Too bad you didn’t stick with. If any one could pull off one of his courses you could have! I’ve started off with Banff as an inspiration but I’m sure it will evolve into some sort of hybrid. I have difficulty staying completely true to an architects style. I hope when I’m done it communicates some of Stanley Thompson’s ideas. With this project I really spent the time before hand creating the surrounding mountains and river before I even thought about the routing of the course. It’s been a blast routing the course and finding the holes out there. Probably my favourite part of the whole process. Currently I’m just working my way around the course identifying the really special moments and also resolving the awkward moments so everything flows well together. Slow going’s though. I tried this after I got back from Banff (played Banff, unfortunately didn't play Jasper even though I was in Jasper on the same trip). My plot sucked, though. I'm terrible at creating mountains. Abandoned the whole process after a short amount of time. Needless to say, this looks much better, and captures the look and feel right away from the screenshots.

Slow goings with work and kids! I have only been putting in about 2 hours a week over the last while. It will be at least another month or two before I’m finished. I’ll post some progress pictures of what I have so far soon.

I’m sooooo looking forward to this one. Banff Springs is probably in my top 3 favourite courses, so this Thompson-inspired work should be awesome! Keep us posted, Rob!

I think Wilson must have upgraded to the Platinum version of the designer...

Hey Rob.
I’ve been slowly picking away at it. The front nine is about 85%. The back is at about 50%. i reconfigured The routing last week so I’m starting from scratch on a few holes. I think it’s going to be a better layout though. Hopefully be done in a month or so. We’ll see.
I’ll post some pictures in the next few days.

Recently read the Banff article in the latest Golfer's Journal, and just realized for the first time that it used to be an out and back track, running out from the hotel and then finishing the last few holes in its shadow. I thought the transition from 13 to 14 (or 14 to 15, can't quite remember) stuck out like a sore thumb from the rest of the course. Might be too late to do it, but capturing that out and back layout would be cool for a course like this.

The out and back was always in my mind a bit but then I created the terrain and the routing called for something else. It’s tough to fit a bunch of holes as an out and back on the available plot. Perhaps if I had laid out the holes first and then sculpted the terrain I might have been able to make this work. There is a bit of linearity with the routing however as is, and the holes running parrellel to a river within a valley is the most common link to Banff. I’m finding that the course is taking on a bit of a life of its own. I’m using Stanley Thompson as an inspiration but I wouldn’t say it’s going to be a dead ringer for Banff. I’m struggling to find good images of his old bunkering, much of which seems to have been changed and simplified over the years on many of his courses. Some of his bunkering was wild and I would love to dig up some more images to give me a bit more inspiration.
