Unrealistic courses that plays well and creates that "golf feeling" - not just unrealistic. Exactly right. I am not talking about "fantasy" courses. Just courses that have the same aesthetic of real world course, but with much more demanding layouts. Tighter fairways, tougher conditions, and overall less forgiving of poor shots.

I played the course last night to see what all the fuss was about and I actually found it to be very fair. Granted I flew threw it and shot 10 over but I'm also a CC-B player. Obviously it could be tweaked here and there but this designer had an idea of a tough and challenging course in mind and presented a beauty. Unfortunately it is far from what the real John deere will play like for you PGA guys but I remember playing the old TW games and shooting 20+ under every course which is why the golf club is so unique. It offers an immense amount of variety. I congratulate the designers who go out and be different!

Played my first round in 9-14 mph winds and somehow managed to shoot a 72, which I am happy with. This course was as a tough as advertised.
Was quite upset that I bogeyed #11, one of the few holes that should be a good birdie chance. Hit my drive into the front left bunker and couldn't get close to the pin from there. Oh well, hopefully tomorrow brings lighter winds and maybe a chance to shoot par.

79-73-80-78 That ought to make my round scores graph look a lot more interesting. I won't complain about the course selection because it was the same for everyone. I will say that any course for which the game plan becomes hitting the ball into the rough closest to the pin and trying for a chip in is just set up a shade poorly. The combination of pin placements and green speed/ firmness made it that way. Loved the course layout otherwise. I'll put this poor performance down to the growing pains I am having with my new controller. Too many shanked putts and tee shots to count. Geez Scott, what happened?!? You've been playing great lately too.
Looks like my even par is easily making the cut. Wasn't sure a few days ago.

Where's the cut line going to be? Right now, I counted 67 players posted scores and only 13 are under par. I'm thinking + 6.

+6 gets in easily IMO.

Played my first two rounds: 69 and 74. I can not remember a single decent putt or chip or flop I made in these two rounds. My short game was just totally off. Combined with a few misses from the tee in round 2, which all resulted in a bogey, I am not pleased at all with my score. Wind was not strong but from the totally wrong direction. I could not reach the Par 5 No.4 in two. And the putt or flop is not that easy. While I played that hole eagle numerous times in my practice rounds I ended up with birdie and par. That does not help you on this beast of a course. About the course: There is not much more to say. I love firm settings. I normally putt much better under these conditions than on slower greens. The tee shots are ok for me. You sometimes just have to play defensive. The shot into the green is where I have a real problem with this course: It just does not reward you for good shots. It is pure luck if zoo end up well or not. I do not know how many times my ball rolled past the hole, steep uphill and instead of coming back to the hole stopped on the fringe. The next shot I only had to bring the ball into motion so that it rolled past the hole. On 18 I played a marvelous shot into the green. I thought I would end up with a 8-footer. Instead, the ball kept rolling downhill and I ended up with a 50-footer 2ft uphill. I misjudged the speed and had another shot from the same distance. Instead of a birdie I ended up with a bogey. That is just frustrating and if I had better teeth my DS would have bitemarks.

There are courses where a stock shot at the pin will get you to tap in range, there are courses where you have to consider some slope on the green for an uphill putt. Then there are courses where you have to hit a certain area or spot with a stock shot to feed to the hole.
Finally there are a few select courses like Harbour Pointe where you need to hit a certain area with the right curve and loft to feed up to the hole - and on some holes 30 feet is the best you can hope for.
It really tests your complete game and dishes out brutal punishment when you are out of position - but still gives you an out if you can pull off a spectacular shot or putt to recover. Just as a championship golf course should. Hard but never unfair.

Very simply, new controller has messed with my putting. Aim and disance control are so off I was 3 and 4 putting a lot of greens. Add in plenty of holes where missing the fairway precludes making the green in regulation and bogey becomes the best I can hope for. It was a mess.

Kinda wish I would have kept fighting through this bad experience. I'm still Top 5 after an even par round in round 2. Oh well my 79, 79 to close will be a good laugh.

Just checked my round 1 stats and I only hit 60% of FIR. I'm going to need to do much better if I want to shoot under par. This course is hard enough without playing from the heavy rough.

Mental game is all part of the process if you are trying to be top-5. You were right in it after two rounds. Next time split it up and give yourself a break on some of these tougher tracks - a fresh start in R3 might have made all the difference.

It just hit me that I finished at +2 overall I think, and I played Hole #1 either +5 or +6 for the tournament. That's one tough hole. Maybe I should have learned my lesson and stopped trying to go pin hunting every time but...nope I didn't.

It's too bad can't access the scorecard feature from US Open. I'd be curious to compare that stats from Elmview and here. Obviously my cumulative score was much better at Elmview, but it still was quite tough to hit fairways and greens in certain conditions. I think the glaring difference would be # of putts, and number of bogeys, and maybe GIR. Despite my fairways hit is high here at Harbour Pointeand was at Elmview, still can be near impossible to hit the green, and sometimes hitting it is not the "right"play.
