Going to be interesting to see where the cut line is this week. I am going to play round three early this week both in the hope I make it and the fact Easter holidays start today and game time will be curtailed a little the next three weeks. As in the previous two rounds, a birdie start for that little confidence boost. Yesterday I played a great shot on the second, I tried to do the same thing today and made a mess out of it, distance and accuracy both wrong leaving no chance of birdie. After all the concentration used yesterday, I am a little bit more relaxed today, always seems to happen to me on the third round, less focused the day after a cut line round. It played a part on the third when I missed the green for the second shot in a row, safe par. It was a relief to find the green on four, my birdie putt was a heavy breaker, not to long, I played carefully to avoid going past the hole to much and was pleasantly surprised when my attempted lag putt dropped for birdie, it was the sort of putt I miss ninety percent of the time, so a birdie bonus there. I tried to be to clever with the use of draw on the fifth and hit a tree, there was no need for it as making the fairway was not a issue. Again, I think it's third round syndrome, cut pressure gone, riskier shots allowed, in the end, just a par. I could not decide what club to use, what shot to play on my approach on six. There was to many options, in the end, I picked the wrong one and was just a little bit to long. I think I have used up my good birdie putt quota for the day, par made. I did not need to put on seven when I chipped in for birdie, I have been missing a lot of chips lately, suffering a mini chipping crisis so that was good to see. As usual I went for the green in one on eight, as usual I missed the green. My flop shot was not great but did leave a make able put to go four under. It had been a steady if unspectacular round so far so it was a shame I threw that away with a double bogey on nine. Instead of finding the middle of the green, I had to try the spectacular that was missing from my game so far. I ended up plugged deep in the bunker, again tried to be to clever instead of safe, and my bunker shot did not go very far, after I finally found the green, poor putting and a deserved double.
I very nearly pulled both those shots back on ten, I had a nineteen foot eagle putt and I went for it, I knew I had to hit it hard because of a slope, I just hit it a little to hard, the line was perfect but it hit the cup with two much speed and hopped over the hole. I think though, it was my first birdie on ten over the three rounds so that was a positive. I did get the shot back on eleven with a fantastically judged putt. I was disappointed my approach went thirty feet past the hole as I thought I got it right. The putt was perfect though, speed and line spot on to hit the centre of the cup. I nearly did it again on twelve, this time stopping just inches short, still, happy I got the line right for a long putt, another positive. A negative though was my approach on thirteen, I could not have gotten it more wrong, way left, way short to end plugged in a bunker. This time my bunker shot was good, giving me a great chance at par but I missed a simple enough putt, like my earlier dropped shots, deserved for poor play. Fourteen was a straightforward par, then came fifteen. I had not gone for the green in two yet this week and was not leaving that chance go today. I delofted a three wood and swung, I wanted to hit a little patch of rough to slow the ball down but that was not to be, off the green it went. I was thrilled when I saw the chip I had, a dead straight ten yard chip. I was not going to miss that and I did not. The eagle brought confidence which brought birdie on the next hole with a approach that left a easy six foot putt. I forced myself to slow down on seventeen, it's not a easy hole and anything risky could prove costly, I played for par and got the par. The wind took all the risk away on the last, it is what I needed to be honest, I just needed to hit the ball straight and it would be birdie and that's what happened to finish seven under.
I might have been a bit to causal at times during that round but I wanted a more relaxed day today. Yes it cost me three shots but it also allowed me to enjoy the course that bit more. Not sure seven under a fair reflection on my round but I'll take it. Not sure when I will get round four in and more than likely there will not be a round report. Ohh there something going on, all that cheering, look balloons floating above the club house, the web.com male voice choir are singing Hallelujah. Someone must have done something amazing, pity I can't stick around to see. Oh well, have fun all.
