The intercept above is in “simplified Cyrillic” — a little imagination, and it’s pretty easy to read.

Just as a side note...I was a Russian linguist for 20+ years in the military.

The Club at Chelyabinsk (Клуб в Челябинске) is being dedicated as the National Treasure of Russia on May 1, 2018 in a ceremony lead by Christov Saundersky, and all in attendance that day will receive a voucher for one free greens fee, including a vodka at the turn, redeemable until October of '18, when the club shuts down again for the season. On average the town of Chelyabinsk is still receiving snow for about 10 days in March and another 5 days in April, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the course blanketed in a shimmering white powder on the day of the grand opening (not the same kind of white powder that covers the national treasure of Peru). It's hard to say how many preview pictures of the course will be revealed before the main event, because Nesbit Golf Management has hired Robatoslav Scottenko as the marketing manager for the design, and he is as tight-lipped as a Moscow operative trying to influence an election, but rest assured that superintendent Terryvan Graysonirov will be hard at work in the months ahead to beautify the hilly terrain just East of the Miass River. All future communications will be handled through our publicist, Larrenko Malovsky, to ensure proper translations in all written material disseminated to the public. Not that this effects the judging in the slightest, but most of the patronyms would end in "ov" or "ova". The "sky" is a very bastardized American way of understanding Russian. So "Saundersky" would likely be "Saundersov" (son of Saunders)...not that you would EVER find Saunders as a patronymic in Russia. Petrov would be much more common (son of Peter). So...in reality you would see my last name is Christov (son of Chris) more than anything to do with Saunders. You actually had my patronym as my first name. Just having fun...nothing more.

Ugh, hate where my course is headed. It’s early enough I may start over. I really want to do well, and I’m trying to do something very different than my norm, so better to restart and be happy with it than to force this first one to work.

Still trying to decide what direction I might go for the course, but my research is telling me that despite how large Russia is, most courses are centered somewhere near Moscow. Maybe a beautiful golf course in the foreground with a hint of communism in the background is the way to go? And I thought I had a theme picked out, but now I'm totally second guessing myself. If you look at courses in and around this area, they aren't just snow-covered hills with fur hat-wearing golfers. Courses like Skolkovo, Tseleevo, and Zavidovo are gorgeous, and would look just as suitable in many other parts of the world as far as terrain and design. I think I'm going to mold a few things together, and most of all, I'm going to design in new ways to expand my portfolio.

I doubt much golf is played during Russian winters (which can last up to 6 months), the conditions are way too brutal, so the initially obvious winter theme that everybody would opt for isn't necessarily the way to go. Plus as you say it's an eye-wateringly vast terrain. I think for this contest, given that very few people here will have visited every single country, as long as there are enough visual clues in each entry such that someone can guess the country correctly after seeing it first time, the main remit will have been fulfilled. If the designer has tanks, bears and Lenin statues in the objects list you'll be set!

Another option, and what I think of when I think of Russia, is to go full overcast and gloomy (sorry, Russians). Could still do a later/earlier time of day, but could capture a good feel that way. That said...I haven't had the guts to do an overcast course yet, so I don't blame you if you don't, ha ha.

Both excellent thoughts @larrymalone and staypuft39. I spent another 6 hours in the designer last night trying to start a Russian course, and I created and deleted a starting terrain and first hole 3 times. So as of right now, I still have nothing. Ugh! Where's my vodka and orange juice?!

At some point, I just need to commit to something and move forward or I’ll run out of time. This is the general direction I’m headed now:

I’ve got all 18 holes routed and the surfaces laid in on 5 of them so far. Today was finally productive on this project! 👍🏻
