I had a curiosity question and I know it will be an average but how wide do you usually like to make your fairways? Thanks ahead of time.

Depends on the course... My newest published has a range of 18 yards to like 35 yards, so overall kinda skinny, but my new WIP also has skinny areas but get very wide, about 50 yards. I wouldn't go below 15 yards, except maybe for pinched areas when you have layup areas around it, or multiple spots to drive, and I really haven't seen a fairway that's too big. Go nuts. Or not, just make sure we can hit it.

BTW, I usually don't make many 'open' style courses so my fairways are almost always kinda skinny. So 50 yards seems wide to me, but may be the norm for you

I wouldn't worry too much about making your fairways TOO skinny in an effort to make your course more difficult. (Skinny= <15-20 IMO) The best hitters in this game have pin point accuracy, so making a slim fairway won't trip them up. Like Derpy said, a range of 20-35 with the occasional skinnier or wider is appropriate. In order to add difficulty, you have to find a way to make the golfer think about their shot, without sacrificing the general look of the hole, which can be a tough task.

skinny is less than 20 yards wide for a target landing zone from a driver 15 yards wide for a target landing zone for a wood or smaller off the tee box
typical acceptable landing zones for drivers is in the 20-30 yard range. players like variety, some tough rewarding drives mixed in with some easy drives where you must set up for the approach angle, toss some suggested wood or smaller clubs off the tee once or twice a round.
real courses are typically 25y-40y wide on average, you can find some skinnier, and you can find some much wider, those are just averages.

Thank you guys for the answers. I have always aimed to make my fairways around 30ish except for an occasional smaller landing area. Working on a new course yesterday I just started wondering what others preferred. Thanks again.

also if you want to make it tougher move the tee to the side to make the driving angle a little harder. while the fairway may be 25 yards wide, it your coming at it from an angle that 25 yard wide fairway is a little harder to hit.
