What I have noticed from the better players is they miss on purpose on some longer holes that are cut close to the edges, then they chip in 90% of the time. I just don't have the control to do that and hit it where it needs to be hit.

Yeah there is no chance of thinning or hitting your chip fat. Maybe the range should vary more (40-80%) from the heavy rough for chip shot or thin the cone drastically for chipping out of it. Yeah this would be way better it is just not penal enough to be in the rough around the green in the game. I noticed this week in the web tournament that a missed fairway landed you in the thick stuff and it was very hard to advance the ball more than 100 yards at times as the lie was so poor, they need to do something similar in the thick rough around the green and really penalise you or force you to flop which is at least realistic. Think you pair are on to a winner there lads. If you are on the fringe fair enough but need to have a bigger varient in the light & heavy rough!
