Bought The Long Dark this week and it is awesome!
It's still in early access but a very cool sandbox mode.
Basically you were in a plane crash and start in the middle of nowhere in the Canadian wilderness after some geomagnetic disaster that made all electronic devices stop working. It's all about survivals rom then on. Find food, make fire, gather supplies, find shelter, trap game, fish, don't get eaten by wolves, don't die of exposure/ starvation/ dehydration.
I like zombie stuff but this game doesn't have them and it's still terrifying. You hear wolves and you spin around trying to figure out where they are. Unless of course you manage to find a rare rifle and get some newfound confidence.
Lots of replayability, which I have needed since I've died 8 times and my record for survival is 6 days.
This one gets an 8/10 from me.

Liking this one! Played the first time on the medium difficulty and thought it was a little on the easy side. Tried the hard setting and got mauled within 10 minutes, lol! Think the story mode will be cool, and hopefully they can keep adding stuff like new locations. Nice game!

Did you get the rifle already? I found one in behind the Lone Cabin on Mystery Lake. I was three weeks in on my last go round and realized I wasn't on hard setting. So I restarted and I'm just over a week in to my new one. Already found the rifle, survived a wolf attack while severely tired and encumbered, and searched about half of the ML locations.

Well on my first playthrough on medium I found one in the abandoned lookout in the coastal highway section. But on my current hard one I have yet to find the rifle though. Found the trapper's homestead and stayed there for a while...managed to develop a tactic there to get meat where I'd scare a deer into the direction of a wolf, who would then kill it. Then I'd get the wolf to attack me and fight it off. Got lots of food that way. Had to leave though as there was no cloth and some of my clothes was about to fall apart.

I did the same thing but with the rifle I could shoot the wolf and get meat, hide, and guts from both. Enough to feed me for 4-5 days. And if you can somehow craft the deerskin boots, rabbit skin gloves, and wolf skin coat along with all of the other clothes, you can walk around in most weather conditions without getting cold. That's what I'm working towards.

Well I got the deerskin boots and rabbitskin mitts...was working towards the wolfskin coat but died just now after 16 days. A bit annoyed as I think it was kind of a glitch. Made it to the abandoned lookout in Coastal Highway but no rifle. Was late so decided to spend the night. Morning after there are wolves at the bottom of the stairs and even though I didn't go down they still reacted as if I was there. Went back up and decided to sleep for a few hours until they had gone. Nope, still there...AND...this time I didn't even go down any of the stairs. But they were still growling as if I was close. Slept for a whole night and same thing. I think that the area in which they react to you is two-dimensional so it doesn't matter if you are far above them, they will still act as if you are close. Decided to try and brave it with a flare but it did nothing and there were two of them so I died pretty quick. Just something to think about if you go up to that lookout (in Coastal Highway), get in, grab stuff, get out. Don't spend the night because there seems to always be wolves at the bottom of the stairs and without a rifle you're toast! =)
Need to get some putting practice in, then I'll start a new game I think.

Yup it's in early access on steam.
Like BentFiveWood said, there's only a sandbox but it's pretty cool and there's lots of playing time in it if you like the survivalist genre. There will be a story mode down the road also.
Just search for "The Long Dark"!

I've heard people talking about wolf glitches. I think it has to do with them being indoors or something. I haven't even found the lookout yet on Coastal Highway. I saw a glitch too where I came thru the Lake Trail and saw a wolf but it was stuck in one place with its legs moving. I didn't dare go near it but I went in one of the cabins and came back out and it was gone. I know what you're saying about the 2d aspect. When you light a fire in the lake cabin, if you stand in the place on the upper floor right over the lower level stove you get warmer. I think that's why when you enter the hydro dam the wolves automatically come towards you from the lower level. I don't like that place. Have you crossed over between the two locations using the ravine yet?

Well it's still in early access so I guess some bugs and glitches are to be expected. Still a fun game! The lookout is up on the mountain...think there is a trail from the little township where the gas station is. There's also another trail from the other side but can't remember where it starts. Not much there though...except it's one of the spots you can find a rifle. And yes I did cross over using the ravine. Looks scary but it's really easy if you're just careful. Went into the dam once and got mauled...I'll go in there again when they introduce a flamethrower in the game! Was going to wait a while before starting another game but what the heck...

Got another game going and this one is going fantastic! About 13 days in, have crafted all three clothing items, have a locker full of meat and about 30 kgs of wood stashed at the Trapper's Homestead. Plenty of cloth and materials, a sewing kit and tools. AND not one but TWO rifles!! Have only explored about half of Mystery Lake and none of Coastal Highway so plenty of resources left to find. Feel so good about this one, I might even consider going to the Hydro Dam and take on Fluffy!

Where did you find them.i assume one was at the trappers cabin?

Yes, the other one was behind the farthermost fishing cabin at mystery lake, propped against the wall next to a corpse... (The actual cabin on the shore, not the huts out on the ice.)
