spade shaped bunkers along with a green that needs to be carried to hit as there is no fairway to run it on. The club and the spade were very difficult to get close to accurate. I'm satisfied with these two bunkers, though not happy. I may do further tweaking to them before publishing if I can improve on them.

HOLE 6 TRIPLE 490 yards Par 4 The first time that golfers play into Quirk Park's (unique?) triple green. The sixth is a long par four and is another hole that features a carry over water to the green. Good position off the tee is essential if you're going to make it. Note - the triple green has so far only been designed for the 6th hole and the basic shape for the other holes. Further bunkering for the later holes and possible reshaping for those will be done in due course.

Only a triple green? Meh, you're just not trying Simon, compared with my many 4-hole greens at Muirfield Manor.....

OK, so it's not unique then. It is still quirky. It's hardly the norm.

HOLE 7 MATHS 483 yards Par 4 Or if you live in America, Math. Nothing too complicated about the tee shot though missing the fairway left will probably add to your score and missing right equals trouble. The second shot is where it really requires thought. The divide bunker will stop people from running the ball onto the green, the multiply green will throw up some interesting pin positions while the water to the right will gobble up and pushed or sliced balls. If Ed Sheeran played golf, this would be his favourite hole.

HOLE 8 WALL 186 yards Par 3 Quirk Park's first par three features a fairly sizeable green guarded by only a couple of bunkers. The quirk and the biggest obstacle is the brick wall only a couple of yards short of the green. This must be carried to have any realistic chance of a 2.

HOLE 9 MONSTER 1,193 yards Par 7 This truly is a beast of a hole. It is going to take four full shots and a full wedge to get on in regulation from the back tees. That is if you clear the water with your third shot. If you have to lay up, you will be looking at a long fifth shot. And you'll need to keep your ball in the fairway so you don't lose any yardage. Not that the fairway is any wider than on a normal hole. A par 7 is going to be a really good score. Birdie 6 and you'll be moving ahead of your rivals.

HOLE 10 DIP 466 yards Par 4 The start of the back nine is fairly unremarkable at first glance... gentle rolling terrain, the odd bunker, a bit of water. It's at the sizeable green where the hole stands out as it features a large dip in the middle of it. Being in the wrong area of the green to where the hole is will leave a very difficult putt.
