Just played this in the XB1 Seniors society. I'm not normally a fan of these template courses but I really liked this one. The best compliment I can give is that it felt like a real course. 5-stars and a favourite.

Holy crap why would I ever want to play the course. I am running down to the bookstore and waiting for the novel to come out. Talk about writing up and intro to a course you gotta take the cake! A BIG ROFL for me and I will surely play the course. You should be in sales - Hmmmmmmmmmm Maybe you are! Looking forward to it.

I hope they got all the troops out of the area before they bombed it to put all those bunkers in there. My my I can see how they would use those bunkers for trenches.

Just going through some courses I've missed over the past month or so. Good to see the template revolution in full force ☺. I'll leave some comments after the round.

Hey Slick60, Thanks for playing the course. Joe is referring to template hole design which was popularized by architects Charles Blair McDonald and Seth Raynor in the early part of the 20th century. MacDonald wanted to bring to America many of the great hole concepts that he found in the British isles, see National Golf Links of America. Raynor followed MacDonald and produced many courses throughout the states that borrowed the same concepts. About 2/3 of the holes at Elysian Downs are riffs on these template holes ie: road hole, Biarritz, Redan, alps, short, punchbowl. These templates sort of went out of fashion at the turn of the century as championship golf became more prevalent. Recently there has been a renewed appreciation of the concepts as they introduce a lot of fun and creative shot making that was found on the great courses in the British aisles. Joe has been working on some really cool template courses of his own which are really pure representations of those holes. You should check his courses out. All in all, we’re just bunch of golf architecture nerds. Just going through some courses I've missed over the past month or so. Good to see the template revolution in full force ☺. A good take on the template design style. Enjoyed how you incorporated your own ideas into the established templates that you used. Some good memorable holes and highlights on the course.
Loved the framing bunker on the higher part of the fairway on the Alps hole. A really good Alps hole through and through.
Great bunkering on the cape hole. Well covered green and fairway.
Definitely a fan of the inverted thumbprint on the short. I'll definitely steal that idea for a future course...
Liked the idea of combining the hogs back and double plateau templates but, I wasn't keen on the tight landing area. I thought it was too harsh for a 500yd par four.
Excellent multi choice off the tee on the Long hole. Risk by going down the narrow right side, safety left. Nice big green to go with it.
Loved the original eleventh. Great sight lines and options. The whole narrow green area with the run off fairway was spot on.
Very enjoyable titled Biarritz. Room for a pin in the swale is always a bonus. Lovely surroundings too.
Very nice Eden hole. The strath bunker frames this green beautifully from the tee. Nice large green that has that trademark back to front tilt.
Your "wall" hole could easily pass for a Knoll template. One of my favorite templates, too. Love the idea of having a pushed up green on a short hole that is protected at all sides, making pitch shots difficult for people who have driven it long. Underrated style of hole.
A few things I wasn't keen on were the punchbowl hole. It didn't really play or look like an actual punchbowl green.
I felt there were too many holes with split/bottle style fairways. I didn't feel as though it suited the Road hole very well because a tee shot down the right pretty much cancels out the road bunker for all approach shots.
My biggest criticism was the bunkering. From afar the bunkering looked excellent, but once you got up close or into a bunker, the edges were very scraggy, many had camel humps running through the middle of them and almost every bunker was a bath tub with no flatness to the bottoms of them.
All in all Elysian is a rock solid course with some fresh takes on the templates. Hats off to you. One fir the favorites list.

I’ve obstinately refused to move from TGC 2 to ‘19 so far. This is the best argument yet for me to reconsider.

Really appreciate the feedback Joe! Many of the template holes are loosely based on the originals, so I wouldn’t say it’s a true template course. As with most of my courses I have an idea as a starting point and let it evolve. With the hogs back hole I was concerned that by not pinching the fairway that most players would just bomb it down the middle and take away the angles. I was hoping with the green angle that the short right pin would accept shots from the the left side of the fairway and the long left would accept shots from the right side of the fairway. I was hoping I could suck the player into unnessarily taking on a risk with the drive to the right when the Shorter drive to left is the preferred approach to the short right pin. The length of the hole is such that I wanted the low trajectory of the second shots to have to contend with the principal’s nose bunker well short of the green. I was interested in this kind of idea for the course, longer approach better angle. Less risk and reward, more strategic. I’m interested in finding ways to prevent players from always taking the shortest route to the hole. I hear what you are saying though, there might not be enough incentive to go right off the tee and so the player sees the drive as being perhaps overly penal. In retrospect it might be interesting to open up the fairway and extend the hogs back feature further so that it doesn’t propel shots forward and serves to accentuate the angles into the pins. With the road hole I was trying to incorporate a similar approach. The path on the right does negate the road hole bunker but requires a more precise drive with a limitation on distance. The left route provides a wider unimpeded path so it’s possible to bomb it further with the trade off being the bad angle into the green. The decision to go one way or the other would depend on the wind or pin position. In any case the hole is inspired by the road hole but doesn’t actually qualify as a road hole. The 18th is the hole I struggled with the most. I actually had it as a more formalized punch bowl complex but instead opted to create a partial bowl with a big hump in front. I’m not super happy with it but it does provide some interesting ground game. I struggled with the flat bunkers. I’m not sure how you do it. I basically resigned myself to having them bath tubbed. If you have any pointers, I’m all ears! In the end I treated the course as less of a Raynor course and more of a Macdonald course, a bit rougher around the edges somewhat more irregular and quirky than a Raynor course. Thanks again for playing and I really appreciate the feedback. Don’t take my long winded responses to you criticisms as being defensive. The discussion is what makes this so fun. It seems that after the patch, hole 12 is bugged. I've tried it a few times and it always places you in the rough with camera down position at the 12th tee off. Can anyone else confirm?

ahh geez, really?!?. This patch also messed my Reverand Green Course. one par 3 is now 700 yards!
Hope they can fix it rather than re-publishing.
Sounds like its a pretty systemic issue

Seems to be a bug since the last patch where this is happening from time to time.
