I think people are being a bit harsh saying it's not a real links course. It doesn't quite play exactly like one, but to be fair, a real links setup would probably be quite easy on this game. Fairway have to be tightened and landing spots need to be smaller to make it a challenge at all. Some areas are definitely lacking in terms of links feel, but it has a very nice look that could certainly be thought of as links style, and I think it's a beautiful looking track. I don't know what option would've been better at this point. I enjoy playing it a lot. As for St. Andrews, none of them are even close to being worthy of holding a TGCT tournament, and I've played a few of them. The designer didn't even come close to putting in enough time to make a recreation on this game. It would've been a real shame if we played one of those. Our standards are too high after what we've gotten from CLV and Craig. I agree. Whilst it may not be a "true" links, it's about as close as you'll get in the Countryside theme and is a very good hybrid of being a sort of links course (humps and bumps in fairways & greens) and a tough enough challenge. Personally enjoying it. For a "Plan C" it's a stunning course

Yes there is a St. Andrews course but there is just one that has four pins...and when I play tested it, I was -13 after 12 holes. Not exactly a tough test, so we passed.
University Links was not created with the British Open in mind and I understand that there are those that are disappointed to not have a true British style links course. But there have been many in the community that have heralded the course as a masterpiece and we collectively as an admin team think it a major worthy course. Patrick put a ton of time last minute in getting it ready for us and I think it is advisable for all to choose your words carefully when speaking of his course. It's an exceptional course and his efforts need not be scrutinized unfairly by those who just wish to vent their disappointment that it's not a British style course.

I havent seen one bad comment on university links or the effort put in by the designer or tgc. My comment was more advisory than accusatory. That said, there have been a few comments in the shoutbox. I'm just asking everyone to use their better judgement.

I don't really follow this forum too closely and I'm sorry if this has been answered elsewhere. I thought I qualified for The Open, but cannot see a way to register.

University Links designer here! I must say I expected a far worse response... For what it is worth I am in fact British \o/... and I know a good British links course having played several IRL (shot +1 gross on Princes which once hosted the British Open)... And... This isn't one, I am proud of it as a US links course and I feel for the community not getting a British links for this event. As far as the setup goes, I'd have loved to spend a weekend getting those pins spot on, as it was I stayed up late doing best I could in the time falling back on some great players to play test and filter out my crazy. Day 1 is possibly too tough for me but you should be able to get make able putts on most if you don't go at the pins... and some very good players assured me it does play fair Don't want to put a stop to the criticism, my initial US Open Contest offering needed work and my University Links course was a product of hard work and that feedback... So keep it coming it will only make me a better designer. Thanks all (especially the awesome TGCT guys) and enjoy the competition

You cant say that! But yea i am actually. Ironically the hole i didnt care so much for was 17, from the tee anyway. The greens and surrounds are great. 9 10 are a bit bland maybe but i love it. A lot of the iconic players didnt care for it at first but ended up studying it for their design ideas. Its definately a grower

I havent played yet but i am disappounted. There are a few really.goods links recreations out there; birkdale, troon, st andrews. Uni. Links looks great but its not links nowhere near. Any true links on the course database didnt seem to get a look in. I appreciate the american influence of the tgc and tgctours but like it or not british links have always set the standard for great course design. Like it was mentioned above, Yeltzman doesn't submit his courses here so we can't use them. Univerisity Links was designed by a Euro based player. Why? Seriously as far as I am concerned, once a course is published it is public property and anybody can do whatever they like with it.

We decided we wouldn't submit others courses for them at the outset. The way the site works, it links all courses submitted by an account and unless we changed our stance and created a dummy account for submitting courses I don't see any other way to get those courses here. Unless someone convinces Yeltzman we're not an evil corporation or maybe he just doesn't know we exist

For me the course was a definite challenge. With the winds if you missed the fairway (and it was easy to do on many holes) you were struggling to save par, which is what any 'open' should be like. I applaud the decision to go with different firmness/speeds on different days as it allows duffers like myself to go for tucked pins on soft greens while attempting to stay under par on the hard firmness. Was it perfect? No, of course not, not many coursers are, but it gave everyone an opportunity (whether you are fan of firm, medium or soft greens) a chance to have a round that suited their preference.
As Doyley pointed out with the wind patch possibly looming and coming out this week, a lot of people scrambled to play when it first came out and the winds were 4-8mph. I normally wait to play my rounds, but with company coming over I was able to put in three rounds in between cleaning and my winds were between 4-12mph for all three of my rounds. Day 2 (which is the PC's firm day) was especially challenging but unlike other courses I have played with that firmness setting, there were plenty of opportunities to putt for birdie.
Overall i think it was a good plan C and the decisions made to vary the firmness was fair. Considering the circumstances on how we got to Plan C, I believe the admin did everything they could to make it fair to all.

I see Yeltzman's name in the shout box so I think he has an account. Wish he would join and have fun with us as he's a super designer and a nice guy.
